what purpose does the regular frag cannons perform? are they just keep the shields down with thermal damage? Also, why not use any heat sinks? is that to keep the thargoid from changing focus?

I use the regular frags for shield stripping. If a thargoid shield drops in under 6 seconds after it is deployed (unless the thargoid is in lightning mode) it will deploy a panic shield. Therefore I need to break the shield immediately after 6 seconds but not before, which on a basilisk equals a full clip of the 4 modshards and 4 clips of the regular frags. Heatsinks are irrelevant for anything other than recharging weapons capacitor and using silent running while staying outside of detection range (500-600 meters) is the only thing that prevents the thargoid from waking up and emp'ing or shooting caustic missiles.
