I had the honor of growing up at Giants Stadium and every single home game of Taylor's entire career I was there. I have never seen anything like him before or after and doubt I will ever see it again. I got used to focusing on him for just about every defensive play because you just didn't want to miss what he was doing to opposing offensives. The way he moved people out of the way, including through the double teams was hard to believe. I used to look at the QB and you could see they would be turning their heads to see where he was lining up. Almost like they were in fear......Man it was incredible. And Giant fans will remember (cause we sat 4th row section 139 end zone) when offenses were near the end zone in between plays he would turn to us and tell us to get up and go nuts. And we did!! Memories I will never forget.

Yeah all this talk of his beastly strength and speed is not the whole story. I see that point. I see intelligence that gave him the platform to terrorise the opposition, like for example, he knows what he’s doing when he drives the man back to the point he can cut in and take the QB at ninety degrees to the line of scrimmage. The blocker loses track of how far back he’s getting driven then he cuts straight in and the QB thinks “oh shit, how did he get there and come at me from that angle”, then he uses strength and speed to get over any cover there and get the sack, that’s brains not just brute force. He looks like the way he plays disrupts the opposition, like the Larry Bird of football. You can’t stop him. By the way, I freely admit that I really don’t know much about what we call “American” football as I’m British, but I do think I can spot a sportsman who has intelligence in his play.

So, the things I remember about watching LT as a Giants fan...? Once he squared his body to the ball holder, that ball holder would be down and collapsed within one yard of his tackle. As a New Yorker I am somewhat biased. However, I believe it is justified. As a kid I watched Willie Lanier of The Kansas City Chiefs and thought he was the best and modelled my game after him. I admired Butkis and Nitscke but they were just a notch in time before I was watching the game seriously. Lawrence Taylor came along and completely rewrote the way Defense was played. I have to say that the men he played with on Defense were every bit as scary as he was. Carson, Banks, Reasons, Martin, Marshall, Burt. Are you kiddin me? Every one of them Assassins in their own right. They put more Quarterbacks out than the League would care to admit. ( see Theisman, Montana, Jaworski etc....) They were a no nonsense bunch all business "knock your dick in the dirt" crew. Period. They were merely reflective of their Coaches...attitudes "The TWO Bills". Its a Wrap.

@chris klein Exactly RIGHT. They used to have to EARN EVERY YARD. NOW THE REFEREES are too far in the mix in determining the Outcome of Contests for my liking. Parcells....."instructed" Belichek (as HIS Defensive Coordinator with The Giants) to DISRUPT the Receivers from the Line of Scrimmage and beyond (most notably EVEN AWAY FROM THE BALL) so that they would ALWAYS BE MORE CONCERNED about getting "Hit" than catching the ball. It proved to be a Highly Effective Strategy but as it turns out lead to too many "low scoring games" which The League found troublesome "for Entertainment Purposes". They wanted Higher Scoring. The result is NOW you cant even TOUCH Quarterbacks OR Receivers and THAT along with the "Kickers" faux paux decides the outcomes of games. (In my opinion)

Great LT Story (relating to what Schlereth said) - People use to wonder how LT could anticipate plays so well. LT said, I would watch the linemen when they break the huddle. the one that would look at me, I knew he was the one assigned to block me; (C, LG, RG meant run play).

I have been a Giants fan since Taylor played, over 30 years. I'm sure he is the greatest defensive player ever. I wouldn't say player overall. Best defensive player and best offensive player is probably the best way to look at it He destroyed offenses. Like an Avenger. His superpower was offensive destruction

I've been watching the NFL since the late 60's and am a diehard Washington Redskins fan and without question Lawrence Taylor #56 was the greatest defensive football player of any generation that I've seen!!! No body stopped him from doing anything he wanted and if you won the game you still had a great respect and fear of #56... You kind of felt sorry for the poor tackle he faced that day, because deep down you knew he'd be destroyed...

So true… And I’ll never forget the night that he tackled Joe Thiesmann. He immediately leapt up I motioning to the trainers from Washington to get over. He knew right away that and Joe was in excruciating pain after the hit. That showed me that as intimidating and ferocious he was a player, he was concerned about the men as people behind the facemask.

I'd feel more sorry for the quarterbacks and running backs. LT would get a step to accelerate against a lineman, but against QBs or RBs, he'd have several, maybe more and he'd hit them with more velocity differential and therefore more force. It's no coincidence that Joe Theismann suffered a compound fracture of his leg (ended his career) after getting crushed by LT.
