The bassist kept the swing going the whole solo! Fantastic musicians. The Bill Evans Trio was a gift to art and to the world.

Evans was an absolute genius. Like Sinatra in his era, he invented a style of using the half notes to make you anticipate the completion of the satisfaction once it came. Evans was a master at using silence to enhance the melody. There was no one else ever like him. Heroin cut his life way too short.

That was the best Bass playing I've ever seen in my life Jesus christ, I play bass i don't understand how he got his hands to even remotely move like that. He truly is a master.

Some people live with their bass. Mine leans against the corner most of the time, next to the piano (they like to be together). Ah, well, I realized long ago that not all bass players are created equal and I've learned to live with it and just enjoy the true masters of bass.

@@GeometryDashDyno Maybe; some are pretty cool and some are more intense. Back in 1960 a sax player in our college dance band was playing the bass. I was surprised that a sax player played better than I played. "Where did you learn to play bass?" I said and he replied, "My dad taught me. Bass is my primary instrument." I learned so much from that moment. That sax/bass player has made his living playing and teaching music his whole life. When my son was 21 I took him to hear the sax/bass man and his trio play . . . and now, some 40+ years later, my son is a music teacher.

So, I'm a mediocre musician and a psychologist, but I can tell from this video that Bill Evans was high on heroin at that time, while recording this live take of Autumn Leaves. Just look at how carelessly he's playing, look at his left hand; also listen to the unusual technical mistakes he makes in the beginning. Look at his somewhat desperate expression while playing. And still, he's able to render one of the best Autumn Leaves version ever. That says it all, I guess. (Also thanks to extraordinaire musicians such as Eddie Gomez).
@JHillMD
@JHillMD Жыл бұрын
Bill was reportedly off heroin during this 1966 Oslo concert. He and Elaine stopped using heroin in 1963, and Bill returned to heroin in 1973 (and later methadone) after Elaine committed suicide upon learning of Bill’s affair with Nennette Zazzara, whom he later married.

Don't know what you mean by never "got," but maybe you just didn't like Eddie Gomez. Whatever, he did himself more than many times proud following in Scott LaFaro's legacy (which, he has admitted, made him very nervous). His 11-year tenure with Evans was the longest musical association BIll ever had. Eddie swung like crazy, took fabulous solos, engaged in great musical conversations with Evans & the drummers rather than be a mere timekeeper. I met him personally in 1977, and he told me he felt as much at home in the upper register as he did in the lower end. His passion and musical integrity were, and always will be, beyond question. I personally LOVE HIS PLAYING ! ! !
