Before choosing your multi tool, check your bike over. You'll definitely need 2mm, 2.5, 3, 4, and 5mm allen keys. You may also need 6, 8, or even 10mm. But many new bikes also have Torx driven bolts, which need a torx bit (star shaped) and those come in different sizes as well. You'll want to have the multi-tool that can turn all your bolts. If in doubt, take it to your local bike shop, and tell them you're looking for a multitool and need help figuring out what drivers it needs to have. They'll be happy to help you out - especially if you buy the multitool from them.

Hide $20 in there for emergencies too. Sometimes coffee is an emergency. 😂

If you don't have a bit of an old tyre an old MTB trick I used to carry is a toothpaste tube, similar size to this with the top cut off but could save you on a sidewall blowout or damage 👍🏼

I always carry a survival tool, a 38-cal S&W with 2" barrel for mountain lions in the Sierra, or 2-legged predators in the city. Wouldn't want any "surprises" while changing my master chain link out in the boonies or on the bike trail. Of course if your life isn't that important to you, don't bother -- easy come, easy go -- we all have different priorities.
