Bill you know that the "problematic" dialogue is what made the movie so good. This and Trading Places is my favorite Eddie Murphy movies and I couldn't see anyone else playing Nick Nolte's character. My wife loves the "high hard one" line.

@@phenomenal-xv4ey They couldn't and wouldn't make it today. It's funny because it was made in a different time. I loved this movie, but if it came out today, I'd be pissed at Nick Nolte's character, and the man himself. I wouldn't be able to see the comedy aspect b/c the same things that were funny back then aren't funny today. On one hand, people are way too sensitive about some things. On the other hand, it's great that we've become more enlightened and we can more readily see how things we do and say can negatively impact others, so it's not necessary to indulge in.

Best was when the chief parodied his character in Arnold's "Last Action Hero" (as well as parodying basically every "stupid chief" trope that had been in countless action movies by then). The part where he's screaming nonsense/gibberish at Arnold and smoke is coming out of his ears got plenty of rewinds in our living room when I was growing up and I still howl when I watch it to this day. Though to me he'll always be the big quiet guy with the heart of gold that fixes one of the baby alien spaceships in "Batteries Not Included".

As a person that saw it at the movies on the first day it premiered, I can assure you than not a single Black person was offended by Nick Nolte. We appreciated the honesty of his depiction of the character. We were ferociously excited that Eddie Murphy was in a Motion Picture. A major event. But see, back then, even if anyone did have an issue, how would they express it? There wasn't an internet. A social media that let everybody sound off, giving the impression that what they have to say is important. An anonymous way to gang up and choose to not rock with an awesome movie out of some kind of righteousness. Back then, if you shouted out, nobody heard it. You had to write a letter to the editor of the newspaper. That was the max level of demonstrating your concern about anything. Unless you offended someone to their face, you'd never know. Nobody was really brave enough to do that in the early 80's. Heck, in 1986 we all Held Hands Across America to demonstrate our unity as a nation.
@Musicvidsetc

As I recall Eddie Murphy throws some racist stuff back at Nolte a few times. Was I as a white kid at the time offended? No way. If anything, we loved Eddie even more after this underrated film. Since I was one, I can tell you that Gen X white kids in the 80's worshiped Eddie and he's still beloved today.

Well said sir. It was the 80,$ . As you mentioned there was no platform for everyone to vent every fart of a freakin thought. I’m white ,I’m racist to anyone that pisses me off ..so that’s everyone lol. …. I act like a complete ignorant idiot. I don’t however hate someone for their ethnicity . I think it’s in human DNA to get defensive at someone that’s not like them and treat them like crap. ( no excuses no apologies ) just how I see it. I’m not gonna lie. Anyone that says they are not or have never been in some form or fashion racist at some time in their life are full of it. I Grew up playing pool in a dirty garage with my best friend listening to Eddie’s tapes from Delirious to Raw to Richard Priors stand ups to Red Fox and many more until we could go word for word on Eddie’s stand up. To me and my best friend the two whitest kids in blue collar America we thought there was nobody smarter and nobody cooler than Eddie Murphy and all those that came before him. Eddie has a special place in my heart and I feel as if he was an older brother teaching me things that mom n dad prolly were not going to lol. Thanks for all the gut wrenching tear crying laughs Eddie ! You are truly the peoples Champ.

Quintessential gritty 80's. 48 Hours and Life are my two Eddie Murphy favorites. 48 Hours would not stand a chance today. I think they got away with it is because it wasn't too one-sided. Reggie wasn't a punk and he was talking shit too. Then he went toe-to-toe with Cates. Don't like the sequel as much but it's still entertaining. Eddie Murphy's "Bad day" speech is classic, and so is the look on his face when he shoots the big dude in the foot. 😂

It's important to note that the racist dialogue coming from Nolte's character was typical of that film/TV archetype - not of your average person walking around the US at the time. A lot of those movies had at least one cop whose job it was to say racist things and/or beat suspects, etc. That doesn't mean it was the societal norm. They tamped it down a bit in NYPD Blue's first few seasons but still had that character in Sipowicz. It just so happened that the show was on so long that the character was actually allowed to have an arc.
