If you could get an episode project file and it's dependencies and assets you must set the facial animations to 300%-500% and the body animations to 0% (I am aware it is tracked but all the percentage does is exaggerating the tracking data or the opposite.

That motion capture picture, where the guy stands on the table, was posted after season 2 had been announcened and, if I remember correctly, had them ask if people could guess what the project was. I am pretty sure myself that that is from the recording to season 2, mainly because that is what they are working on right now, but also due to the posture the guy is having looking a lot like the way Legoshi's posture is too.

Seconded. Multiple times throughout the video I thought: "wow, Studio Orange used an unconventional but smart approach here." This covered various aspects that I would never have considered. Kind of a pity that despite all that love people still largely resent any shortcomings compared to 2D animation, without seeing all the effort and unique values. Also I kept wondering how OP just figured all of that out as he casually rummaged through the net, haha.

Just wanted to point out something about the voice acting: having the voice actors record before the animation is actually the standard for most of the world(doesn't matter if its 2D or 3D). Japan is one of the few places that do it after. I definitely agree that them doing it before for this helped with the overall story, though.

In 2D animation it's more common to record the audio first. Then the animation can be tailored to the feeling of the voice. It's only really crappy or cheap animation that records after (or dubs, which is a different story.)

As Victoria said, that is more popular with western animation, in which the dialogue and audio is pre-scored, but in Japanese animation, usually the animation is done first with the audio followed afterwards.

It's honestly really impressive how they have handled the CGI with regards to Beastars and Houseki No Kuni, a lot of people seem to think 3D animation is easier than 2D animation but that is simply not true, both styles of animation are equally difficult in their own ways, 3D animation requires not just just artistic skills but technical troubleshooting skills as well, creating a character model designed to be animated is already hard enough, a process that requires skin weights painting, retopology, to UV maping and much more, and thats not even mentioning the actual animating, it's why people normally do this kind of stuff in large teams to spread the insane workload.

If you have characters moving on 2's but the background is moving on 1's you get chatter because the character would be moving back and forth on the screen. The two solutions are: animate the character at the same rate as the camera movement, OR continue the character's forward motion on every frame even if the character's pose doesn't advance, to prevent its arcs of motion turning into zig-zags caused by the camera movement. Yeah it makes sense to choose the latter option because you want the way the character moves to stay consistent.

Whats interesting about the animators acting out the scenes is that DreamWorks animators also do this (I know for sure they acted out scenes for How To Train Your Dragon) They mainly used this to map out scenes, get a good idea of perspectives and scale of characters. (So some where out there, there might be an almost completly acted out version of httyd) I think it actually give a organic, smooth feel to the animation.

I just learned of Beastars a couple of days ago and something I really like is the motion capture. And how they had to study anatomy of the animals to make realistic facial expressions or something. I love attention to detail.

Beastars is such a stunning anime to watch, the quality of the animation is so good. The issue I have with a lot of anime is how stiff the movements usually are, so one of the things I really love about Beastars is how expressive and detailed the movement is. All the subtle shifts just make it so real

This anime is incredible, I hate it when people say stuff like: "eww, why make an anime with furries???" Like bro there has been so much effort made into the anime and u act like this... :V

Technically they aren't furries, the are just humanoid animals.

I work with motion capture software and it’s truly an awesome tool to work with. Smooths out the workflow and provides some super smooth motion, and beastars definitely shows that. The methods they use to imitate a hand drawn style are ingenuous too.

Wow, great profile on the creation process. This video was quite a unique experience. It had the light-heartedness of a personal review - the kind that talks to a viewer already familiar with the series, or at least the genre. Yet it brought up information about the studio's creation process like a good documentary, sparking curiosity and awe for the craft. And considering it was a personal research, you went quite deep into it - all while still delivering all of the information in a very casual way with some of your own thoughts and humor. Finally, I appreciate that you put the links and attribution in the video description :)

So thanks for the research and for putting it all together in this great video! I'm personally a huge fan of good animation and it was fascinating for me to see how Beastars was made! :D
