Spring is Here lyrics by Lorenz Hart: .
"Spring is here! Why doesn't my heart go dancing?
Spring is here! Why isn't the waltz entrancing?
No desire, no ambition leads me
Maybe it's because nobody needs me
Spring is here! Why doesn't the breeze delight me?
Stars appear, why doesn't the night invite me?
Maybe it's because nobody loves me
Spring is here I hear".

Your breakdown and analysis of Bill Evans' version of "Spring is Here" is so well thought out and well done, as is your playing of it. I have now watched your video twice through so far and learning and practicing. Much thanks Mr. Hewitt, for taking the time to prepare for and present this well done excellent video. Kent, you’re truly an amazing teacher. A gift to jazz and the piano as a sublime instrument-gateway to the soul. I’ve probably watched this video 5 times (and so many others as well)…I’m thinking of the diminished ‘Cosmic’ from a bit back if I remember correctly. Solar too. And so many others. Your time and gifts are so appreciated. Your fellow compatriot from afar. If you have the Chance or interest, check out a book ‘The Paper Canoe’ from a theatre guru genius guy called Eugenio Barber. He talks in the intro of an art without borders, a ‘Land-Less country… and country which consists of Time not Territory.’ Anyways. I’m glad I finally mustered the strength and courage to send this note here to you and the Jazz ranch. Proudly, I’ve turned many others and fellow students of my own onto your talents and teachings . Regards, Conor

Of the many fascinating things about Bill, when watching him play I get entranced by the obvious technique and natural flow of his hands. His sound was calculated in every subtle way, yet so very free. His mindset about music is deeply philosophical. As always, interesting video Kent!
@KentHewittpiano88
@KentHewittpiano88 4 жыл бұрын
You said it just right, Isaiah, everything about his playing is perfection, but his sense of dynamics is what makes me feel his emotions and essence the most. But you are right about the fact that there is a very natural flow of his hands and his mind set is deeply philosophical. There's no way i can explain that about him, I can explain it about me, but I don't have that kind of insight into a genius's mind. I wish I did.

Kent, what a wonderful person you are to share so much knowledge. I have been playing for a while now, self taught ear player and can't read. I do understand chordal theory but I'm still weak with inversions. I really appreciate your explanation of those 2 hybrid chords. I love Bill Evans, he is my favorite inspiration...Can I please please get some advice from you? I feel like I'm stuck. I try to learn songs, but have trouble remembering them, and I also still have very poor improvisation skills. I think the key for me is using chord tones because I can't imagine thinking in terms of scales when playing. I don't have a clue how to weave a solo from chord to chord and make it flow and sound like something. I feel like learning an entire Bill Evans ( like this one) from start to finish, with full understanding of the chords and solos may be the way to go, but I'm not sure about this... What should I do to improve and move to a higher level? I wish you gave lessons :( Thanks, Thomas

Kent!!! Wow!!! I couldn't agree with you more about the genius of Evan's harmonic sense. This is such a masterpiece of expression of the unrequited love the song is intended to express. The tensions and unexpected releases. ~~~~~ The power of spring's attractions: blossoms and scents, freshly formed beauty and radiant colors allures with the haunting of siren melodic calls that demands desires be fulfilled. Yet amongst the many diverse allures one may find that apparent devices of fertile love was not a guarantee of a perfect match. Some only find a lonely walk through a promising paradise. Some only taste the salt of their own tears. Jambo

I've been listening to this tune forever, too, and have been trying to work out an arrangement of it and wondering what the heck Bill is doing. I've been feeling very down today, I'm a piano teacher who misses her students so much, teaching them all through a computer screen is so hard. I was just showing this tune today to an adult student. This is great, I can't wait to hit the piano tomorrow and work on this. You inspired me out of this funk. Thank you.

You've shed so much light on the beautifully mysterious playing and style Bill Evans Kent and not in a way that will unmask an art form with underlying false pretenses but one that reveals the absolute brilliance of it. I endeavor to be a better player and will pour over this and your other videos and at some point buy a hard copy of your book when money permits. Thank you for your genius as a player and teacher Kent.

I loved this lesson. Thanks for these videos, I already learned so much from them. Bill Evans uses the melodic minor scale over a lot of different chords. If you have a minor 2-5-1 to C minor. You can use F melodic minor over Dm7b5.(Locrian natural 2) And the Ab melodic minor over G altered (Or over Db for a Mixolydian #11 sound, the secondary dominant) And then over C minMaj with a natural 6. This makes a lot of sense to me now because of all the lessons I learned from you. Also I found a cool exercise to lean these voicings in all the melodic minor scales. Start in F melodic minor. Play 7th chords up the scale: FminMaj7-Gmin7-Abmaj7#5, then turn it into AbminMaj7 and start over...AbminMaj7-Bbmin7-CbMaj7#5, then BminMaj7-C#min7-DMaj7#5 etc.. This moves up in minor thirds so when you come back around to F, you can start from Gb and then G for example. I'm looking forward to practicing this and the next lesson!

Thanks for visiting with us before your great teaching. Appreciate the stories and background. I consider “musicology” to be part of my education as well. Another favorite Bill Evans album of mine is You Must Believe In Spring. A favorite cut there is The Peacocks. Do you have any peacocks there at the jazz ranch?

Awesome tutorial! Thanks, Kent! Yes, I am a Bill Evans fan, though I don’t often understand the theory behind what he is playing. Your explanation has removed some of that mystery. More please! Working from home full time, I’ve had more opportunity to practice, and I’m currently putting in 1-2 hours each day. You’ve given me some chord progression ideas to play around with. I’ve been wanting to compose and arrange again, maybe I’ll create something from these ideas. :)

Apart from being funny and of course very dashing in the mask, you are immensely generous to share this level of stuff; after all these years I can play most of what I hear but Bill Evans ... it's like Debussy, beautiful but you're in space; you save me many hours of searching and all explained without pretention. My total respects and stay well.
