The only difference was DLR never said they were best friends. They were meant to bring out the absolute best from each other. AVH said the same. Sammy created an alternate reality that didn't exist. Mike was Sammy's dude. The brothers stuck with each other until recording time. It's so evident. 1996 was rushed and 2004 was a money grab. That was a huge FU to Sammy on that one. RIP EVH. ❤😢❤

Over and over he kept saying ".... you better be wearing a cup!" In that same press round, Guitar Player magazine interviewed him and kept repeating that as well. Letters to the editor the following month were hilarious. "Imagine how let down I was to pick up the latest issue with the greatest guitar player on Earth and there's nothing about gear, technique, or influences. Just him running around kicking people in the balls..." I was crying laughing.

As soon as I heard Ed say that, I knew he was lying. R.I.P. Eddie, my idol, legendary icon. I still miss him and can't believe he is gone. However, he was a bit of a liar when he had to pick a side. I've seen countless Roth interviews and videos, etc. I can't see him saying that "tonight is all about me". That's way too convenient of a slam. It's easy to say he had an ego, but he was a lead singer. Eddie had a massive ego. The humble routine was partially an act. Al had an ego. Mike had an ego. They all took a solo EVERY night! Their opportunity to show off, all ego. The drumsets, the guitars, the clothes, the Jack Daniel's bass, Mike's hot sauces......they all have massive egos, and I am absolutely OK with that. But the finger pointing at Roth, who pushed that band to greatness. The guy who had to work the audience in the clubs. He designed their sets, their marketing, etc. If anyone was allowed to have an ego, it's him. If not for him, they play Sabbath and Cactus and get few gigs. But one thing I noticed was that on the surface, it was easy to say Roth had an ego, but he was ALWAYS about the band. He was super protective of the band. It was Eddie who kept doing nonstop solo and collaboration projects. Roth never wanted the band to break up, and wrote a movie with the intent that VH would do the sound track. But would he ever actually say "Fuk your hip, tonight's all about me"? Nah....that sounds like something someone would say to make people dislike that person and feel bad for them. VH used Roth by letting him feel that they were getting back together so they could help sell the Greatest Hits album. I mean hell, they wrote and produced 2 new killer songs. Of course Roth would think they were getting back together. 2 new songs? Announcing his return on MTV awards? Yeah, I'd be pissed too. Read his book, his version seems honest and detailed. He even said the same thing about talking about the hip. Because he's right. Some things you keep to yourself. And on a night meant for fans, the last thing you want to do is make yourself look old and broken down while hoping they buy tickets to see you. Again, Roth protecting the group. It's a business as well, and it makes sense. The fact he mentions it in his book tells me he felt no guilt and the rest of his description was probably accurate.
@MickeyWattsDeadHead
@MickeyWattsDeadHead 8 ай бұрын
@@Rob-dp3vr good post, and agree with your sentiments. Roth takes a lot of abuse for the very same things that made Roth who he is, and Van Halen is. It was so disingenuous for them to act like bringing him back meant he had to be someone Ed approves of and controls, versus bringing back the flamboyant guy who escalated Ed from being just another Vai, Satriani, Malmsteen…brilliant guitarists, but nothing more, and nobody of any historic significance or relevance.

The interview that you're referring to two subjects in the same interview with (Kurt Loder MTV) When Eddie was asked why Sammy Hagar left or quit, Edward states, "Sammy's work ethic sucks. If he wanted to be here, he would be here right now." Edward states, "come on Sammy, you cannot lie about what took place." He went on to say that Sammy stated he was a solo artist before joining Van Halen and he wanted to go back to being a solo artist. Sammy response was, "he got a phone on Father's Day" and Edward said, since Sammy didn't want to record and have anything to do with the Greatest Hits album, they went and got Roth and it is working out. Inferring that he was fired by Edward Van Halen. The interviewer (Kurt Loder) turns to the subject of what took place at the (MTV AWARDS SHOW) when Van Halen appeared for the first time with David Lee Roth on stage. That is when Edward goes into how David Lee Roth was acting goofy, bizarre, and disrespectful to Beck. Edward goes on about what took place when they were at the post press conference, and announces that he needs to get his hip replaced, all of the sudden David Lee Roth gets quiet, and refuses to answer any questions. So instead of Roth coming up to Edward and saying, "hey maybe you shouldn't mention your hip." Roth replies, "tonight is about me, not your fucking hip." That is when all hell came breaking loose. Van Halen with Roth had already recorded two songs for the Greatest Hits Volume One, and the Warren Bros. wanted to create two videos. They only did one with "Me wise magic", a great song. Kurt Loder concludes the interview asking the Van Halen brothers did you promise David Lee Roth was back in the band? Edward and Alex are talking over each other saying it was "baby-steps." Alex does tend to echo the words spoken by Edward, which is funny.

The way Ed and Al expressed themselves in that interview I`n not sure if I`m more embarrassed by or sorry for them, especially knowing Eddie`s problems with health and substance abuse. The brothers sounded like some very bitter person after a divorce. But I kinda like how Hader finds the humour in this.

Yeah, it seemed like Eddie was shocked an egotistical attention hog was stealing his thunder when he wanted everyone to feel sorry for him that night. "Hey, tonight was supposed to be about my hip surgery!" It's Roth, of course he was thrilled to get the press looking at him for the first time in years.

@MichaelTheroff-fn1kx he didn't want anyone to feel sorry for him. The journalists in attendance immediately started asking when they were gonna tour, and Eddie simply told him nothing was planned because he had to have surgery. Roth's a fucking dick.

For about 15 years before that 1996 MTV interview I always thought DLR was the problem in VH --- the press convinced me of it --- but after watching that interview and how they talked about Dave and Sammy --- I suddenly realized Eddie and Alex were the problem, and always were

Alex and Eddie often slipped into Dutch language when they didn’t want people to know what they were saying.

@kerzytibok3211 And the English language is full of Dutch slander that we still use today. "Going Dutch" "Dutch courage" "Dutch whore" "The wooden shoes" etc. You gotta understand the history between two countries before you race go baiting.

The best part was when Ed said, like the 5'7" 137 pound dude he was, "I said 'you ever do that to me again, you better be wearing a cup' " Which, beyond the hilariousness of him thinking he be tough for saying and Dave mopping the floor with his ass if he tried that. That sounded like what Valerie definately said to him many times.
