Thank you for a very good video! 🙏 It helped me a lot getting rid of the annoying creaking sound. Just needed greasing as I was bone dry. One thing: if you by any chance pull the free hub apart it’s pretty easy putting it together as long as the parts are not damaged. (For some reason one free hub flang was damaged so the cassette was stuck. I had to pull it with force which in turn pulled the free hub apart)

Thanks for this Vid. My Backwheel fell apart at the actual freewheel when I it was build out and eventually fell over on the Freewhee side. The Cassete with the microspline hub and a part of the freewheel and two secure rings had come loose. I didn,t know where to start to build it together again. This video helped. The real freewheel ratchet as you hold at 2:33 had come apart. One part was still in the hub, the other part in the Microspline part. It is normally hold together by 2 compressable metal rings you can actually see at 2.33. When you losen them you can take a look in the actual ratchetfreewheel. I can tell you, it is lubricated! With thin oil. When you will lubircate it with to thick lubrication like grease it will probably not grip again when pedaling. My rearwheel had also had a creek, I supppose it will be gone now.

Thanks for this video, guys! Mine is the XT hub. After a year or so it started making a "grinding" noise under pressure after riding uphill for awhile. I brought it to a dealer for service and they determined one of the inner plastic parts was broken. (Perhaps the yellow spacer mentioned below. No replacement part available, of course.) The dealer I bought the hub from replaced it with a new one thanks to Shimano's 2-year warranty. Of course, that also meant de-lacing and re-building the wheel, which is NOT covered. Now, after about 5 months with the new XT hub, it's starting to make the same grinding noise. My local dealer tightened the hub (which helped) but I suspect more problems down the road. It looks from this video that taking it apart and greasing is the way to go, but OMG! Though I do a fair amount of DIY service on my bike, I'd be REALLY hesitant to try this myself for fear of misaligning one part or another (or nearly forgetting one as happened in the video).

@@dlt1 I did NOT get a DT Swiss freehub. Still on the Shimano XT. I don't imagine the DT Swiss hub would fit inside the XT housing, since their inner workings are almost certainly different. I agree the grinding noise that the XT starts making if you don't regularly take it apart to grease it is annoying. My 2nd one is still functioning, at least, and my local dealer seems to be happy to replace it if it goes bad within its 2-year warranty. Nice tutorial.. I have a FH-M8110-B XT hub with the microspline freehub. I have been noticing a rattling sound when going over rough stuff. After inspecting I found out that the cassette can be moved with the freehub body really slightly in axial direction. I pulled of the cassette and the freehub body itself can be moved slighty. What could be the cause of that? It seems that on the freehub itself you cannot make any adjustments, right? I will pull the hub of and try to see whats wrong... When going fast and not pedaling the sound of the freehub stops when reaching a certain speed...
@pabloc1063 жыл бұрын
The movement that you mention in the casette can be a problem in the body itself, if thats the case shimano should replace the body or the entire hub. And for the noise is normal and is mean to be like that, at certain speed of spin the body doesn’t make any noise

@@BikeTeacher yes, as far as i can tell, it's the exact same model. I removed both the end cap and the seal with the metal spring. It was a bit dusty, but nothing serious. Last time it was disassembled about a year ago, the bike was in a service, so i don't know how they put it together. Since then i wasn't riding much in dirty conditions, not at all in mud, so i didn't bother taking it apart. (shameful, i know)
@BikeTeacher2 жыл бұрын
@ Are you performing regular maintenance or is there a significant problem? That’s a head scratcher, if stuck there may be a part that failed and is now jammed inside. You may need to get rough with it and jarr it loose. Keep in mind this may damage something further. You can also speak with Shimano directly.
2 жыл бұрын
@@BikeTeacher I'd call it just maintenance, but it started creaking a little a few days ago, so there might be a problem too. I'll ask about it in the local service, but one idea that came to my mind is putting the cassette back on, and giving it a few small hits from the non-drive side, with something i can put through the spokes symmetrically. Not too ideal to add impact on the thread, but certainly better than nothing. And yes, there's the official support. Thank you very much for your help, you're amazing!

@@BikeTeacher hmm, my comment got lost, rewriting it so i'm sorry if you get doubles So, i took it to a local bike shop, they couldn't get it off either. But got a great idea to pull the whole axle out, so that way i can reach the freehub mechanism. It worked, but of course the freehub is still stuck on the axle. Problem not solved just avoided. One thing that shocked me though, was that the little plastic spacer (Y3G111000) is almost fully worn out, barely any teeth left on it. What do you think, what's the purpose of that spacer? Once i heard it's just for noise reduction, but does it have a more important function? I mean, could i ride without it for a while, or would i risk damaging the hub? (i haven't find any spare ones in webshops, but there's a free 3d model available if you search for it (maybe the link made my previous comment disappear), i sent it to a 3d printing service. It could be a good solution if you or one of your viewers face the same problems)

Just for everyone watching this video, I do believe the intermittent noise is a feature, not a bug! The ratchet system works similar to the Chris King drive rings, except that Shimano’s can pull the ratchets almost completely apart, making for the intermittent sounds. If you watch the video, the two outer mechanisms that appear first in disassembly are what apply force to the ratchets, and the actual ratchet plates are inside that. Hope this helps anyone!
