The one thing this mech brings is variety. Yes we all know it’s a missile boat. That said depending on it’s mission what it throws at it’s opponents can be devastating. Also this is a dang solid base to build custom mechs from. In this time want a cheap (well relatively so) upgrade. Change the LRMs for clan versions. Take that weight reduction and either add more armor or more missiles. Having it stay longer in the fight. If you’re an enterprising Merc with a Shite Ton of advanced salvage. This could be a monster you don’t ever want to see. As it is though this is just the deterrent the periphery needs to keep it’s neighbors both other Periphery States and any of the great houses from having adventures in your backyard.

The thing I find impressive about the hawkwolf is just how little downside it has, for a mech produced in the periphery, with good quirks, and equipment and a mission set that it can accomplish well. Usually most boot strap mechs have a horrible flaw. Even the primitive tech version of it is only 10 kph slower and has a little less ammo. If this mech came out in the 25/26's instead of the 31st century it'd have been hailed as an undeniable classic. Hell, even the tiniest bit of advanced tech it has in it, the case, is sensible, unlike most great house refits in the 3040's tossing in a ton of the fancy found-tech in to whatever they had without it always fitting the mech. Its just such a humble, grounded design, without any glaring flaws, which is kinda amazing for a backyard periphery kitbashed assault.

The Periphery is churning out Dark Age era advanced stuff. Take a look at the new Toro variants from the Calderon Protectorate from Shrapnel 10, the Penthesilea 75 ton trooper built by the Magistracy of Canopus in 3085, or the Hound by the Filtvelt Coalition. All are excellent designs using 3050 or higher tech. The Periphery isn't serving up garbage anymore. The Taurians are even using Clan Omnis like the 60 ton Lupus, and also producing Royal Marauders, Thunderbolts, Crusaders and Warhammers. The irony is delicious for both sides as the Camerons' legacy is used by their greatest foes to build their army. Who"s reunified now, Star Leauge?
@scytheseven9173 Жыл бұрын
@@stormcrow28 The new Toro variants are a bit weird-both painfully swap the ppc for a light PPC, and the earlier one has just 10 single heat sinks. The later one upgrades to double heat sinks and an Angel ECM, but keeping the light PPC and switching to a fragile XL engine is painful, even if it is faster. The MML 5s are a good choice, though, they compensate for the minimum range of the PPC and LRMs well.
@stormcrow28 Жыл бұрын
@@scytheseven9173 I think the idea was to increase the short range firepower by switching to the medium laser and MMLs once the Light PPC was in minimum range. They removed the PPC so they could get tonnage for the MML ammo, CASE and the Guardian. While I would have liked them to use Endo Steel and a Light Engine to go with an ER PPC and two MML-5s with DHS, they probably decided the Calderon Protectorate didn't have the resources for all of that in one design. I built a third model of the Toro that adds Ferro, CASE, an ER PPC and DHS as a longer range upgrade for those Toro 6s that didn't get converted to 9s and 12s.
@scytheseven9173 Жыл бұрын
@@stormcrow28 It's just that the light PPC is such a downgrade for punching holes in armor at range, which is where missiles shine. The XL engine is a bad upgrade imo, ups the cost a lot while severely hurting survivability for a marginal speed increase. 2 MML-5s and CASE and 2 tons of ammo is a 2.5 ton increase over the LRMs. The MMLs with double heat sinks, endo-steel, and ferro-fibrous while keeping the PPC would probably be the ideal upgrade imo (or maybe switching to a Snub-Nose PPC).

Hello Red The Hawkwolf is a 'good' Mech for most single planet governmental entities. If you have the ability to build them, there are more than enough buyers in the Periphery to garner a healthy profit for your organization. Several Hawkwolfs can rain enough ordnance down upon Pirate pointy heads to make them seriously reconsider their raid. They can also throw enough missiles over time to ablate even Heavy Mech armor down to where Medium and Light Mech weaponry can do real damage. All in all, the Hawkwolf isn't a flashy brawler, nor useful as anything other than a long ranged, support Assault Mech. But, that is more than enough of an Assault for most minor periphery powers out there. Backed with speedy tanks, and well emplaced Infantry, the Hawkwolf should give most of such minor Periphery generals a way to reduce attacks to 'manageable' size and force. Enough so, that that same general might actually 'win' most engagements. Not a bad thing, in an of itself, and keeps the planet from being raided so that they can engage commerce with other star nations more regularly.

For a mech that is not fielded by anything bigger than a minor Periphery state this is a pretty decent option. On paper at least, this looks like the epitome of "good enough". With the exception of the MMLs it is effectively 3rd Succession War tech and does not look shabby for its environment. Ok, it is entirely dependent on ammo, but that is the price of simplicity. Two equivalent SRM5s is something to give a light mech pilot pause. My Star mates would sneer that a Timber Wolf could reduce it to slag it in seconds, but that would be missing the point. This mech was made by a bunch of Periphery vigilantes for fire support (did the mountains of Catapult spares finally run out?!?😲). That alone is impressive.
@observationsfromthebunker96392 жыл бұрын
As someone who's done some fighting in the Periphery before, I should say that the Hawkwolf addresses a long-standing weakness of Periphery 'mech forces. They tend to have little long-range firepower, either direct or indirect fire. Entire worlds stand or fall due to the clashes of a couple lances' worth of mostly under-maintained and over-clocked light and medium 'mechs. The minor states and independent worlds now with the Hawkwolf have enough inexpensive, easy to care for missile boats that can smash the motley companies of pirates, brigands, and ambitious warlords at range, letting the home team clean up at an advantage.
@ChaosTicket2 жыл бұрын
The Hawkwolf is a fairly solid mech. Its a testament to how the Periphery has improved that a totally homegrown unit can be made by one planet. Its mix of technology is a bit odd. It can use CASE from the Star League, and MMLs from the Jihad, but no double-heat sinks? If it did have Double Heat Sinks that would help it primary problems, allowing to to carry some lasers, up the armor, and become heat balanced.

Just remember that most of these factories are automated and running since the Amaris Civil War or before. None are operating at peak efficiency I would imagine. Impressive for the Periphery, but for my own mercenary company I'd still rather an Archer, Catapult, or heck even a Trebuchet (hopefully a variant of any of those that has at least some backup energy weapons, usually medium lasers). Those mechs do mostly the same job as the Hawkwolf, but they generally cost less since the engines used are much smaller and for my experience the fusion engine is the most expensive part of the mech, even if it is just a standard fusion engine. The smaller the mech, the smaller (and cheaper) the engine needed to push it around at 64kph, so my thinking is "Why pay for an Assault mech and its large engine if your pilots know enough to not over-extend, don't have the SRM tubes to make that something even worth considering, and aren't even being put in harms way by you the commander?" Now granted, things don't always go to plan. But that's why I picked the three mechs I did (and specified that they should have some back-up energy weapons). 4 medium lasers is enough to make pretty much any light mech you're likely to see on the Periphery think long and hard about if they really think they can bite the ankles of these "undefended" fire support assets. And if you swap out one of the medium lasers for a TAG system, that's all the better. TAG can call in a lot more than just LRMs, if you remember. Artillery and Arrow-IV can also use TAG guidance. Or you know, swap out one of the 4 mechs in the fire support lance for a mech designed to fight light mechs, like a Panther (there's a lot of light mechs out there that can't take a regular old IS PPC anywhere twice without going internal, and then there's the other weapons on the Panther).

The Brotherhood of Randis who producrs this mech has access to mostly 3025 tech for their manufacturing, and they're a group of Christian knights who pilot Mechs similar to the Knights Templar, without the Crusader or political overtones. They accept and draw in many outcasts, including even Clan warriors, and also use Reunification and Amaris Civil War era Amaris designs like the Rampage along with making ,Warhammers, Hawwolves, and other stalwarts of BT past. The Hawkwolf is an excellent example of simple production and how even well supported single plant powers in the Periphery advanced during the Jihad and beyond. It's easy to make, carries plenty of armor, and has one purpose, to shoot you with missiles. The MMLs give it SRM capabilities for short range combat, and when combined with Longbows, the most common assault Mech in the Inner Sphere and Periphery, allows you to cover the sky in missiles. The regular tech version is easily the equivalent of an Archer or Longbow on a cheaper platform, and the Periphery uses them everywhere. A simple, well built Dark Age Mech that the larger powers often miss in their focus on high-tech equals effectiveness.

@@PandorasFolly Combined arms has always been key to any good unit in Battletech. The Star League knews this, which is why it had Mechs, tanks, airpower, infantry, and spacecraft all as part of various divisions. The Clan Omnimech may be the ultimate expression of Battletech ground warfare, but it's expensive, requires a significant logistics and technical train, and can be defeated with good tactics and unit selection. If you look at the forces that defeated the Clans in battle during the Invasion, they either had huge armies (Kurita and Constar), deception and quick strike tactics (Helmar Vasalek of Santander V, the Black Omen, the Fedcom units on Twycross, Kurita yet again), or combined arms focused on attrition (Comstar, Grey Death Legion) A stand up fight with 3050 era IS mechs vs Clans will probably end up in a win for the Clans unless you plan well or get lucky. But choose terrain with short sight lines, add in support troops like tanks, helicopters, infantry and artillery, and you can hammer the crap out of the tinspawn all the live long day, especially in cities. As the tech and design gap has shrunk, battles become more even but more deadly. The Periphery becomes part of that trend to, with the Taurians, the Canopians, the Fronc Reaches, the Calderon Protectorate, the Marians, and even pirates gaining access to stealth armor, Angel ECM, Omnimechs, and even Clantech. Already seeing how the O'Choda Special Forces will modify it, assuming we can't get a license to manufacture. Remove the single heat sinks and replace them with 10 double heat sinks, add 2 medium lasers to the center torso, and 2 extra tons of srm ammo.

Its not bad, it's just not good. The basically stole the lasers and a ton of armour from an Archer 2S or 2W to swap the SRMs for MMLs and add some heatsinks. And somehow made it a lot fatter. For single system Periphery state with a low tech base (for the Periphery!!!), it's a good first indigenous design. If these guys can make energy weapons and DHS, they'll be set, or buy them from the Taurians. This would have been like the Oberon Confederation turning out mechs. This isn't a participation trophy type review, this is a "you had crap and no tools, and you made something that doesn't utterly suck" review.

It’s not bad, but it’s an assault mech that is on par with most Clan Invasion era Archers

If I had the cash... and access to 3050/Invasion era tech Remove the MLMs Add more LRM reloads Go to 10 double heat sinks That gives 10 tons I would add a large laser and 3 mediums to keeps lights honest. The other 2 tons into LRM reloads. The only thing not Secession Wars tech are the heat sinks. If that was all you have access to... Again, nix the MLSs Add 2 LRM-5s, 2 MGs with 1 ton of Ammo, and 2 more Standard Heat sinks. Fixes the heat issue and adds an anti-infantry/melee range system. I would consider dropping it to 1 MG and a half ton of ammo to add another ton of LRMs, but I love My MGs...

This design really missed an opportunity to be designated the TRX-4RMS.

It's more if I see the comment or not. Sometimes I don't, or sometimes I just disagree enough that it just doesn't happen. :)

I love this mechs design it looks unbalanced like it could be easily knocked over. It's so goofy looking.

Hmm... I really question myself, what could you do to refit that mech with modern technology without rebuild half of the Mech itself? Weapon wise, there cannot be done much. Only Limited sockets for Missiles. Not even for one MG or a small laser. No Space or Sockets to put an ECM or a BAP in it. You could switch the standard Heatsinks to double, put better Armour on it or do something with the Reactor and Gyro. Maybe give the Launchers, because of the Double Heat Sinks which means it would need less of them, some Upgrades with Artemis Systems and a CASE II for the Ammo. Also maybe some Variety for the AMMO Types them self like Cluster, Mine or Inferno Ammo. But it would still be a Third Line Missile Boat, and for a 85 Ton Mech, this is a waste. You could put several Tank based LRM Carrier there for less than the cost of this mech I think and with a good tactican, they would be more effective and maybe in less danger than this mech. It may be cheaper and have 20 more tons than a Catapult, but I would still prefer to go into battle with one of them (Variant with Lasers in it), instead of that mech here. :D

This isn't a bad mech, but it really isn't a good purchase for a periphery world milita. Sure, the Hawkwolf is easy to maintain, cheap systems, cheap ammo, and the parts shouldn't be hard to replace at all. Technically, is perfectly suited to be the cheap mech in your assault lance. The thing is ... this is inferior to a tank performing the exact same role. Indirect fire, long range bombardment are both done better by a LRM carrier for way less than half the price. What a planetary militia needs from an assault mech is a brawler. Something that poses a credible threat and that can keep the heat off of other units on the same battlefield. Replace the LRMs with SRMs, heavy auto cannons, or short ranged energy weapons and this would better fit what most militia on a budget need from a mech to support their mechanized infantry. Then again, if you are a pirate or other more offense minded periphery power, the Hawkwolf might be exactly what you want in a raider. Well, other than it can't be used to haul loot back to your dropship.

80ton full on LRM Assault Mech... honestly id rather take a Catapult with 2 LRM 15 and 4 ML at an assumingly lower price, with the same capabilities and easy maintainence, and not being helpless when enemys get closer than 180m

An independent, single planet, periphery state that can build decent and cheap assault mechs? I have a hunch they wont be so independent for very long. 😕
