The three range speedshift unit on these tractors (24 speeds), was renowned for being troublesome. The main issue was the installation of the 'O' rings, seperating the different compartments. The sealing was so weak that it was possible to arrive at a situation where two different ranges would try to engage at the same time with the inevitable mechanical calamity that ensued. Mid range was the most reliable, since it was engaged by large Belleville washers, whereas High and Low ranges were actuated hydraulically. The actuating valve could also be troublesome in operation. A kit was available from MF to convert these 3 speed powershift units back to the standard 8 speed setup, and whilst pretty much bulletproof, obviously gave much less flexibilty of operation. The original versions of these tractors (MF 2770 & 2800) introduced in the latter part of 1976, featured a CAV Distributor type Fuel Injection Pump, developed specifically for V8 engines, but was very problematic. Perkins then went for the more traditional and reliable inline Fuel Injection Pump, made by either Simms or Bosch. Lee Elfes, MFs Head of Engineering in the era of these tractors, was directly blamed for the damage to MFs reputation in the large tractor sector of the market, due to the shortcomings discussed previously. Albert Thornborough, the head honcho at MF at the time, then sacked Elfes, despite the fact that he was married to Thornboroughs' daughter. It would seem that even nepotism will only get you so far ! When the Detroit factory closed in 1983, that was effectively the end of these large V8 tractors. A similar range of tractors was introduced to European markets in 1979, and were built at Beauvais, France. These were the MF 2000 series and all featured Perkins straight six cylinder engines of varying horsepower ratings. With the demise of the American fsctory and its high horsepower tractors, these Eurpoean built tractors were supplied to the US market for a few years, designated the MF 3500 series. Again, as per the European product, they all sported the straight six inline Perkins engine. They featured electronic linkage control, supplied by Robert Bosch, a German Company.

My sources for the info on the US produced 2000s, came from a variety of sources; Parts Books, literature, on line forums with input from MF Dealerships and personnel who had to bear the brunt of farmers criticisms of these tractors. Also, there is a quarterly US publication dedicated soley to Ferguson, Massey Harris and Massey Ferguson, called 'Legacy Quarterly' and well worth a subscription. It too features input from former MF Detroit factory personnel and again former MF Dealership personnel. I'm assuming that you're referring to the British built MF 1200/1250 tractors ? What information do you require on them - perhaps I can help a little ?

Dad still has his 2775, his 2nd tractor, purchased used in 1990(?). Had it restored a few years ago. Nothing beats the sound of that big V8 cranking to life. And that chrome throttle handle is too cool. The cabs were way ahead of their time.

Always fun to see these old field warriors still in good condition and running strong. It's great to see a JD 230 disk still working well in the field. These were game changer disks, the cone blades and over the top main frames produced excellent cutting and mixing of soil and crop residue. They also left the fields flat, you didn't see the ridging traditional style disks left on fields. The JD 235 disks which followed addressed many durabilty and functional issues found in the 230s.

It was neat to see the 230. I remember those ridges in the late 70’s and early 80’s. The flexibility to follow contours in the field and leveling really made great strides.

When I was in college in the early 90s I worked for a farmer in central Kansas who had an 1155. Spent quite a few hours in that tractor, mostly with a field cultivator.

My next door neighbor had one, I worked for him a little as a teenager. I never got to drive it, but he did all the field work with it and never a bit of trouble, but it was pretty new at that time. Lightest work it did was pull 16 ft grain drill. He ran that tractor fast and hard.

I grew up with Ford guy but i realy regret not doing Massey ... i think they the best easiest to maintain and if needed heavy internal repairs on the market in the era . These tractors make John Deere in the same Era look like a joke 😳

I use the original Sales brochures to give the specifications for the tractors I share and unfortunately they never list the torque. The only brand that does is a Fendt. Very odd. With out the company’s advertised specs I do not want to speculate what a tractor offers.

Duals provide more traction and reduce compaction. The tractor puts more power to the ground with dual wheels and rides smoother. I rode in a Fendt with large singles and felt it power hopped allot. I ran the Fendt with triple rear tires and front duals or ran smooth.

@@bigtractorpower I corrected my post. I means Perkins did not make a big inline 6 like the Cummins 8.3. They have a 6.354 and the newer 6.0. MF went to Valtra for the a bigger engine for the 3670 and 3680/3690.

My Dad was a MF dealer. I said right away that 2000 series is a copped up nightmare. 3 speed power shift was poorly designed plus too much spread in speed between shifts. Hydraulic hoses running all over the place.

Massey had a powerful line up with the V8 2745, 2775 and 2805. They sure did not hold up. I was very excited to get to feature this 2775. They are hard to find.

Better to have a parts machine laying around than no parts at all, we recently went to get lots of parts for our 7000 series Deere planter from our mega dealer, 17 stores, we bought their entire stock of 7000 series Guage wheel bearings, all two of them
