Brandon here: One observation as the miles progressed. The MPG variance between the two bikes seemed to grow at some of the later stops (further in the GS' favor). I think it's safe to say the GS could be as much as 10% better in some circumstances. As Ian mentioned, the larger fuel capacity of the Multistrada helps restore some of the potential range disadvantage of it being a thirstier motor. These are big power, heavy, upright bikes at the end of the day, so not the ultimate choices for fuel efficient motorcycling.

Any MPG differences while offroad? I find my 1290 ADV will suffer MPG into the low 30s for any kind of riding that is biased towards 1st/2nd gear, especially offroad. This can make a big difference when riding to a remote offroad location.

@Chad Seguin Hard to say based on our limited dirt time which was spent in the mid to higher gears. It was after this portion of the trip that the variance grew slightly. I suspect you're right and the difference may be greater on the Ducati (higher consumption in the lower gears) because it's not as happy at low revs. The 1250 has a big torque and power delivery (easy) advantage even at the lowest RPMs.

Having owned both bikes for around 20k miles. I can say that at 6' 2" with the standard screens (unlike this test), the airflow is far better on the Ducati at freeway speeds, and both are better than my current Tiger 1200 Rally Explorer. And if you can get 200 miles out of the Ducati between refills, I'll eat my Arai! Good test - keep up the good work!

Great comparison Ian, as a former Multi V4S owner this brings a smile to my face, definitely a Ducati thing with not being happy in the low revs. Also you can keep the ignition turned to on and & there's the power button on the handlebar (front brake side) so you don't have to keep turning that knob on/off, both are great bikes
@bgorrell
@bgorrell Жыл бұрын
The light button does do something - it toggles between DRL (Daytime running lights) vs standard low beams. Also the V4S normally comes with a standard windscreen instead of that shorty on this one. I quickly opted for the touring windscreen on my V4S and it made a huge difference! Regarding the vibration in the mirrors you've experienced I'm really curious why because I don't experience any vibs in my mirrors at all...

Lovely to see you guys having fun! Thank you for the work you do. Love your gear too by the way. Looking at getting the Klim Baha S4 jacket soon. Some observations from my side. 6th gear, 50 mph and you open the throttle at/below 3500 rpm, right. But the main thing is why do that 🙃 Just drop a gear or two with the fabulous quick shifter and disappear mate. It’s perfectly fine at low rpm but don’t keep her in 6th gear at such low rpm, it’s not meant for that. Keep the gear/s and rpm low and she chugs along perfectly well. It’s not that she doesn’t like low rpm or low speeds, you have to match the rpm with the gear/speed and there are no issues whatsoever. For slow speed running, if that’s what you want to do, put it in Urban mode and see how docile she becomes and will chug along easily in city traffic. You need the touring windshield which is available as an official accessory, no need for the add on windshield you have. The button on the right side is to switch on the low headlight beam if you have the automatic lights switched off in settings. When you start the bike, the DRL switches on, then press the light switch and it puts the low beam on, bike needs to be running at the time or it does nothing. Disclaimer - Multistrada V4S owner 😊 Cheers

Nice vid! I have a 2022 Multi V4s myself, and i have had five big GS''s, the last one being a 1250 GSA. About consumption, i have found a similar result as you: Driving normally, the Multi is not far behind the GS. Conserning comfort / suspension: Did you play around with the suspension settings on the Duc? Put it in the softest setting front & back, reduce the preload manually in the menu and you have one very comfy bike. The number of combinations you can make in the suspension / preload department on the Multi is just amazing, and something the GS lacks. Both are fantastic bikes, and imho, the two best adv bikes on the market.

Due to increasing age and short legs I bought the Multi V2S after three GSs (all good bikes), the last a GSA. Despite the lower hp and torque I think it’s a hugely underrated bike because it’s very light and economical but it’s a road biased bike. Only thing I’d like in Europe is a heated seat, I’m based in northern England and the blind spot mirrors, we have very busy highways. Puig touring windshield solves the buffeting, higher and wider.

Surprising mpg numbers there, I thought the Ducati would be a gas guzzler but it's less than 5% down on the GS, with both having similar tank range. The Multistrada's mpg would probably drop a ton once you start using all the power at the top end.

The Multistrada is $45,000 new in Australia. Drive one out of the showroom and the market price drops like a stone. The other reason to buy the Beemer is dealer support. There is only one manufacturer that does it better and that's Honda. And here the top speed limit is 110kph and severely enforced, so what's the point of 170hp anyway when your mate on a 125 with 13hp can almost keep up with you.

I'm in shock!! I've been scouring makes and models for another ADV style touring motorcycle and these two are in the top 5 spots. The only downside for the BMW is their "low maintenance" shaft drive is now more labor intensive than a chain... The blind spot protection is fantastic to have. I test rode a Triumph Tiger with the blind spot detection in the metro DC/Northern VA area and it was just amazing how well it worked. As for range, well, the BMW can come with a larger tank, the MS, you get what you get. Awesome content on this!!

That’s a revelation on the fuel consumption, after 2 years of hearing the Ducati is bad on fuel. I’ve gotta say I’ve never found the Ducati to be bad, and it was even better once the full akro pipe was fitted. But I’m sure it may differ a little more between the two bikes when calving cannons, or revving. I loved the GS, but I didn’t choose it because it just felt asthmatic when pushing the revs, such as when passing a line of cars uphill. Whereas the Ducati seems to relish those events.

This was a really good video Ian! I enjoyed the insights both of you had, and of course the bantering back and forth. A couple of weeks ago I finally test drove an 2023 R1250 GS. Two things I noticed in my test drive (which you also mentioned), was just how silky smooth the GS is at speed. It felt like riding on a cloud. The other thing is the quick shifter - not as smooth and definitely a little clunky, unless you rev it up quite a bit. At slower speeds, it's definitely not as smooth. I had several GS’s over the years, and now I see some other not Japanese bikes, like KTM and DUCATI, coming forward with their newer big trail bikes proposals and try to get their slice of the pye in terms of Market and it’s perfect natural and welcome from the community of Bike appreciators. And I m not generalizing, but the Multistrada V4 that from my point of view is like a big cat very well behaved besides some electronic features where they have tremendous merits, like the radar on front and back of the bike, it lacks towards the BMW R 1250 GS the refinement of the design of some parts, like the engine for instance and a lot of materials used to cover the skeleton of the machine, like fenders and plastic parts that shape the body of the bike, they feel and seem very different, ultimately,inferior in quality, the plastique parts, like the wind shield and others, compared to what BMW offers. I think that this particular point is evident. Also the paint job is not a premium work, IMHO. The bike is commercialized as Premium and everything should be of that level, and I don’t see that there (maybe on the Pikes peak version or the Rally) , not on the V4S. Black glossy paint of the rims? ? Couldn’t agree with the choice. Plastic parts in metallic grey paint?? No, please, no. At least on the BMW the plastic parts are Matt painted black and the rest in other colors but of solid paint, that’s how Ducati should do things. This is one the few bikes that I was more impressed to see on film and video than on the real presence. It was, only disappointing. About the performance, it was ok but only alive after 4500 rpm. Until that is almost like riding a tall Scooter. That was what I felt. Next year BMW is expected to launch a whole renewed big GS model and I think than , Ducati will lose the slight leverage that it has over the German bike on some important and innovative electronic features like the ones I mentioned here above.✌️✌️

I agree. At 5'9 the standard bike makes more sense to me, and I don't need 400 mile range. Also, the 2023 bikes have an 'old style' halogen bulb headlight due to the chip shortage.

Hello again Ian. This is Alan from Simi Valley (Kawasaki Versys 650). I did a review of my Versys on my channel (Retired Al Fixall). I was wondering about the seat cover you use on your beautiful GS 1250. Who makes it and what do you think of it? Thanks!

BMW CARDAN INSPECTION ( DRIVE SHAFT ) DRAIN PLUG FITTED. More than a few people that have had the rubber check valve installed are saying that it fits very loose and one person said his got pushed inside the drive housing and is just laying in there. Another said they are junk and fall off, and ''mines has now fell inside the runner bungs are rubbish", ''the rubber valve they install is crap, any external pressure dislodges the valve internally leaving an open hole. There seems to be no lip on the outside to prevent it from being pushed inside. I was thinking if this is the case, perhaps some black silicone seal would be a good idea which would be easy to do. What do you think? Should we just plug it back up or use a silicone to make it stay put? Thank You!!

I'll be looking for a bigger bike to make longer trips this spring. Currently riding a CB500X with the full Rally Raid kit. The GS-A is at the top of the list. I am looking at others though.

Like you, I do not have mirror vibes. But then again, I do not have a freaking gopro mounted on a stick on my mirror arm !! Also, that silly added windshield is a disadvantage too, changes the aerodynamics of the bike. All his complaints was from his own doing.

@@BIGGGESTAL YES , YES and YES !! After watching this video yesterday, I put on my gear and headed out for a ride. Its amazing how smooth and powerful this bike it. Was cruising at 145mph in a blink of an eye and suspension soaked up all the bumps the freeway had to offer, and I was still able to see images in my mirrors :) haha

Hi, can you comment on the use of your Klim adventure helmet. Always wondering if these types of helmets are good/appropriate for freeway riding... Is helmet brim interfering in anyway in high speed? Perhaps it helps with sun glare in your face? What's your opinion? Thanks much!

On the gs how much would the maintenance/repair bills be in 5 to 10 years ? I've got a 1150r that has 43000 miles on it and everything from the engine back needs overhauled costing more than the bikes worth. Now the paint or finish on the inside of the gas tank has come loose and all the wiring and fuel pump has rotted away . Tank repairs/replacement ,new fuel pump and wiring? Beautiful bike loved the engine hated the suspension but no matter now ,there she sits , full of good memories .

I think the pre water-cooled years of the 1200 GS was their best. 2010-2012. Before they started building starships full of electronics. Maybe 2013-2016, at best. But the 1250 are too sophisticated and being recalled twice a year ... Don't get me started on the Ducatis. Lol

So I own a 2021 R1250GS and a V4 Pikes Peak. I think between the standard V4 and the GS I prefer to GS for its intended use. Yes the shifting sucks but overall I think it is an easier bike to ride. Bring in the Pikes Peak and it is a diff comparison. The Pikes Peak is literally the best handling motorcycle I have ever ridden and that includes all sport bikes I have ridden. The GS is a torque monster, handles incredibly well, comfortable and predictable. The Ducati is more exciting for sure and the Pikes Peak takes that to anther level. For the sake of this comparison in the vid I agree with Ian that I would take the GS. One thing I will add, for travel that includes off the beaten path the GS all the way but for pure distance travel nothing compares to a Street Glide or Road Glide (with a Russell Daylong Seat....;-).

Hi Ian, I've a R1200GS TE Rallye 2018 here in the UK. I have toured on it in the UK and Europe and the only negative is the wind buffeting and noise when cruising high speed. I am 5'10" and wear a Shoei NeoTecII helmet. It's not practical or comfortable to hunker down behind the screen, so I was interested in the wind deflector you were using in this video. Are you able to advise the make and model of deflector? Thanks. Enjoying the videos and content, so please keep it up.
