38 at the front, 11-40 at the back? My legs got cramps just after listen to him. I really like his attitude. Weight is just secondary. Obviously no Pro Rider bike can weight much, but the obsession for the grams is pretty useless IMHO

Lets be real. He doesn't care about the weight because the Pros know they already get the lightest possible setup from their respective sponsors. In this case thats the lightest possible setup for a Bianchi hardtail with Shimano XTR Di2 components.

The chainring - cassette teeth combo is adequate IMHO. I've been in a lot of races. When a small incline comes along - like 2-5% I search for more powerful gears, while Pros pass me with 25 km/h uphill. When the terrain goes flat the speeds are 30 - 40 km/h.. , when it goes lightly down (so you can still pedal going down) speeds can be well over 40 km\h. It's impossible to spin at 40 km\h with anything less than a 38 in front. I mean.. it is possible, but not optimal. It all depends on the course. For the grams I agree.. but still he knows he's got the best gear, so probably around the best weight too.
