I work in the LP industry and run across this a lot! First off you need to supply liquid propane to a vaporizer (these utilize hot water from the coolant system if one is available) the reason for this is it supplies a ready supply of fuel independent of the ambient Temperatures as they affect the amount of pressure and BTU’s in the vapor form of LP. Next you have the pressure regulator to bring the freshly vaporized LP down to a set pressure so it stays consistent. Finally you need the correct LP carburetor for your size of motor. Call an outfit in Hampton Iowa called Midwest Meter. I can get you set up for far less than the cost of your generator 😅

Years ago we ran a friend's van on various gases including butane and propane, I modified an SU carburetor to meter the gas, did away with float chamber and fed the jet with butane (without a regulator) the jet was about 1/8" and we made a needle to suit, had to stretch the spring in the carb due to gas pressure trying to push the needle of the seat. It worked well, the van did quite a lot of miles like that, had to make a copper coil to wrap around the gas bottle to avoid icing. Was just an evening project, for a laugh, took a few hours to get it working properly.

What went wrong, is you are varying how much air was going into the carburetor, but the amount of fuel was consistent. That's why they have both the butterfly/slide and the needle. So basically it would only run at one rpm range where it had the best a/f ratio. To make it work proper, you'll need to find a way to regulate the fuel as well as air to get the best ratio, and to be able to control both of them with the throttle. Also, the LP needs to be evaporated/heated as it burns in a vaporized state. Great video though and I'd like to see a part 2!

Another thing is the "stratified charge" method. You just leave the throttle fully open, and a 1/16 ID tube as close as you can to the intake valve, brings the propane in. Then you control engine RPM with a "push valve" ( not a knob valve ) I've not tried this but it has been verified to work by a gent named Roy McAlister. He's a guru of NASCAR racing engines. This makes a sandwich of air + fuel layers, hence the name stratified charge. He has a patent on it, you can look it up.

I have a tiny propane powered generator. I rigged it to run on butane and found that the butane canister gets cold quickly and then doesn't vaporize. Butane turns liquid at about 32F. I use heat from the exhaust to keep the butane warm so it continues to vaporize. I'm pretty sure you kept shutting down because the butane bottle got too cold. Try using a hand warmer. You don't really show what regulator you used for the propane, but the typical regulator releases the gas at about 20 to 30 psi. That might not be enough pressure for what you' want. You can get an adjustable regulator with a gauge that will give you 60 psi. I've sen one that goes up to 100 psi (the tank is like 100 to 200 psi). The pressure regulator I've seen on at least one conversion kit (for a generator) gives you 0.5 psi. Butane's pressure is about 35 psi (fairly safe). Propane's is like 200 psi which is why you have to contain it in something with 1/8th inch steel walls.

You could probably use a regulator from a propane torch and experiment to find the right pressure, and also be careful with propane if you don't have a baffle system to prevent it from traveling up the line there is a chance it could do that, the carb helps stop it but LoL. I love old propane and kerosene forklifts and tractors. Butane is a dryer gas and probably puts a lot more carbon build up in your engine and thus eventually won't run off of it. Like kinda what happens if you hold it on something and just leave it there you will see a black residue built up where the flame was. Some lighters stop working after this build up too. I would love to see y'all get an older diesel bike or something similar and test many other different types of fuel.
@genns16794 жыл бұрын
Where i live cars are converted from gasoline to natural gas all the time, you need a zero flow regulator places right after the air filter, and good to go. Although for such a small engine you may need a much smaller regulator. If you are wondering why go through the trouble, natural gas is a fraction of the cost of gasoline.

Hey guys. The reason the bikes won't run is because the fuel is already atomized, but at a reduced volume. The propane systems have a regulator (like on the barbeque), the fuel atomizer, and usually a metering plate for the intake that is controlled by the throttle. I use to work on propane powered buses that were just converted from gasoline. The fuel/air ratio is out of balance because the intake volume does not flow at the same rate as the fuel and the volume of fuel is not being increased accordingly. Basically what happens is... At idle, the fuel is allowed to accumulate in the intake at a reasonable, but low level which will allow the bike (no matter the size engine) to start, but not accelerate. Both systems (propane/butane) need to be pressurized and regulated to their specific volatility. Remember that all fuels have a different volatility intensity ratio, which just means the some burn hotter than others. Gasoline has a certain volatility intensity ratio which is 14.7 to 1 fuel to air ratio under compression, the intensity changes as the octane value increases from 87 to 89 to 91 to 93, but all octane will burn the same with an open flame like a match. Propane and butane burn at lower intensity and both need a lower ratio of about 12 to 1 fuel to air mixture. That is the semi-science version. Basically all you need to do for the propane system is to have a standard pressure regulator from the tank, a hose feeding the fuel adapter module from the generator and reduce the airflow to match (the throttle controls the airflow). If you look at the generator, the propane components should be connected to the intake through a reduced port, not directly into the open intake. Unfortunately you will need a metering plate to regulate the mixture flow rate because the generator has a fixed rate rather than a modulating rate needed for a throttle type setup. The metering plate assembly basically replaces the carburetor. Yes, it can be done, just like converting to hydrogen fuel as well. It's all about getting the fuel to air mixture to match from idle all through the acceleration range. Good luck.

They ran better at first then progressively worse the fuel in the carb. was still emitting vapors which helped. The propane needs to be injected between the carb. and intake as well.

I'm not a mechanic, but as far as I know converting to LPG isn't that simple as LPG burns hotter than gasoline, so you run the risk of burning your valves and seats and the sparkplug. Most old LPG cars still need gasoline to cold start and get up to temperature gently, newer LPG-G3 systems do not have this issue. Then again LPG-G3 tends to be an injected fuel, which does require specialty injectors and an ECU flash in order to get the proper fuel air mixture. Old timey dry LPG systems can run on specialty carburetors, but like the one you took from the generator, it needs to be tuned to the specific engine. Newer wet LPG-G3 systems are less finicky on that end but they do still require quite a bit of modification to most engines in order to run it. Going through a cursory search with the relevant (local to me) government agency mostly shows wet direct injection systems. Old systems are most common on old-timers for tax reasons.

What's weird about Diesel and Hydrogen engines, and propane engines, is that you control the RPM's by controlling fuel flow only. You don't need an air valve on the throttle body. Gasoline only burns correctly between 11.5:1 and 18.0:1 air to fuel ratio. If you go richer or leaner than that, power goes way, way down. Hydrogen can be burned at only 4% concentration in the open air. So if you have a 1:25 ratio of hydrogen to air, or a 1:1 ratio of hydrogen to air, it will burn the same (in theory). Therefore, controlling the air flow with a throttle plate, is not necessary. This is how propane, and diesel engines work as well. There is no throttle plate, there is only a fuel control valve. More fuel = more RPM. To shut off a diesel, you have to cut fuel. Diesels that are worn out can begin running on their own engine oil from blow-by (look up scary videos of this happening).

@carlholm41163 жыл бұрын
I think the reason it didn't work is because you weren't getting the air fuel ratio right. The most challenging part is that the fuel has to be readjusted for every small change in throttle position. I hypothesize that if you took some time and slowly adjusted the throttle position on each of those bikes, you would stumble across a specific spot in the throttle where the bike engines run well for an extended period of time but if you change the throttle position very far from that spot it will bog out and die. If you wanted to actually make the bikes ride well on propane or butane, you will need to carefully measure the flow of air into the engine through the carbuerator throughout the entire rev range on the bike. From there you could look up the combustion stoicheometry (accounting for the fact that air is only 21% oxygen) for the fuel you are using and figure out a new fuel valving system that adjusts with the throttle to provide the right amount of fuel at any given throttle position.
@jonh12093 жыл бұрын
Are you utilizing the liquid from the propane or the vapor to power the engine? When upright your propane bottle will produce vapor at the valve, while holding the tank inverted should produce the much more volatile liquid propane. You could also try using map gas. It comes in yellow cans and burns brighter and at a higher temp. My final thought would be maybe a 5lb bottle in a basket on the handle bars and you would have flow control closer to the operating controls

What went wrong: proper fuel mixture, otherwise known as stoichiometric. This amount actually changes based on RPM and compression ratio, more RPM means more air, in which needs more fuel. Propane: since the propane was entering the system as a gas, as you revved up, you need to introduce more pressure from the tank. The pressure regulator does that for you, they are usually tuned to the CC and compression ratio of the engine. Ones from a generator usually only work in a small RPM range. Butane: this one worked better because the gas was discharged into liquid form, then sucked in through the engines compression. It's probably would have worked better if you had a larger tube for more fuel to be sucked in. You would still need to tune it to make sure the correct stoichiometric level. Good job you guys, just next time, discharge butane outdoors. God bless

It is common in Australia to find cars have a dual fuel petrol/LPG fuel system with a dash mounted switch to change from one fuel to another. LPG is currently half price of petrol so it makes a lot of sense to run on LPG as much as possible.

Yes ofc its economical. 1 petrol liter = 1.3 lpg liter. So its good. I have a mk5 1.6 petrol/lpg. Its going 300.000 km. And still strong

No, No, No, No. I owned KLR's back in the beginning. They where designed to run on Sterno. You took a couple of extra cans out in the filed and had a Fondue as you watched the sunset. If you used anything remotely combustible they would blow up................. :)

I ran out of gas once on a 1980s klr in front of a home store. Bought solvent and the motorcycle ran like nothing.

I really needed a good laugh this morning. Especially when coming from my Christian Brothers. My son is very sick right so please pray him. He's 11 and the best son any father could ever ask for. Literally a shinning light in a World of darkness. I know he'll get better and fortunately for us we have the means to get him the help he need. Thanks again.

The fuel metering is different, you need to control the amount of fuel and air.
