This is such a simple but super effective technique that I've never used before. Instead I've used side chain compression and also soothe2 with a side chain input. The issue with both technique is that you get a lot of gain reduction when the side chain signal is loud and when it would cut through anyways. And you get no gain reduction when the side chain is low and the gain reduction would be needed. Using a gate and flip the output solves this in such an elegant way. Also that track sounds fire!

Dude yes. I've stumbled on sidechain gate with a wet/dry mix while messing around and got some good results, but doing it this way takes it to the next level! You've inspired me to try this way more. The gate built into Reaper does this too, but it has separate volume faders for wet and dry, which is way less musical to dial in by feel compared to this. I'm gonna change my approach now and go full wet and instead tweak the plug-in instance's wet/dry blend. Didn't know about the KHZ gate either, Will definitely give it a shot. But we have to take under consideration that the "whistle" or any other instrument that we want to have focused also has expression it is at times louder and at times quieter and if the piano ducks always by 1db there's a chance that sometimes the whistle could be quieter than the piano, this is why the fab filter makes more sense

what also might help in this scenario is putting and expander on the percussion! It would be an even better solution actually. since you don’t need other sounds for that. it just very smoothly cleans it out.

I've only known sidechaining to compressors, which I never really liked, and this seems nicer. I've tried just upping the volume of the prioritized tracks (like the guitar here) then grouping them up and using a compressor on the group, so it would automatically push down the lower prio sounds whenever a higher one played. In practice this never really sounds that great though, or at least I'm not able to make it sound the way I want.

Hey ma man. You can do this exact thing with the Fabfilter Compressor, adjusting the range to the for example 2db you said and adjusting the threshold so it always ducks 2db when the sidechained track plays. Also as your using logic, from a pic I have seen from its Gate device, you can also 'Flip' which is implied by the 'Ducker' and sidechain it also.
