Bikepacking the Low Country day 2 of 3. Jay, Eddie, & Will take on the sand and swamp of the Palmetto Trail in the South Carolina Lowcountry.

Trail Start: Poinsett State Park
Trail End: Awendaw Passage Trail Head at the Buck Hall Recreation Area and Boat Landing
Distance: 150 miles
Bike packing rigs: Trek Farley [Eddie], RSD Mayor [Jay] & Breezer Repack [Will]
Day 2 Route Description //
The day started out with more tarmac, sand/gravel, & country road riding on the south side of Lake Marion.
As the sun rose, we rode under the canopy of several live oaks covered in Spanish moss.
Eventually, we cut back across a channel between lakes Marion and Moultrie to ride on the levee on the north side of Lake Moultrie around to our camp near the trail head for the Swamp Fox Passage.

Love those drone shots!! Eddie, can you show us how you piece together your trail route. I would’ve been more concerned about snakes than gators, they give me the hebe jeebees. Great trip as always

@@davejussel2607 YES! Snakes were a primary concern. Especially on day 1 when we were just past the "High Hills of Santee" and we were trailblazin'! I will surely put together a route planning video. I'm in the middle of planning our spring trip and that one is going to be complex -and will provide the opportunity to make a video on how it's done. - Eddie

LOL - we had 6 action cameras, a drone, and a DSLR. We ended up with way more shots than we used! I think we tried mounting cameras to every point on the bike... -Eddie

Fantastic set of videos for these sections of the Palmetto Trail. I'm planning on riding from the top of Lake Moultrie Passage to Awendaw in late October. Question: what was the name of the paid campsite at the end of this day? I'm assuming it's right before the Swamp Fox section, but I can't seem to find it. Thanks so much!

We rode the trail in early November. I was surprised at how warm it was and how many mosquitos we encountered after we passed through the train! - Eddie

I’m perplexed why the boat ride? Been looking at the Palmetto Trail a lot and not seen where that would be necessary?

The bridge across Lake Marion that parallels I-95 was converted to Palmetto trail - but was recently closed due to being unsafe. I'm not riding my bike on I-95. :) So, we got a fishing charter to take us across the lake. -Eddie

Was it the High Hills of Santee that put you behind? I keep reading that section should be skipped. I may follow the path set out on bikepacking.com.

Yes - High Hills of Santee was the tough part on day 1. Deep, churned up sand. Also - after Mill Creek Park, the trail dwindled and then disappeared next to a large clearcut. Those two problem areas likely set us back three hours. - Eddie
