Well I'm from the good ole South (SC) and I laughed really hard with this show. Cosby wasn't making fun of her, that's how people are back in the woods. Notice how she was unshakable even austere! She did great and later proved to be quite intelligent too.

Bill would get lynched if he visited that town in South Carolina in the 1950's and 1960's. Things did improve SLIGHTLY in the 1970's - but not by much. The lynchings stopped - Blacks were just mildly beaten up instead. A few punches and a few kicks were given to some Blacks who were out late wandering the streets after the bars closed. I visited south Carolina in the 1970's. It was like the wild west as soon as the bars closed.
