Interestingly: this almost caused Bill Burr to abandon his comedy career. By the end of this show he had essentially won over the audience by standing up to them. The next couple shows crowds - hoping to be part of such a magical moment (again) started heckling Bill repeatedly, in an effort to get him to bust into another rant. Bill, basically, had had enough and told close friends that he was done with stand up. Until they explained to him that the rant in Philly was such a lightning in a bottle moment, that fans were trying to make it happen again, and that the heckling was actually affectionate - not malicious. If you didn't have any background on this, know the the Philly crowd (and Jersey) are notorious for heckling, booing for no reason, willingness to actually fight or throw shit like bottles on stage (I know they didn't allow bottles for a while), and being a tough crowd in general. This bit was in at least four parts; Tracy Morgon, Bill Burr, Bob Saget, and the guy who went first (IDK). The first guy got booed and heckled, en masse, the the whole start of the bit until he got fed up and ranted/broke down. So, when Bill gets up there he just digs into them. He didn't even know that he got a standing ovation, or that the cheers were as loud as the boos at the end. Bob Saget tried to tell him, but until he saw the tape he didn't believe it.

Hey guys. Philly is known for tough fans. They had a Hall of Fame 3rd baseman for many years named Mike Schmitt, considered the best in the game at his position during his career, Every time he struck out or made an error his hometown fans booed him. Once during an Eagles football game Santa Claus made an appearance on the sideline. The fans booed him and threw snowballs at him. There was a fairly small group of drunks near the stage that kept booing Bill here. The vast majority of the crowd was cheering. He got a standing ovation at the end. Bill talks about race and racism a lot as well. He is married to a black woman. She is on his podcast often and they are hysterical together. He also created an animated show (I think on Netflix) called F is for family. He is the voice of the dad. Stay safe and well.

Ok, mates, so here's the story as far as I know it: It was a tour called the Opie and Anthony Show, they had done a series of gigs with comedians like Dom irerra, tracy jordan, Bob saget and Patrice O'Neal. Now this show had... I think followed a sporting event by the sounds of it, and offered little transition time between it and the comedy show. So there were a LOT of.... just HAMMERED bellends who wouldn't sod off. A couple comics went on, 1 just tanked and Philadelphia was his home town. A couple other comics got this weird sensation that they knew it was going to be a bad crowd and a bad show. Tracy jordan packed up about halfway through his like... 15 minute set. Now Philadelphia is known for being a tough gig, but this crowd started with a few booers and just went downhill from there. There was a brief intermission where a couple of comics did really well, but then the people booing came back for another round. To add fuel to this fire bill had a couple of jokes not doing well and one that was used as part of an ad for the show he was unaware of so the crowd had heard it already and just tore into him. But Bill knew his sports and the area hosting the gig was on the edge of Philadelphia, new York and new Jersey (lots of rival sports teams, try to imagine 9 premier league teams living within 16 kilometers of each other). Bill hammered philly and won the neighboring state crowds which is why you hear laughs and cheers mixed in with the booing

American venues don't sell glass bottled drinks because they used to get launched at sports teams, comedians, etc. No getting "bottled" here unless you save your water bottle with something in it.

He was really smart with this. The event took place in an area just outside of Philadelphia where there is a bit of a one sided rivalry, so he could tear into Philly with chancing them rushing the stage. Genius.

Bob Saget gave a fairly clear minded recount of this evening. Burr is legend.

This became a love-hate laugh show... Everybody had fun! Hear the applause in the end... They fucking loved it!
