gates is heavily invested in monsanto and the like. gates is a fake he is a major polluter and resources consumer himself. his house is as big as a battleship -uses 500,000 board feet of lumber. he is just out to make more money for himself not serve the public. it would be allright if in the process his investments serve the public but energy wise and pollution wise they won't as the answer to pollution and energy use is to stop consumption of most goods, & products not increase energy production itself. that involves social action not innovation. gates and microsoft were considerd highly non creative by computer insiders as all microsoft did was issue different versions of not very good not very different overpriced software year after year. microsoft was a vicious and monopolistic company that sued and threatened lawsuits against any competitor. they tied their browser to their operating system so they could monopolize the browser market and were sued by the government for doing it.

There's nothing wrong with clean energy, but let it become cheap and economically viable by its own innovation, rather than forcing it on people by taxing existing sources of energy which are vastly cheaper and more efficient. I'm sure the work that Bill Gates is doing will help this process and I have no doubt that clean energy will be the norm in the not too distant future, but there is nothing wrong with fossil fuels, they've been good enough to take us from the agrarian age to the superb standard of living we enjoy today. No modern luxury would be possible without petroleum. Show me a militant opponent of the oil industry, and I'll show you someone who has no idea how awesome their life is because of petroleum.
@Mkoivuka8 жыл бұрын
Great thoughts, only problem is that it's not exactly fair. We are already subsidizing these industries with tax money, so money invested to move to clean energy is not new money, it's existing money that is already being spent, being spent differently.
@mindfulsentinel80868 жыл бұрын
Fast Frets there are tradeoffs with everything. Yes, petroleum have provided us with the ability to do more work. However, it has also contributed a great deal of environmental, ethical, and moral hazard. You sound educated so I am sure that you remember the history of leaded gasoline, which was eventually made unleaded by law. The industry fought very hard to keep lead from being replaced as an additive, even though company execs were exposing themselves and their own children with lead oxides. Let's not even begin to discuss the first gulf war, which was literally fought over gasoline drilling, using the military as an industrial externality, and to some degree the perpetual wars we have fought thereafter.

the really big money.... hedge fund money, Silicon Valley financing.... stuff like that. the Fed's conjured up money is just barely enough to cover the crowding out of finance through the normal banking channels because of rising entitlements (Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security). but we really do need private fundings... for breakthroughs... because in 2015 thru 2016 we went past a "tipping point"..... not in Climate.... in the consensus amoung our scientists and political leadership. it's real obvious. in the 2016 runup the whole Climate thing was severely toned down. it only came up a few times because otherwise it would have been way too obvious. there are still remnants of the old "Climate debate"... in the same way that if the DPRK was disbanded there would still be some folks running around.... literally for years... upset of even still crying over the absence of Kim Jung Un. believe me. India is a big place and very very poor. It cannot be denied air conditioning, cars, aviation.... let alone most westerners. the Climate is so serious that without India... and even if we stop what we are doing.. we can't stop a "mindblowing" mapping of effects, as Bill Gates put it a few weeks ago and Donald J. Trump knows all too well. his appointments have no meaning. the US government has $20 trillion in public debt just as the Baby Boomer entitlement spending is taking off. it is already crowding out capital investment in the normal banking/public market mechanism. only venture money and private funding... can mitigate the mapping of emissions to effects.
@stevenstoffers46697 жыл бұрын
listen to Gates at about 44 minutes into the Caltech thing.... it's the end all and be all on Climate.. after hearing the word "mindblowing" from Bill Gates himself, a very cool cookie when it comes to Climate... you can set the whole climate thing to the side.. unless you are under age 40 or so.

It took us 50 years to figure out fission and making it safer, less expensive, and more reliable. Fusion is tougher because it's more complex and only works in small reactors in university settings currently. It takes more energy to start the reaction than it outputs, so until they do more research to develop the technology, it won't become available for commercial use.
@skipcercelletta66597 жыл бұрын
saferrrrr, right. like TMI, FUKUSHIMA NUKE DISASTER, CHERNOBYL??? at which safer do you infer?

I think fusion could be made safe, but once the way has been found it could probably also be used to make bombs though.
@ProfessorNogginify7 жыл бұрын
Fusion, if made energy positive, is intrinsically very safe. There are no radioactive components. Additionally, there all already fusion bombs: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thermonuclear_weapon.

Fusion if we could ever get it to work & that's unlikely, would only produce electricity, it would produce NONE of the raw materials we now get from fossil resources & those raw materials have become essential for our existence. I suspect that fusion will forever be 10 years in the future just as it has been for decades now.

The big issue is that the rate of energy production using alternative energy sources will never keep up with the demands of an exponentially growing world population. Many of these 'energy' companies know this but they are most happy to drain any investment money that comes their way. Meanwhile the 'consumer' pays taxes to governments that waste money on alternative energy schemes and suffers continual price increases on energy bills. Part of the solution must be energy waste minimization and ensuring all consumer products operate at a low notional power level. This includes motor vehicles and industry, which use a high proportion of energy.

We have a generation of "Can't dos" who cannot see potential technical solutions to current engineering problems. According to them, nothing is possible beyond what we already have. Just take a tour of space related You tube vids and one can find moon landing deniers, even space flight deniers. Not to mention flat earthers who are "Can't do" types by virtue of the fact they seem to think we somehow had the science to do the things we've done since Biblical times and yet, we cannot figure out the shape of the Earth. FErs tend to be moon landing/spaceflight deniers so they do not accept any space imagery. So it's no surprise to me that we cannot get past big oil as our energy solution. We should have initiated some sort of program to phase out fossil fuels at the end of the 1970s! No wonder many folks do not see the US as a world leader anymore.
@EastwardTraveller8 жыл бұрын
I agree with most everything you've said but I also think it's dangerous to tackle problems with a mindset that EVERYTHING has an "engineering solution". We're decimating the ecological foundations of life on this planet. Engineering alone won't be able to accommodate nature to a world economy that's basically doubling every 35 years. We have to reduce our footprint somehow, and it will have to come in part by behavioural changes on our part. If we rely solely on engineering solutions we're basically waging a war on nature itself and we might see an eventual end to nature.
@tomsherman23508 жыл бұрын
i know we need a depression said and published that view in the paper over 40 years ago. call it negative growth.
@EastwardTraveller8 жыл бұрын
Tom Sherman I don't know if you're being sarcastic or not but yes, a managed de-growth of the global economy. The scope of trade and cooperation between nations should increase but the scale should decrease. We have it within our means to increase our technological progress and standard of living for everyone while also reducing our ecological footprint. But it's never going to happen...

Lower You Electric Bill With Old As Mother Earth Technology I, Have So Can Everyone "Can Do"
@ljdean19568 жыл бұрын
Kurt Coleman: I agree with what your saying and I should have clarified engineering solution a little better. The main argument for me is the "Can't does" who advocate Moon/space hoaxes and flat Earth advocacy. That is, they do not accept Apollo was possible. Some do not even accept satellites! And flat earth advocates do not accept a spherical Earth, preferring instead to believe humanity only advanced to Biblical times when it comes to Earths shape but accepts most other engineering because they have no choice since it's right in their face. To underscore your point on reliance solely on engineering solutions that could screw up the planet. I'm not an advocate of terraforming another planet because as I've often said, were already doing that with Earth and we don't know what the results of that little experiment are going to be but it does not look good.

There's no such thing. Show us a "successful" capitalism without a class of wretchedly poor people and a Nanny State that ignores them to bail out corporations and investors, subsidize them, give them tax breaks, remove any limitations are their rapacious and callous behaviour.... among other things. Every investor made his cash off the backs of hard workers doing hard work, there is no other source of wealth... a billionaire is a person who can use and dispose of millions of dollars without blinking, because he knows that a million dollars is the equivalent of 44 years of hard work in this country, and only much longer in many others. That actual people have to endure this injustice does not matter one bit, "capitalism" requires a surplus army of disposable, desperate workers in order for it to "work" and create billions for a few...
