Well Lawrence Taylor would get into peoples heads. That was part of his strategy, in fact what he said to Eric after the game solidifies that. His first step and first 5 steps were way faster than any other linebacker I can think of.

The thing that always blew my mind about LT was that not just the utter and complete domination of other NFL players (the best players in the world at their sport, the upper echelon of athletes on the planet, some of the hardest working, most dedicated guys around), but the fact that he really didn't work out. Never lifted weights or any of that. He just showed up and killed people week after week. Off the charts with physical gifts coupled with unbeliebable tenacity, competitive drive, and murderous intent. I mean, Bo Jackson was probably the guy on the other side of the ball with the greatest athletic gifts, but at least he'd work out to develop them. LT? Nah...none of that.

I just made the same analogy to Bo Jackson and I see you’d already done the same. However, Bo didn’t really work a great deal at any sport as he played football, baseball & ran track and never spent an off-season prepping for either sport as he was busy competing in the other 2. Bo was a naturally gifted freak.

I'm about the same. Almost 50 and also grew up in NY watching LT. In an effort to create content, commentary, or whatever...people always try to break down to the lowest possible granule "the best left outside LB to come from a school in the mountain time zone..." just so they can give some kudos. But there is no additional descriptor necessary with him. LT is THE greatest Defensive Player ever, no matter the position. End of conversation. And in my opinion...nobody else is really even close.

@@johnmartin9894 you are posting my exact thoughts. I have posted the same. Guys who have only seen highlights but never saw Taylor play entire games/seasons will never appreciate how great Taylor was. Any great LB/DE can make a highlight reel. LT was more than that, LT took over games and shut down teams. Run, Pass rush, pass coverage. Dude was completely dominant in all aspects of the game even on special teams. I bet if they put an 80 number on him he would have been an all pro TE.

I could be wrong, but I don't think anyone had any idea of just how dominate LT would be at the next level. I remember watching him the first 2-3 seasons of his career and he was must see tv. Defenders before him; Ray Nitschke, Dick Butkus, "Night Train", "The Deacon", Jack Lambert, "Mean Joe" Green and basically the Steelers entire defense and the criminally insane Raiders defense 😂 plus the scariest defense ever in the Bears for which he played in the same era with, but LT came along when the league was primetime all the time. He was as mean and nasty as all of these dudes put together plus the best athletic on the field regardless of position on any given Sunday. LT was the first defender I ever saw consistently chase a play from the opposite side of the field. Players like Eric Dickerson, Walter Payton, Barry Sanders all hall of famers and two of which rushed for over 2,000 and Walter Payton ran for over 3,000 yards. Walter Payton, "the only man who could turn a 6 yard loss into something spectacular!" 😂He not only out ran his teammates, he had the juice to finish the play with ferocity and the Giants had a top notch defense without LT. Best LT line, "son ya'll gonna have to do better than this!"

Wow! A funny story. I was in the 4th grade when Dickerson joined the Rams, but I already knew who LT was (living in the DC area…the old NFC East). LT was like the Giant that ate everything in his path. I didn’t realize at the time that Eric Dickerson was actually BIGGER than LT, but it definitely didn’t matter…especially not to Dickerson!!! That’s some serious intimidation when a guy the size and with the athleticism of Eric Dickerson is goin’, “I can’t block no Lawrence Taylor!!!” Seriously, LT is THE most dominant player I’ve seen in my lifetime. No one else is close (and that includes a whole lot of EXCEPTIONAL defenders). He was the one defender in my lifetime who caused opposed teams to build their whole offensive strategy around neutralizing HIM…because he could dictate the ENTIRE ebb and flow of the game BY HIMSELF!

In ‘96 my son was on Foothills 9th-grade football team (Pleasanton, Ca) and the coaches were Joe & Mike Madden. His best friend was Mike DiMaggio (great nephew of Joe). I happened to be home for a few days so the boys, their friends, and I went to a park to play and have a little fun. After we returned home we watched highlights of LT - how he moved, how he positioned himself and his raw, predator-type talent. Those boys went undefeated that year and part of the success was by emulating Lawrence Taylor! I was in Rio and visiting with a guy at the Sheraton and told him they had just gone undefeated - he said John Madden and Pat Summerall had commented about it on their Monday Night Football broadcast - I wish I could see that broadcast. We lost our son in 2002 - I miss him terribly - a very good young man and he got his defensive moves from LT (Thank you, Mr. Taylor). (And “thank you” Mrs. Madden for sponsoring their celebration party - I wish I could have been there)!

It still blows me away the Los Angeles Rams trading Eric Dickerson. I never understood that. When they played in the 1989 NFC championship Dickerson was their missing peace I truly believe they would’ve gone to the Super Bowl.

Well, he definitely would've helped, but nobody was beating the 49ers (17-2) that year. That was a bad ass crew. Defeated MIN 41-13, LAR 30-3, and DEN 55-10.

Mark rypien once said hed get nervous when they(redskins) had to play the giants.hed get sick to his stomach with anxiety. He said LT once told him hed rip his head off and that he was dead man. LT struck fear in his opponents and he backed it up nearly every play.

Yes L.T. was that fast, that strong, that hungry, and yea he was that much more scary and intimidating for good reason!!! Look what he did to Joe Theisman by accident, even though L.T. wasn't trying to hurt him. Football is war more civilized than fighting with guns and bombs, but a war/battle none the less played on the gridiron aka battlefield!!!

The closet player at that position to LT was probably Gregg Lloyd. When I say the "closet," I mean a far distance from the other OLBs, but not even close to LT......

Dickerson had a knack for getting the free linebacker to take himself out of the play just before Dickerson would cut through the hole. Nothing fancy, no extreme jukes or truckings, just lure the tackler to the wrong spot and hit the hole with great acceleration. His highlight reels might be as impressive as Earl Campbells or Barry Sanders but his consistent production was better than both of them.
