In the book The Big Sort, Journalist Bill Bishop and Robert Cushing found that while America may be more diverse than ever, the places where we live are becoming more crowded with people who live, think and vote alike. Bishop draws upon recent data to discuss how we have built a country where we can all choose the neighborhood, church and news show most compatible with our lifestyle and beliefs, and describes the possible consequences of this way-of-life segregation.

Why only focus on the costs of segregated life? surely everyone wouldn't be doing it if it weren't for the benefits. I think that most of us would like to assume our neighbors share our values. Diversity may be a strategic advantage in a certain way, but if it's outweighed by the benefits of social cohesion, we don't need it, and shouldn't value it so highly.

Please show evidence that these benefits exist.

guysovereign It seems like the largest benefits go to liberals, intelligent people tend to prefer to flock to liberal cities where the economy thrives while conservative rural areas are emptying out and withering.

@@ubuu7 Not completely accurate. You're forgetting very economically-dynamic exurbs, suburbs, and mid-size/small metros which favor republicans particularly of the middle-class variety.

Clearly whatever benefits "social cohesion" brings are not worth it.

"Lifestyle segregation" may lead to more tension nationally, but I think this is counterweighed by it leading to less tension locally. It would lead to even less tension nationally if more prerogatives were devolved to states and cities and keep the federal government out of most things, that way liberals can have their policies and conservatives theirs.

The talk was interesting (agree with most of it); the Q&A was lame.
