I truly believe that with a few changes - longer fuel range, reduced engine heat, more comfortable seat, and less glitchy phone integration - this would be a world-beating motorcycle. As is, it's still amazing, and I love it. Agree or disagree? Yes, Ducati flew me to Italy and fed me nice meals for 3 days. Yes, my review is still impartial. Why? This trip took 5 days with travel, involved some un-reimbursable costs, and I'll be lucky to make $400 from this video. Great review! I’ll take performance over fuel range any day:) I toured with other models before testing a Multi and couldn’t go back after the test ride. It’s hands down the best bike I’ve owned. The V4 engine, suspension and overall handling of this bike is amazing! I don’t think there’s enough significant changes on this model to necessarily justify it, I’d still choose the standard V4s. Thanks for pointing out the negatives, which all bikes have, a great balanced review.

I continue to be fascinated with the concerns about how much heavier bikes are when they have larger fuel tanks. Although I cannot confirm with data, my guess is...the actual weight difference between small/large tanks is minimal. The difference comes from the volume of fuel put inside. To date, I've not seen a rule book that says a 30l tanks needs 30l of fuel. In other words, a 30l tank with 20l of fuel will weigh the same as a 20l tank with 20l of fuel.

Agreed. I have a 1250 GSA with a 30ltr tank. During daily use I put 18-20ltrs in it for commuting otherwise you are effectively burning fuel to carry fuel but I have the option to fill it up when I want to on my trips around Europe. Also worth considering that big tanks go hand in hand with big luggage so a touring bike fully loaded is always going to be heavy no matter how big the tank is.

Hey, it sounds like this machine is perfect for rides with frequent relief stops - to cool your legs and refuel. Winter rides will be nice with heated seat, grips and built-in leg warmer. Italy looks beautiful!

Hello IAN. I have no complaints about your review, but I am sorry that others are focusing only on the shortcomings of the V4S. Fuel economy can be increased if the engine is revved down, which is the general standard for a 1200cc engine. That is a sport bike. The engine is also not hot except for the frame. This is also not a problematic level for a large displacement engine. However, I cannot defend the navigation system alone. It is the worst. You are right, overall it is a great bike. I hope it gets a fair evaluation.

I’ve risen the new Multistrada V4s multiple time and have fallen in love with the bike, the only draw back for me is the poor fuel mileage. A friend of mine and I do touring through Baja on which he rides his Multistrada and best we’ve been able to stretch his tank is 198 miles. The bike needs a 200-250 mile fuel range. Great review.

Another great and honest review, as always. I agree with every point you made, but one. I think (with admitted invested Bias) that the Rally is the best model to get; despite the extra cost. It fixes all of the issues (range, wind, heat (sorta) ect.) that all of the other V4 Multistrada models suffer from. You can always put less fuel in the larger tank for local rides. Thanks Ian. As a former Multistrada V4S owner now a Tuareg I was actually impressed with the gas mileage and gas tank range, I had to take my necessary breaks & never was in a place where I was worried about needing gas, if you're not heavy on the throttle which isn't just as fun 😅, had no issues whatsoever with reliability or parts availability but if getting one of these you know what your want at that point. Problem is they're getting a bit too $$$ now, best to find a lightly used one that someone hasn't ridden.

Realistic mileage with two -up bags and medium sporty riding will yield 35-38 MPG. 170-200 miles has been my experience over 9000 miles.

Ian Fantastic review! As usual you cut right to the bone. I agree, for being the Grand Tour the gas tank is puny. It should have the 30L like my Tiger GT Explorer. Especially when the V4 engine really sucks gas! I drove the regular MultiStrada and the engine heat is awful and the wind protection is not what I'm used to. My Mannequin agrees that I should stick with my Tiger. Ride SAFE and BE safe Sir! 👍👍

I have the V4s full, so I already have all these extras. It still has cylinder deactivation, but it is not until idle. I love my bike so much and wouldn't change it or anything on it. Maybe fuel economy but smiles per mile are awesome.

They should have made a Grand Rally then for homologation. Strip back the off road bits and add the touring accessories while using the newer engine and larger tank.

I echo some of the other comments on here, your points are fair and make good sense. I’ve been thinking of updating my current V4s multi, but this doesn’t cut the mustard. I would buy a new multi “GT” with a bigger tank, better heat control and the rally paint scheme. This one doesn’t look so sharp. Glad you enjoyed the location. We’re a couple of hours from your location, just over the border in the south of France…..much drier here and many superb roads, and many famous ones, so let us know if yer coming back. I think the current multi is perfect for these roads, but sitting in slow traffic in hot weather does create an uncomfortable heat issue. They need to fix that, preferably for the old bikes too.

On the heat subject, the old 1260 and 1200 bikes didnt get that hot in the summer, you could say that the Enduro 1200 and 1260 got hotter in the summer heat due to the larger fuel tank and fairing up front but the standard models were pretty cool in the summer except for maybe the seat would warm up from the rear cylinder. My 2014 is actuallly my summer touring bike for the reason that the BMW RT is hot in the summer.

I bought a 2014 Gran Torisimo (GT) model which is a 1200S model with all the parts in the parts bin at that time. It is the way to go if your wanting all the necessary touring parts and features. I still feel as if my 1200 is a capable machine with 150 HP. Yes i changed the seat added a GPS but it has the trunk, bags, bag liners and aux lights. One thing that my bike has that the new ones don’t have is a17” front wheel. Yes i have gone off road with mine but just on dirt and gravel roads and trails. No real off road stuff and i didn’t buy it to be a dual sport anyway. On rough roads the Multi 1200 is like soo good at smoothing out bad surfaces. You hardly even notice the bad road surfaces. On my RT the fairing was shaking and rattling plus i had to slow down to keep it under control. Not on my Multi, just power through, it was almost like being on a dual sport soaking up the unruly road surface. I dont think i need to trade up to a V4. Only the service cost on the V4 is better. Besides my Multi is paid for!

I agree with other comments; what riders want is an accurate and comprehensive description of a bike’s performance. That said, bias is unavoidable and there’s always subjective and objective impressions. The reviews this site offers are getting better and better - as good a place as any to figure out if the juice one gets from a test ride is worth the squeeze of finding one.

Well done review Ian, and I agree with your comments 100%. As a owner of new '22 V4S, I've averaged 29.9mpg through my 1st 1k miles, so I anticipated the Grand Tour surely would have the Rally tank on it? Bluntly, its an exercise in accessorizing, although at a better value. So why not an accessory gas can for the rear seat? 🤔 I'd buy one in Ducati Red please. Fortunately, it is an astonishly incredible machine with unmatched fit and finish. I think of mine as 3 bikes for the price of 2 - I can take a long tour, to do some track laps, and then go hit the trails. You'd have to stop for gas prior to each, but its name says it all: Multistrada ("many roads"). Keep up the great reviews!

Totally agree with your question to Ducati re 19" front Ian.. If the 19" front is superior then why spec it for the Pikes Peak?! Sounds like they were really trying to suggest that it has offroad chops and therefore keep KTM at bay? However a major problem with 19" front is that there is close to zero choice of performance road rubber - And on soft road sports tour rubber you esentially only have another sports touring machine.. At that price? Sounds like V4 RS or Pikes Peak are therefore weapons of choice. Be great if you could nominate the front wheel size and offer as an option actually

When I look at this Grand Tour version, there is not one thing that appeals to me that would convince me to give up my 2021 1250RT. It looks like most of the day was spent in 3rd gear to keep the rev's up to stay away from the clunky lower rev range. Nope, not for me, oh and one more thing. What's a chain?? :)

Well done and honest review. I an on my 2nd Multi now 2017 1200S tour and I was looking to upgrade if they offered larger tank similiar to the Rally. I completely agree with you on their de ision not to offer the larger tank they have it backwards. Off road should be lighter on road should be heavier. There is not that much difference in handling from Rally with larger tank. I was going to upgrade now im not since im really buying a V4S what a let down. Must be time for something else. I ha e repeatly asked everyone including Ducati and they told me over a year ago to look forward to them adding these features , doesnt look like that will happen now. They induced their own issues with this bike by not building off the RALLY this is a step back. Ducati needs to listen to its customer base. Thanks for the excellent and truthful review.

Great to see some independent youtubers on these launch events. I was almost decided to get the V4 Rally next spring. Now I'm a bit torn between the GT and the Rally. I plan to mostly use it for road touring: good paved roads, bad paved roads and some unpaved roads. The extra offroad ability of Rally is not something I need or want. But I do want the extra range, better wind protection and the improved engine. The Rally engine not only has better heat management and slightly better fuel consumption, it also has an improved torque curve. It should behave slightly better in lower RPMs. But is it all really worth the extra couple grands? First world problems ...

12:34 I am sure that the GT version is mostly on road which means not difficult to get from gas station to another, small town definitely has gas stations ⛽️, while the ralley is all about adventuring through forests and off-road terrain which means you can stay off the road for quite a while.

That average fuel consumption of more than 8l/100km, if the value on the moto display is correct, would really remove any desire to buy this ducati. Luckily for me, I don't have enough money for such an expensive bike anyway 😅

Note how the Ducati integrates the TFT displays on their bikes. BMW take note on how to make the TFT look integrated on the bike and not just tossed up between the fairing and handlebars. A much more finished look to the Ducati.

The phone holder doesn’t exist on the GS either. I use the Quad Lock mount with dampener anyway and would on that bike as well. I love the range on my GSA and would also want that on this bike. Even my Goldwing CarPlay is troublesome. If you lose the helmet comm connection it bails on CarPlay. I’ve had this happen several times on longer rides when the battery on the helmet dies.

That price point is a big pill to force down. Fuel capacity could be higher. Should come with crash bars for that price, too. It's absolutely stunning for sure but I really feel like when you buy a bike at that level of expense, you shouldn't need to add anything to it after the fact. It's should come with everything you'd want.

Well I am looking at this exact model currently and was looking to buy this summer. But if heat is a problem IDK i will move forward with it. I've gotten rid of my last V-Twin Indian Springfield because I got tired of V-Twin heat. If this is the same I will have to pass on it. Will test ride in 2 days

I have a 2014 Multistrada and it has a small compartment in the fairing on the right side. I keep my registration and insurance card in there. I do think they should bring that back but make it a little bigger and take the compartment off of the gas tank. Using a tank bag interferes with the tank located compartment.

I don't find the tank beeing to small...if you drive like a maniac, you would still manage more than 200km per tank, and I'd like to see someone gives it that kind of poke for full 200km on public roads. If you tour it, it will manage 280-350km per tank easy, at least v4s did it. And I'm not talking slooooow riding...normal with fluid riding and numerous overtakes. P.s I think 8.4 l/100km is normal for a test ride...as you said, you had it mostly above 5000 rpm to exploit that powerful engine. Oh and of course...love your reviews, they are really in my top 5 on YT. Thanks for that!

I see the attractiveness of this machine. I also see the rising attention that the brand has been receiving all over western world. This bikes (Ducati motorcycles) are really eye catching, but, do they feel really premium? I ask this because I tried one Multistrada V4S about a month ago, and my reference for comparison is BMW different models ( of their range I didn’t ridden yet the 750 and 850 models, but that’s it), where this heat issues don’t occur. Everything feels smoother and softer, the seat, the general feel of the suspension, even the brakes, everything well tucked in engineering wise. And I ask something else:- am I going to trade my comfortable bike for another machine that in fact has some more horsepower and top end ( which I already know I will poorly take advantage due to speed control policies in action, that are more and more restrictive and penalizing)? Ducati is leveling up with BMW in a lot of aspects, but construction and engine longevity, is the Multistrada leveled with a bike like the GSA? From the test ride I could do (three hours with the bike), I could state or establish a round answer, but I could get the feeling of the bike, and it didn’t overwhelmed me enough to trade my GSA rally version, even at idle I prefer the GSA engine work , in low and medium revs I still prefer the suspension and the engine delivery of power, only at top end and high speeds I found a little more enjoyable the Multistrada. But how many times do I get the opportunity in a safe manner to do it? The looks are subjective, but for me it doesn’t get into my heart. So, I honestly ask, What’s is this thing about the Multistrada that everyone talks about? I truly can’t get it, I truly Can’t see it. The video is a supreme piece of work, like you’ve been doing. Would you consider the engine heat a dealbreaker? Also did they fix it on the rally edition.

Ducati take note. Ian just gave you the advice you need to follow. Pity they did not consult him beforehand. Most important, the engine should be the updated version with cylinder deactivation. And the larger fuel tank, for Europe where petrol stations are numerous, is not so essential, especially when you save weight.

With the choice of the Rally having the big tank, I can't help but think it's because it compares closer to the GSA. I'm sure that had something to do with it. With the price, i bet they were thinking they would only do one bike like that and they chose the rally to go up against the GSA.

On the smaller fuel tank issue, probably it’s because it’s harder to find a gas station when you’re off roading and long distance ride as compare to a road bias ride.

How Ducati should answer your question regarding Rally/Grand Tour fuel tank: Rally is meant to be used in places where Gas Stations are not common, not so Grand Tour. In general too many versions of Multistrada V4, but no Sport Touring V4 model. “Panistrada” in Ducati’s great alu and red combo could be attractive despite lacking interest in ST bikes.

Strange, they list the GT has a new model, yet it doesn't have the rear cylinder deactivation, so it's the standard model with the options catalogue thrown at it. It's equivalent of the BMW GS1250TE.

A 100% correct - to go with 19" front wheel on any of THIS type of a bike ! I've, for example, ridden the Honda NT1100 - NOT good !

Cylinder deactivation wouldn't do much for mileage since it's only under 4k rpm which is way under highway speeds even in 6th gear, still under 60 there, so it would only help while cruising around town, at least in USA.

Ian, you have become THE number one reviewer in the world, in my opinion and I congratulate you on your success, which only is due to your hard work. As for the bike, I feel it is too much of too much. Too expensive, too powerful. IMHO you can do the same trips with same comfort on a Tiger 900 GT, at half the price almost, and I'd much rather have an Africa Twin or a Tiger for the longer touring trips and a smaller and lighter bike for off road, at about the same price. For me, a Yamaha Tracer GT Plus is more than enough for touring and an enduro bike for off road. I believe this bike is for someone with too much money and not enough knowledge!

10:49 it was 70 km/h 9:38 and you've done 144 km/h a few seconds before 😉 there *probably* would be non-strict threshold about 20-30 km/h, but not 70+ 😅
