Just a note. The clutch has what’s called a clutch brake. (2 things in one pedal) You use it to get your first gear from a stop. This is a small brake that stops the spinning gears. After you get the truck moving, you only use the clutch half way. You don’t need the clutch brake. You got this!

"You're floating!" That cracked me up. It was so much fun watching Becca go through kindergarten after she'd had time as a seasoned driver. And it definitely brought back memories. In my situation, I never got comfortable or proficient with shifting the 10-speed Eaton Fuller until I got off my trainer's truck, went solo and went to exclusively floating the gears. Made all the difference in the world. On my trainer's truck being required to double-clutch I would stall out on the climb up the Grapevine out of Wheeler Ridge. Later, on my own and floating gears, I could upshift and downshift almost in my sleep. You just listen to the engine, watch your RPMs, and hit the sweet spot. Smooth as butter. Dang, I sure miss driving. That's why I watch these videos, and Becca's are better than most.

But for safety reasons you need to be able to use your clutch. To this day I still double clutch every time I get into a new truck.
@ozarks_homesteader
@ozarks_homesteader Жыл бұрын
@@nitemareman1 Agreed. Trucks are different in how loose or tight their gearing is. It's a good practice to double clutch until it becomes apparent where the sweet spot is.
@nitemareman1
@nitemareman1 Жыл бұрын
@@ozarks_homesteader Yes indeed. Imagine getting into a scary situation like a potential runaway and being completely unfamiliar with the feel of the transmission! You need to make that truck an extension of your own body and double clutching to start out is the bet way to do that. If you can successfully double clutch a tight or difficult tranny then you can have confidence you'll be able to instinctively react when needed.

Some of these have already been said: -you need a different instructor; she's making it waaaaay harder than it needs to be, and was trying to teach you everything all at once..........start with the very basics and build from there -your first time ever trying to shift should NOT be on a busy public road; my first few times were on a short crescent with almost zero traffic and stop signs at both ends, so all I could do was use 1-2-3-4 gears, then 4-3-2-1, and stop, which was perfect for practicing shifting lots while still keeping the truck speed pretty low, and not having to worry about other vehicles -the only time the clutch is pressed all the way in is when you're stopped and need to put it in gear (to engage the clutch brake) -only need to push the clutch half way down (at most) when shifting -forget about the range selector until you have 1-2-3-4 and 4-3-2-1 shifting somewhat sorted out -when you do introduce the range selector, go somewhere that you can shift 4-5 and 5-4 gears over and over until you get used to it, then move up to 6-7-8 and higher speeds -forget about the splitter until you have 1-8 and 8-1 gears figured out -lots of shifting vids out there It's really not that difficult once you get the basics figured out; just try not to figure it all out at once and you'll be fine! Start small and build your skills from there. Kudos for posting this; not sure if I'd be able to..........

Keep it up Becca. You'll get the hang of it pretty quickly. I haven't driven American trucks, driving here in Ireland is all Euro trucks. Last truck I had as a manual was a 16speed DAF XF. Basically a H pattern, 4 low range gears and 4 high range gears. Then you have a splitter in each giving you a half gear, totally 16 gears. Very easy to shift and you can skip gears depending on how heavy you are. Love the videos. 👍

@@bigrigbecca Everybody grinds them the first time for awhile, but eventually you learn it. On top of that, it also depends on what engine is powering you on how quick you can float the gears. Cummins drop fast, so you gotta be quick with the shift. An old C15 Cat, you could pull it out of gear, take a drag off a cigarette, then pull it into the next gear. In other words, Cat engines are slow to drop the RPM. I drive a W900 with an 18 speed, and even I screw up if I have to use a truck with a 10 speed if mine is in the shop. With an 18 or 13 speed, when you go from low range to high range, it's just up, over one, and up again. With a 10 speed, it's up, over two, and then down, the gear under reverse. I can't count how many times I have gone from 5th to 7th and the truck almost dies because the RPMs are so low.

Hey Becca I’m originally from the UK 🇬🇧 but live in Houston TX now & drive 18 wheelers for FedEx. When I first got my CDL here I was also struggling with the gears but found a ton of useful KZbin videos which helped me tremendously !! One of the biggest tips I could give you is try to find a cheat for knowing which gear to go in to, for example I took 25 mph added the two numbers together so 7th gear would be correct for that speed, 35mph I would go in to 8th and 45mph (4+5) 9th gear would be selected but that was on a 10 speed box so may be different on your truck…………love your dog buddies by the way…………safe trucking Becca 🚛 😝

Ignoring the thumb split while you learn how to shift is probably a good idea. the first truck I learned in was a 10 speed, so I didnt have the thumb split. then once I got a truck that had them, it was easy af to add the thumb split process to shifting. Youve got this, I see youre picking it up quick. Here pretty soon you will be able to clutch and break due to traffic and then pop back into a gear with little thought

Props to you for not being scared to learn manual transmission. It wasn't that long ago I learned there was a restriction (Auto Only) on CDL's.

Remember not to push the clutch too far if you are using it to shift. That will engage the clutch brake. And it will make it a lot more difficult to find that spot. Remind yourself those first few days. It will make it a lot easier.

somebody should have told me that in the beginning (it took a while), as I was used to synchronized gearbox from Europe where you DO push the clutch all the way in.

Hi, your doing fine young lady, reminds me 41 years ago when I started driving truck. Took me awhile to get it and be comfortable. Few years from now you can jump into anybody's truck and cruise through the gears, plus stick is way more fun that auto, just my opinion Be safe!

Never push the clutch to the floor if the truck is moving! The clutch brake is NOT designed to stop the truck from rolling, that's what the brake pedal is for. The clutch brake lets you get the truck in gear when completely stopped. Your instructor is horrible
