I play only on round thrones. I dislike the bike seat shape because it doesn't offer enough support for double bass playing. Here I explain a bit about why this is.

Totally saved me from spending for a bicycle seat. I have a round pearl roadster chair which I don't have issues at all, in fact the most sturdy and effective one I have ever used. The bicycle shaped ones I thought can make me more effective in playing double bass. But your point is right. Playing double pedals is not like riding a bike at all! Thank you!

Been playing drums for 13 years I'm 30 today. Using a biker shaped throne and for at least 3-4 years now and noticing I have back pain and less balance and less control. I get super tired in my legs just after 20 minutes which should be a warm up routine for me but my legs just give up after. I play a lot of double bass with speeds above 200 bpm. I noticed that only when I play slow 16th notes on tempos like 120-150 I struggle so much and I lose balance and control on my legs. My first thoughts were that I have a bad technique or that I'm not able to play anymore but upon looking to this video I hopefully found out what is causing my problem. THE BIKER/SADLE shaped drum throne. Just ordered a round shaped throne so hopefully this will help!

I'm figuring this out lately too. Been using a bicycle style Ahead Spinal Glide for a couple years and I'm realizing that while it is super comfortable and the whole spine gap thing is DEFINITELY something I want, the shape is totally wrong for me. The main issue is that with a bicycle style throne your balance depends on your legs a lot more, so playing certain things can be kind of awkward because you can't take weight totally off your legs without feeling like you're gonna fall forward. Thankfully there are some flat, round thrones out there with the spine gap in the middle. :)

On a serious note. I have used a well padded Tama round throne for 37 years, and no problem until now. I now use a larger drum kit. 26" bass drum, and larger deeper tom's. That being said. I sit a little higher than I normally used to. I'm only 5'7", and I sit at around 24" off the ground. My 12" deep snare (low profile stand) sit's right at my waist level. I don't do double bass drumming, but I feel I could use a Bike style seat with a back rest so I can chill while I'm Rocking Out. That being said. I'm 50+ years of age, and still ride a mountain bike every day. Practically everywhere I go. So the bike drum throne is right at home for me. The back rest is just for prestige for being a brigadier badass drummer who keeps on ROCKIN' no matter what.

I understand the appeal of bike seat thrones. The top complaint I have is you need to sit exactly in the right spot, or it's uncomfortable and requires you to make an adjustment. That's not ideal if you're playing, especially if the seat spins freely when you try to adjust your position. Round seats are more forgiving of seating position, and easier to move around on if you need a slight adjustment. They also suit a greater range of body types.

actually IMHO the bicycle seat makes perfect sense. No resistance on your legs to impede movement. I understand your thinking. But sitting down at a kit for a bit and wonder "why is this a thing" and actually owning one and using it for an extended period of time are two completely different things. And it very well could mean the difference between getting it and not.
@RyanAlexanderBloom
@RyanAlexanderBloom 6 жыл бұрын
PurplEDC Reviews good theory but I have one at the studio where I teach and it hasn’t convinced me. I sit on it for like 10 hours every week and have for many months and I would never trade. More movement isn’t helpful because the majority of playing happens from the knee down, not at the hip. Being balanced and stable is still more important in my opinion. It really seems to help my students play more effectively too as I’ve had dozens of people make breakthroughs when they sit back farther or switch to a round seat. Maybe not for everyone ever, but the round can help some people.

I think I saw another of your responses that discussed height and weight of the person. I am a bit heavier and have a spinal condition and I have a tama round right now and its killing me. Tractor seats seam to be the only thing that works for me. But I'm willing to admit I may be in the minority.

PurplEDC Reviews yeah that might make a difference because I’m only like 170lbs and most of my students have been smaller people or kids. If you have some spinal issue or you are larger maybe there is some reason that the other shape works better. I think the round is better for playing but if you have to prioritize your spine, then that’s pretty important.

The fact that you have to use your core to sit straight is actually beneficial. Sitting on the back of your seat lets you relax those muscles which results in more stress on the lower back. I think it's a bad advise.
@RyanAlexanderBloom
@RyanAlexanderBloom 6 жыл бұрын
I'm not advocating for not using core muscles. This is in addition to a solid core. I teach my students that if they cannot sit on the throne and lift both legs off the ground without wobbling or leaning back, they are not prepared to play double bass. Poor balance and core strength is one of the leading causes of double bass ineptitude. Not that my posture is perfect either, but your photo next to this post (I assume it is of you) looks pretty hunched over... just saying.
@woutervanwijk4369
@woutervanwijk4369 6 жыл бұрын
Ryan Alexander Bloom My posture isn't perfect also, but this pic is in the middle of a gig and just a captured moment. Besides, being 6.4ft isn't helping. However having to balance your upper body means you have a so called "active posture", meaning that you include smaller muscles in your back instead of your spine to stay balanced. That is why my teacher taught me to sit on the front of my throne, checking that I sit on the 2 bones by putting my hands under my butt. I admit that that is more than 24 years ago but then again, having a problematic lower back myself, I never experienced pain from playing drums. Actually more from carrying them around...lol Edit: I changed my profile picture to show the difference. It was taken at the same gig. 😉
@RyanAlexanderBloom
@RyanAlexanderBloom 6 жыл бұрын
wouter van wijk yeah no I mean my posture isn’t perfect either at 6’1” so I know what you mean. The problem with sitting forward on a throne is that you put unnecessary weight on your feet. If you’re using your feet for balance or weight support, regardless of throne shape, you can’t also be using them for pedal playing at a high level. Whether that be double bass or constant hihat work or what ever other pedal you want. So it’s quite a different thing from posture, it’s balance and weight distribution. Ideally you do both. Sitting in the front of the throne is a way to trick you into sitting up straighter but it’s ultimately also a hindrance.
@woutervanwijk4369
@woutervanwijk4369 6 жыл бұрын
Ryan Alexander Bloom Well if you're really sitting on those bones you're not leaning forward actually. I do play double bass (although I am not a speed monster) with heels off the ground. I guess it's also a preference thing. In my case I notice that when I sit on the back of the throne, my pelvis tends to tilt backwards, which results in the corner between legs and body isn't a corner anymore but a curve.
@paulysci925
@paulysci925 5 жыл бұрын
Agree all the support and balance comes from the sit bone and good posture. Literally every thing else creates a problem at some point later. Its a matter of biomechanics at work. I have a road bike and a bunch of seats where if it fits my sit bone it works best and the cushion doesnt matter and it's very similar for me. I can't play anything cushy or unstable for prolonged periods. Its like running in a big sloppy shoe.

The thing is, most of the motorcycle thrones are actually a lot bigger than the round thrones, and have more area to support your weight overall. I have a Tama Glide Rider and that thing is huge. I find the advantage is having all the support in the center groin area that extends out a lot farther than a round throne. The cutaways actually give you more freedom of movement for the thighs and legs.

Sticksbass I agree with you about the height. I’ve never noticed my circulation being impinged while playing but I do enjoy the stability that a round throne provides. The drum throne in the college where I rehearse has been replaced with a fairly lightweight keyboard bench recently. Rectangular seat and a small circular bass. Previous to this most drum thrones in that room were either broken or just impossible to adjust. I'm really enjoying the keyboard bench and am considering buying one for myself to replace my own cheap drum throne in the next few months. Just wondering if you've ever come across this or if you have any thoughts one way or the other. Just came across the channel and I'm finding it very useful. In the last few months I've been gigging more and more with cover bands around my city. Recently I've been experiencing some pain while playing (in my left wrist... very worrying and the first time in 10 years of playing i've felt anything) so your videos on ergonomics and set up have given me some real food for thought. Round Throne = Ankle shin and calve muscles motion / Bike Throne = Flat foot Hip Flexors motion that's about it, if you want to play like Derek roddy (hip flexors) bike throne leaves more area for your upper legs to go, wanna play like Lombardo ? Round throne is the thing to go as it involves way less work on your core, and lets your ankles play ..
@RyanAlexanderBloom
@RyanAlexanderBloom 5 жыл бұрын
I do not disagree with that, in principle. But quite honestly there are 2 things I'll say to slightly adjust your point 1) you should never pick a style of playing and throw out another. You should play from the ankle sometimes, the hip sometimes, and both sometimes. It all depends on the speed and dynamic level you are going for at that moment. 2) I play lots of full leg motion strokes, from the hip flexor, and a round throne has never caused me to suffer during that. I also play lots of ankle strokes and a bike throne has caused me to work much harder to achieve the correct position. So, for me the round is better overall because I don't pigeonhole myself into any given technique. If you only ever played full leg hip flexor type strokes, perhaps a bike throne would be ideal...

@@RyanAlexanderBloom I just can't use my calves for the down motion, shin for some reasons, i'am not too fast, but it certainly help me follow the pedal board while playing, naturally i never play heel up, or actually it sets me too much off balance, (i tried during a year to use more calve through endurance and one foot blast beat, and sure it goes faster but it left me with an elongation on the right calve) so it's Always flat foot even at the slowest tempos, it's harder for me to go faster, even more on round seats, but at least i can work more on my hip flexors and prevents me from élongations, plantar fascitis that i both experienced

@RyanAlexanderBloom 5 жыл бұрын
@@CultureShockGaming I'm not sure how plantar fasciitis is related, but I know its painful and if it inhibits your drumming thats bad. So, of course, do what you need to save yourself from that issue. I don't really understand what you mean by hip flexors when you also say you never play heel up. If your heel is down, nothing above the knee should matter. Heel down is the most isolated technique. You use your calf/shin and ankle and nothing else. So, I guess maybe our terminology is at odds and we aren't talking about the same things.Sorry for not understanding you correctly.

@@RyanAlexanderBloom What i mean by "heel up" is playing with my calves being constantly "contracted" (whole leg motion, center of pressure on the tip/ball of my foot, where you use both hips and calves mainly for basic rock drumming)!, i just never use that, i only use flat foot, which involes almost no use of the calves and shin muscles (only hip flexors).. If you are putting any sort of weight on your thigh, you're simply doing it wrong.

ozzmark You’re gonna have to explain your reasoning there, as I clearly disagree with that and I’ve never heard anyone assert that opinion before. So, if you’ve got a good rationale with physics and anatomy as to why that would be the case, I am very interested in it. The closest I’ve ever heard is another commenter who said he was of a huge stature and heavy build and his nerves got impinged by a round throne or something, but he wasn’t saying what you’re saying... I’m not going to say I’ll believe you straight out, but I really do want to hear why you think that.

Have tractor seat. It stays home. Pain to pack it. Use a round throne on the job.

...and you have a this skinny ass, hahaha....big boys (200+lbs) like me, need a mans seat, players with lower back issues, like me, need the cut away seat, less pressure for their sciatica problems. There are plenty of double bass players that use cut away thrones, I think the issue there is the style of playing, either 'heal to toe' or 'heal up', plus leg length, etc. I used round thrones for decades until my needs changed, you might as well. KEEP ROCKIN' BRO!!

Its not bicycle style, its motorcycle style seat and you dont pedal on a motorcycle.

Tinker Tanner motorcycles were originally bicycles with motors. The bike came first then it was translated into a bigger more specialized contraption. Regardless, the point of the shape is the same, roughly, to allow the legs to extend down below the seat and straddle around a vehicle that continues forward in between. Drummers need to extend forward before the knee bends. You sit at drums like you sit in a chair, you don’t straddle them to ride. That would be weird.

Mmmm is like to say that mangos are better than strawberries. I have both for different purposes. And don't forget that you can use the other side of a bicycle throne and use it as a rounded one!!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 ALWAYS BE CREATIVE AND FOLLOW YOUR OWN NEEDS.

I have used the back side of a bike shaped throne before. Usually not that comfy because it wasn’t intended for that direction. I’m not saying you can’t use the bike thrones but you’ll always be slightly less stable. You’ll trade comfort for it. If that’s a trade you’re ok with then that’s fine.
