Thank you for this video! I have been watching hours of training videos and this is the first I’ve seen that explained this process. I have my Class B with passenger to drive a school bus. I plan to complete this year and over the summer go to a truck driving school for my class A. Videos like yours are so helpful so that I can get familiar with the process. Thank you again!

Another thing I do is when I'm backing under the trailer I let the turntable hit the trailer or go just under it, get out and check the heights. Sometimes there's a gap, or sometimes you need to drop the airbags to get under it. Great video, even though it seems simple it can be done wrong and damage can be done, trailers can be dropped.

Thanks for the ❤! I've been driving for 10 years, and there are some days, (not every day) but I still manage to get myself in a binds with dropping or hooking loaded trailers from time to time. You can bust the crank shaft if you're not careful, you can jump the 5th wheell, which I haven't done, but have seen done on loaded trailer, you better hope you're granny gears in the trailer are in good working order, and get someone with knowledge to help you! Good idea to carry a pipe 3 feet long that fits over the crank handles just incase so two people can push on it. What to do if the trailer you need to pick up was dropped to low & you can't get under it. You can't ram into it and hope it picks up. I've had the bolt in the crank handle sheer off several times on me while cranking, so it's wise to keep a few machime bolts nuts and washers with you & a basic set of wrenches with you, because when the handle falls on the ground, you aint turning it anymore. The problem with CDL schools and instructional videos is that they are geared towards help you pass the cdl test, but do not help at all with real world situations that will happen to you. This shit always happens on a Friday afternoon when you're very tired & you just want to go home, but now it's cold, you're in a jam, there's no one around and your f**ked. The CDL school I went to gets a A from me for preparing me to pass the CDL test, but gets an absolute F for preparing students for the real world. Like backing. 100 yards straight line back for the test ✅️ and 45° angle back on drivers side with orange cone markers for the test ✅️. That's fine for starters, But nobody does that in the real world. Your just flying blind in the real world until you get into a difficult place. They should take students to different industrial places, where there are different Doc situations. Start easy, and increase difficulty as student progresses backing, so they don't panic the first time you have to block traffic with your truck from both directions (the 4 wheelers have no idea how much stress the truck driver is under) the road is narrow and there is a mailbox that your gonna take out if you start turning to early, so you miss the mailbox now your ass end is too far over, so you have to try again. That's just one scenario! I digress.😊

Thank you. I'm testing for my permit this week and was concerned about drop and hook. But your video made it super easy to understand. Especially the tip of lining up the wheels. I've gotten so much good advice from truckers on here that I almost feel like I could go and drive one now lol.

On landing gear if loaded which way you turn to lift them and if low/high gear? I get confused whether loaded or empty
@family1stdad7 ай бұрын
Raising the landing gear is clockwise Lower the landing gear is counterclockwise You'll hardly ever be able to raise landing gear when the trailer is loaded. In most all cases, raising or lowering landing gear is easiest done in low gear. The handle will need to be cranked slower in lower gear.

Saw your video. At the 4:10 second mark the rubbers on the glad hand and the trailer looked liked they should be replaced. They are made of rubber and take a lot of abuse from the weather. Worn out and cracked rubbers are one of the reasons why trailers lose air pressure.

Hi bro. Need help. I need to unload my trailer on a slope. Am i able to adjust the Jet Stand and try to make the container Horizontal?
@peoplesambassadordm8279 Жыл бұрын
Yup.. good vid demonstration. I see some truckers drop the trailer landing gear 1 inch off the ground before uncoupling from the tractor, is that a good idea? Cuz that seem dumb to me n anybody who got an understanding of precision n ease of connecting stuff
@family1stdad Жыл бұрын
That's a good idea and I do that often. The reason is because when re-coupling to the trailer, it will sometimes be jacked up too high and the skid plate on the tractor can miss the kingpin altogether when backing up to it. When trucks pull out from the trailer, their suspension lowers for the lack of weight. So when the truck hooks up again, the chassis has been lowered too far below the height of the kingpin for a successful connection. So truckers will sometimes lower the height of the trailer upon disconnection.
@peoplesambassadordm8279 Жыл бұрын
@@family1stdad that still eh mke sense. Cuz if theres no weight on the tractor it should b high enough to pick up the kingpin when backing up to it... but that's myopinion

When hook up the tractor with trailer do we need to dump the fifth wheel air so it can come down once we are under the trailer , fill up the air again and hook? Is that right?
@family1stdad Жыл бұрын
Dumping the airbags is not necessary as long as your truck's skid plate can slide under the trailer before connecting to the kingpin

Can you make a video showing what to do when you are trying to back the tractor up but the trailer is either sitting to high or to low???
@family1stdad11 ай бұрын
If the trailer is too low, drop the 5th wheel air bags to drop the level of the skid plate under the trailer. If the trailer is too high, simply turn the trailer crank handle to lower the landing gear until it is level with the skid plate on the tractor.
