Bill kinda exemplifies a much more realistic hope and future for carnivores. Whereas legoshi has this violent and sudden rejection of all things carnivore and gives into (at times) rampant idealism, bill is kinda a more natural and gradual evolution of what a good carnivore can be in the beastars society. He eats meat, sure, but literally every carnivore does at some point and few characters other than legoshi see it as totally unacceptable. For a lot of carnivores, it’s not something they do a TON, like bill says he only goes there once a month. Combine that with the fact that the back alley market (with some bad exceptions) is SUPPOSED to only sell “ethically sourced” meat from funeral homes and hospitals and bill and other carnivores like him really aren’t hurting anyone by doing what they’re doing. Additionally, it says a lot about bill that he chose rabbit BLOOD specifically to dope with. Of all the parts of an herbivore you could consume, blood is the one that is the safest for the herbivore. It’s just blood, requiring the herbivore to just have some extracted like at a blood drive. The herbivore would be totally fine afterwards, it wouldn’t be some debilitating thing like chopping off a finger. That’s also why I don’t think bill is a bad person for doing what he did. He’s engaging in consuming herbivores like most carnivores in the beastars society but it’s still very clear that he only does it as often as he needs to and for special occasions. He only decided to dope due to how important the play was to him, it was not like this would be a common thing for him in other plays with less of a societal message. And he does change slowly over time. The experience with the shock egg served to show him how fragile and precious life was and also gave him a new perspective on things he previously only saw as food. It made him appreciate to sanctity of life a lot more and was his first real test against resisting his urge to prey on and kill a live animal, since up to this point he had only ever consumed parts of an animal that were already dead or would not have killed the herbivore to take and eat. His evolution as a leader changed from this too. He stopped trying to change societies view of carnivores all on his own and actually began trusting in his fellow carnivore friends and herbivore friends in the drama club to all work together to change that perception. Before we saw him in August, it was a very “us vs them” and even “me vs all herbivores” kind of mentality for how he would make his mark but also after his conversation with Els, he realizes that there are herbivores who also don’t want to see carnivores be treated badly, they don’t like how herbivores will be generalizing about carnivores either and avoiding getting to know the real them. In conclusion, bill is a deceptively upstanding guy based on his first antagonistic role. But we quickly see, that he’s striving for the same thing as Louis and legoshi, just in his own way. He’s no worse than any other carnivore for visiting the back alley market and he doesn’t make a big deal about it or go more often than he really needs to. He goes from well meaning but a bit egotistical and selfish, to a true leader once he realizes that he has herbivore friends that care about him too and that also don’t want to see the school get jaded and prejudiced against carnivores either.

The main reason I ship Bill and Els so hard (other than extrovert x introvert / tol x smol) is because even if they don't get any real focus outside of that one scene of Els yelling at him, if you look for it there's a lot of small instances in the background that just show how Bill is always first to make sure Els is okay, making sure she's not scared or hurt, and reassuring her when he can. And seeing how Els goes from being terrified of large carnivores (like her running from Legosi in the beginning) to seeming much more comfortable around them, especially Bill, talking with him lots, loaning him manga, and she always seems to be near him whenever things go bad (like during the black out at the meteor festival) Maybe I'm reading too much into it, but to me there's a lot of potential for it as a really cute ship

The big thing with Bill is that he clearly cares for people around him and doesn't instinctively hurt anybody. Sure he liked flexing his strength with Legosi and wanted to eat the old man's finger, but would only do that with consent. I think his strongest distinction so far has been between seeing meat and seeing people, and his firm understanding of which was which.

For me, honestly, Bill is one of the best characters of Beastars. Not only he is pretty consistant through out the entire manga (to which not even our two protagonist can brag about), his arc needed no filler, didn't need exclusive chapters to only explain some random stuff or make time, neither It was in the way of the main plot. Probably the best arc, the best subplot and probably one of the best secondary characters. When you think about It, Bill's arc is the only time Beastars really dealed with real coexitance, and was the only character who made a real action against discrimination: not letting people be ignorant. Because, for the most part, when you think about It, Beastars world suffers a lot of ignorance, and said ignorance is what fuels the discrimination and segregation. And, it's sad how Louis and Legosi make little to now progress un that regard. There has Teo cam two terciary characters to make a real change and the plot just leaves them behind. I hope we some day get a manga of just Aoba, Bill and Pina. I would definitly read that.

the comment bill makes to legoshi hit me close to home for a very close reason, in that the reason i can recognize that a rabbit flailing on their own is a sign that they ARE dead, not that they aren't, is from having seen it before. i knew someone who was an animal abuser. and the scene and the sound of the scream burnt itself into my mind forever. you ever hear a rabbit vocalize before? it's haunting. you'll never hear anything more nightmare inducing. the scream sounds exactly like a human infant. i have never been able to tell the difference between a living human and a dead one. that person i knew is why the same cannot be said about animals, especially rabbits. that person is, fortunately, no longer breathing. he moved on to goats and angered the wrong farmer. he deserved worse

I know that the whole "Tactical fursona" thing was dropped once Paru managed to remove Keisuke from her studio, but I like to imagine Legoshi's would have kept evolving over time. It'd be a stripped jakalope since >Deer's antlers >Rabbit form >stripes from bill I think these are the three that really formed the basis of who legoshi is today with how they helped shape his morals. Bill really was one of the elements that helped make Legoshi more social than before, even if it was started by legoshi trying to kick bill's ass on stage. Remember, up to that point legoshi was deep in the shadows, preferring to avoid conflict whenever possible. Bill helped show legoshi something that would become relevant for the rest of the series; you have to fight for what you believe in.

Oh boy. Completely off-topic, but I feel you on the lead role thing. My school had an opera planned for right after spring break and for the first time ever I was gonna have multiple solos (I wasn't a main character, the opera was actually half a play, so some singing was cut out for dialogue. I was the singing voice of one of the actors who only did the speaking parts, so we sort of split the part). I had been getting vocal training for years and finally got over most of my stage-fright... and then literally 5 days before the opera was to start, the pandemic closed everything. The theater kids ended up doing a zoom performance of the opera, but as a straight play instead, so since I was only the vocal talent (and part of the vocal orchestra), I was not in it anymore. What was extra depressing was that the composer of this opera was gonna come to our show since we were apparently only the third group to attempt it; this pandemic has ruined a lot of things. But back to the video, this was really cool to see. Bill was a character I despised at first because I thought he was just a bully, but then more of his personality and good side started to show, so he's really grown on me.
