After your extensive and awesome review I went and looked at a loaded AT. Unfortunately, we only have parts changers instead of troubleshooting technicians where I live. Decided that a DR650 was the better choice.

Hi Ian, Apple CarPlay is one of the best features and you skipped it in this excellent video. 🙃😅 I bought a wireless dongle and that works fantastic, no cable needed anymore for CarPlay. As you mentioned you can use CarPlay without a headset connected, just push and hold the back button when the screen asks for the headset. Further the function buttons on top of the handlebars left and right. Right for selecting a function (like fog-lights and handlebar-heaters, etc), left to adjust. Thanks for uploading this tutorial. I own one over two years and get along with it very well.

Thank you very much for the effort to explain in detail all the parameters and customization that the bike allows. I don't think there is any video with so much detail and so well explained. It is something that I appreciate and that helps many of us. Surely you have had to spend a lot of time but I think it was worth it. Very well narrated and explained. A thousand thanks!!!!!!

Hi there. The electronics on the Honda CRF1100 are learnable without much effort. Don't be intimidated by the electronic cluster of buttons. Moreover, I installed the LSK off-road dongle on my 2023 ATAS, which completely enhanced my experience when riding off-road. One touch of a button and it shuts everything off namely, traction control, wheelie control, and ABS to the rear.

Thank you so much for this video. It’s the wheelie control that was stopping me on steep bouncy hills! I will test this today. I dented my gas tank and broke a pannier bracket mount because I thought it was the traction torque control that needed to be off. I am going to watch this several times and then go ride. Man, I kept loosing power when I needed it most and this bike is too heavy to save when you start to go over on a steep rocky hill. I am loving the bike otherwise. Cheers from Edmonton Alberta Canada!

Just got mine a few days ago. The DCT is really good. makes riding a bit more enjoyable than my former KLR 650, smoother in every way. Just took a 200 mile trip the other day. As a new rider, my big feet made shifting hard, (size 18 shoes) so learning was a bit slower. The DCT improved the speed of learning for me and helps me to focus on controlling the bike and riding it. Makes traffic lights a lot less stressful. Glad i got mine and looking forward to many happy miles. Dealer said Honda is still catching up and they could not special order one as it is still behind from Covid. So since they only had one in stock, i got my Adventure Sport with DCT as fast as i could :)

When the screen pops up, press the enter button. Until then, the separate screen below will help you. You can also add a DCT shifter, which is very useful.

Just saw that a few of the big names (BMW & KTM) are releasing their version of “automatic transmission”. Honda has been perfecting DCT for decades now so it’ll be interesting to see how the others look. Additionally, the difference between the DCT on my 2014 NC and now my 2024 AT are crazy. 2024 is buttery smooth.

Be proactive and practice as I have big plans in the near future. I'm hoping that next year that I will be able to fly to America and thank you personally at one of the meets that you attend too. Nice job. Some more informations after 53k km/33k miles. DCT is the best part of the Africa in my opinion. Now BMW and KTM also make some kind of automatic transmissions. DCT is the best for your passenger too. The right function button also switch the fog lights, If you have. But the fog lights is a must if you ride in dark, the main lamps are very weak. I've always switched on the G-switch, so I put that to the "star" button. G-switch also mean a little bit higher rpm gear changing. I've never used the HAT in simple "D" at least I've swithed on the "G". You can stall. ;) I did it many times (at least once a year, so it's a rare situation, and my Africa is from 2020). Could make 2 stalls in 100m. ;) A nice trick to restart it. Hold/press the front and a rear breaks and press the engine start button. Yes, off road you have to switch off the wheelie control. I almost crashed, beacuse it cut the power at the worse time. By the way I've switched off the HSTC too. :)

To all those who don't like that CLUNG - when engaging the D ( on DCT, or the 1st gear on manual ) : just move / roll / slide the bike forward - pushing with you feet ( obviously, when sitting on it ) some steps - to approx. 3-5 km/h. The 1st gear will engage much smoother..... Up-hill - can be slightly tricky 😆

Something else to mention, and it freaks you out if you don't know this. Its a "tap to start". You don't need to hold the button in the start position. Press and release, bike will start all by itself. Unnerving if you don't know, have ignition on and brush the start button.

This is what a you tube video should be. Great Job Ian!. I haven't even bought one yet...lol Update ..Ok I bought my Manual Africa Twin ES Adventure sport home today and coming from a Goldwing was a little dissapointed to see that there is no accessory mode. Sitting there for an hour playing with buttons while the headlights are on is going to drain the battery pretty quick but I love sitting on a bike and learning it all slowly and now i feel like I'm on a timer. Is it ok to have it on the battery tender while I fiddle with it just to keep the charge going?

Great video Ian, the AT gets bad press from most of the other videos I've seen on it regarding the electronics and amount of buttons it has, but watching this has totally changed my mind about it, I can see that once you get familiar with it, it's a good system. Rich Vidda has a good video about using a wireless dongle for Apple Carplay, so you don't have to plug in your phone with a cable.

Great vid Ian 👍🏻. I knew about all the controls before as I read the manual 😃. But I watched your vid to support your channel. The electronic suspension is absolutely worth the extra cash. It’s a shame honda didn’t address all the idiosyncrasies with the settings as they are not intuitive and it would’ve been nice if they would’ve given the look of the screen layout an update like their other new bikes (although the screen is perfectly good and easy to read).

This was so cool!!!!! Thank you. DCT transmissions will eventually be offered by every major OEM I believe. I'm looking at touring bikes and narrowed it down to the Gold Wing and K1600GT. Both have reverse, but the GW has DCT, a compelling feature for long days in the saddle. BTW, I don't see any other content makers at the speeds you do on the two-track and single-track you do from the light bikes to the big bore ADV's. You're crazy! LoL

The positioning of the Enter and Back buttons actually is more useful in this configuration. I find i use the Enter button more often, hence having it more accessible and less of a reach for my thumb is a benefit. Yes, positioning is opposite to convention, but this just shows how the Honda engineers were thinking about real world use cases when laying the system out. Now, the function +/- toggle switch is a different story... hard to get my short fat fingers to reach it!

Hi ! I do own the new AT 2024/DCT/EERA. The only thing I don't like is: the tires (Metzeler Karoo street/in Austria) which are very noisy and loud and don:t work soll well in rain as they are told to do...and the apple car play cannot be connected without a headset.I will change the tires to Pirelli Scorpion Rally STR - for my purposes the best ones! During riding it is not possible to change the Sport Mode (I/II/III) - only from D to the preselected S Mode...thats annoying (or maybe I did something wrong...?) Everything else is just perfect, I do have the Rally package + the possibility to change gears with my left foot... sorry my English is not the best - by the way I want to thank you for the video -there are some points now more clear for me than it was before. Great work! I have just ridden around 1500KM but I am totally impressed from the electrical. suspension and its possibilities... Best Bike I ever had (I am 57 and I already hat a lot different ones/also BMW GS...). Markus from Austria.

The wheelie control will prevent you from going up a steep incline even with traction control turned off. As soon as the rear wheel is spinning and your real speed is above a fast walking pace, the computer thinks you are doing a wheelie because the front wheel is higher than the rear wheel . The computer will cut so much power that you'll just stop there. So yeah, disable it when off road. But a least with the DCT, it is quite easy to get going again even on loose surfaces as you can take off slowly and in control with no fear of stalling the engine.

So if I want to ride a wheelie, I have to turn off traction control AND wheelie control every time I turn it on and off? I currently have a ‘17 and I only have to turn off traction control to pop a wheelie.

You definitely don’t need a headset for android auto or apple car play. Another thing I learnt was if you hold the back button down for 5 seconds once everything has booted up, then it removes the need for a headset and boots car play straight up (as long as phone is connected). Regrading it dropping out, if you use a decent cable and prevent all vibration then it’s fine. Most issues tend to be with phones mounted on the handlebars. Mines either in a tank bag or I have a cable tan through the bike so I can connect it in my tail bag too

Every time you turn your bike back on yes. If you’re stopping briefly you can turn off by the red stop button leaving the screen on and then you don’t need to. I often do when using google maps etc. Just make sure on start up you leave it long enough for everything to boot up and just cancel when it says connect headset.

Honda does not have a list of tool sizes and I want to carry it on the bike w/o tools I don’t need vs an Amazon metric bike kit that might be missing certain size tools. Since owners manual or website does not have a list/ kit for sale info, how do I go about picking the right size tools?

Hi! I was eager for your review, especially for the standard/manual AT! Do you feel any jerkyness on the throttle in low gear/low speeds? Btw, now I'm again confused with the EB pie chart, I thought full pie was the least engine braking (same reasoning as with P pie chart...). Also, do you know the max range for setting up the rear rebound and compression (AT non-ES)? Somehow here in Europe the manual does not tell us that, only for the front suspension. Thank you very much for your AT videos, the waiting was worthwhile, will definitely be wanting more!

On my 2024 AT adventure. When i go to the maintenance page and select cornering lights, only the right one illuminates. is this normal? I would expect both would come on.

Let me see if I have this right… if I want maximum wheelie control ( minimum front wheel lift) I select the highest number?
