We were watching a couple of vlogs back, when my wife (62) said they should cycle there, before you announced your plans. She cycled London to Greece on a Dawes Tourer but she was 21 and got a lift over the alps, she loved it and thinks you will too. She tied her jumper to the saddle and used that most of the way which she said was comfy. I'm sure your trip will be exciting. She used a map and had a transistor radio tied to the handlebars 😂

I think it's fantastic what you are doing, I wish when I was your age I had done the things I wanted to do. Unfortunately I didn't and now regret it. At the ripe old age of 62 my wife and I have taken the plunge and bought a house that needs a total renovation in a little village out in the country which has always been our dream. We also purchased a narrowboat which was always wish of mine 4 years ago and love our adventures so far. We are loving the challenge that the new house is bringing us and wish we had been able to do it years ago. So please enjoy your adventures and travels but take care and be safe and we wish you all the luck in the world. We cannot wait for the opportunity to "come along" with on your your adventures.

Glad you went through my novel of a list! I like that Topeak set, they really do cram everything into those! The way I was always taught to get your seat height, was to place a pedal straight down, put the heel of your foot on the pedal and your leg should be slightly bent when sat on the seat. That way you're not over extending your leg when you pedal. The bike bags Vs old bike box method is a difficult one, most would grab an old bike box from a bike shop and use that as it will give a bit more protection, but you would've both struggled with those and luggage without having a car to pick you up, so you probably did the right thing there, although I really wouldn't recommend those bags if you're sending anything worth over a grand as it will absolutely go missing along the way! Hope you're both enjoying it so far, i'm kinda envious that my destroyed knees won't allow me to cycle that far anymore or I'd be packing up a bike too!

I think it's worth repeating... A heavy bike doesn't ride the same. Do a test run fully loaded. Go easy on the daily mileage and avoid too many "big days". That Topeak kit is a good start, but bring spares, everything. But above all else, take your time, enjoy the trip, and have a blast!!!

Sometimes your approach is the best. You can over research things and end up not doing it as it all seems too difficult. Far better to buy what you can afford and learn what works and what doesn't. I'm a long term cyclist but haven't attempted anything like you've set out to do, chapeau to both of you. i bought a more expensive version bike bag of that same brand (Rhinowalk) and it didn't make it past it's first trip. The zipper broke in transit and the ass end of my bike was hanging out through the zipper when I found it in baggage claim. Luckily I'd zip tied everything (handlebars etc) to the bike and nothing was lost. I wish the bags were better! They were such a better solution than a box. Oh well.

Yeah ours might not see another trip we really struggled to fit our bikes in them at all (wheels poking out the bottom), they’re so light compared to anything else it’s a shame - we’ll probably get a cardboard box next time, bin it when we arrive and then hopefully find another one before we leave!

Should look at the trangia stove. All packs together and burner methylated spirit. It’s the best thing I own for camping/bike trips.

general rule I learned with saddle hight was that your leg should be extended when the pedal was at the bottom (many have the saddle way too low) and when you stop you get out of the saddle, not sit on the saddle.

"I don't want to topple off" as long as you keep the front wheel straight, it is literally impossible to topple over. Unless you hit something obviously. Bikes self correct balance as long as they are moving. It's why you can push them and they keep going until the bike slows down.

The seat/saddle should be at a height such that your leg and knee are just about straight when the peddle is all the way down (max distance). Hard to explain, but the knee sort of pops/flips/pivots to a lock position, which is about the correct spot. You get max power at that height. And since you are traveling far, max power is a concern. Yes, it can seem like it's too tall, but if it's not at that height, you will struggle going up hills. And... you should not be able to touch the ground while sitting on the seat if it's adjusted correctly.
