Lyrics: (Bill) We were tunin' up to play a gig Just another one night stand I looked over my guitar And there stood an old man. His cowboy clothes were frayed and worn And his boots were far from new He said I'd like to sit in with your band I'm a country singer too. Well, we just had a big laugh And when I looked back at the old man There was a tear in his eye I told the band to cool it I didn't wanna see him cry. He reached down and he took my guitar With a determined look on his face But as he started to play and sing A look of sadness took it's place. He said I've sang my songs from Maine to California Seen the world through the window of a car I never saved a dime back when I made it I always thought someday I'd be a star. But now my voice is cracked and no one wants me My wife gave up on me years ago It's been so long my kids don't even know me Pickin' and singin' is the only life I know. And then he said, (Roy) I wonder if God likes country music Will there be a place up there to sing my songs Will he make my fingers nimble like they used to be So I can play the chords and sing along. (Bill) I just stood there, none of us really knew what to say He took my guitar and he put it down ever so gently And then as he started to turn and leave The band stood up and applauded And I can still hear his words today, he said (Roy) I wonder if God likes country music Will there be a place up there to sing my songs Will he make my fingers nimble like they used to be So I can play the chords and sing along..

@Bill Anderson NO! this is a trick to send me sad song lyrics to get me to start drinking, and drink myself to death, like you did to my father BTW: there is no way you are getting into Heaven for doing that, so you will never know if God likes country music or not I'm going to go through Dads stuff, and smash the rest of your records
@EXCELSIOR_INC3 жыл бұрын
@Bill Anderson Never a fan Bill, I see you have a 84th birthday coming up Nov1, You will be able to answer my question, any day now, if you were good and get into Heaven? I used your records as frisbees smashing them against the 2 room shack I grew up in as a kid with my 9 siblings Because, you are responsible for my Dad being a drunk from listening to your sad songs, that's why I smashed them The song Po Folks comes to mind, and really made Dad drink and cry like a baby, Spending all his money on booze, and also to replace all your records I smashed

It makes you wonder. Songs like this where the older performer- and it could be anyone- sings Roy's part and you have to wonder how they feel about singing something that really strikes so close to home.By this time, Mr. Acuff had practically stopped playing and singing because he just wasn't as able as he used to be. You have to wonder how he felt about that- and acknowledging it this way.

My wife and myself went to a matinee at the Opry in August of 1990. The highlight of the show Roy Acuff and Minnie Pearl. After Minnie Pearl finished her part of the show she got a standing ovation. She stood at the end of the stage and waved to the audience and looked like she wiped a tear from her eye. I always wonder if she knew some of these people would never see her on stage again. The next year she had a stoke that finished her performing.Mr. Acuff died a couple years after.

@Bill Anderson I was born in the mid 1960’s (after “Still” came out). My dad always listened to country & that’s what I grew up on. I have a biography book & cassette tape (yes I still have a cassette tape player - Lol) from Bill Anderson. In the 1980’s (forget exactly what year) I seen Bill Anderson in a outdoor festival concert in Millersport Ohio at the Millersport Sweet Corn Festival on Saturday (the last day before Labor Day every year they would have someone from the Grand Ol’ Opry). I’ve always loved Bill Anderson music & I’m in my late 50’s now

Please let me know how we can communicate again or if you want my cell phone number I can do that to but I’ll delete it when you tell me you have it. Have a magnificent day sir and may God continue to Bless you

@Bill Anderson yes sir I’m here. One of my favorite songs & I learned it from you. (Fiddle playing intro) I love those bright lights and country music I won’t stay home and cry tonight like all the nights before I just learned that I don’t really need you anymore I found a little place downtown where guys like me can go and they’ve got bright lights and country music Bright lights and country music a bottle and a glass soon I’ll be forgetting that there ever was a past and when everybody asks me what helped me forget so fast I’ll say Bright lights and country music Fiddle and Steel Guitar intro A table by the bandstand a bottle filled with wine honky Tonks were made for men with women on their minds nothing else can take away this loneliness of mine quite like bright lights and country music Bright lights and country music a bottle and a glass soon I’ll be forgetting that there ever was a past and when everybody asks me what help me forget so fast I’ll say Bright lights and country music. I love those Bright Lights and Country Music There are other songs of yours (like Wild weekend, Still, Tips of my fingers, Cold Hard Facts of Life [Porter Wagoner Version- cause I’ve never heard your version], City Lights (Ray Price Version [cause once again I’ve never heard your version] { and I know you wrote it about Commerce Georgia when you lived there a short time and worked radio, I live in Winder which is about a 30-45 minute drive from Commerce Georgia - coincidence?? Maybe lol} and other songs that I love also and I karaoke sing while going down the road in my truck cause I’m a over the road truck driver and it keeps me occupied passes the time.
