I'm only 37 but man let me tell you! This man is what I aspired to be like as a young gearhead! I had a bunch of old Hot Rod magazines from my uncle and Grumpy was in a whole bunch of them. I was amazed how he could pump 600 horses out of a naturally aspirated small block back in those days!! STILL amazes me. Long live the legendary Bill "Grumpy" Jenkins!!! 🙏💪 (edited for grammer lol)

Whether you were a Chevy fan, Mopar man, or Ford guy, there is no denying that guys like Bill Jenkins, Don Nicholson, and Sox & Martin were the personalities that made Pro Stock drag racing so much fun and exciting. I have very fond memories of these guys as well as others that competed fiercely in the Pro Stock ranks. It is not the same today, as corporate drag racing has taken over eliminating the little guys. Gone are the gassers, altereds, and super stocks that were always crowd pleasers as well as match racing. A damn shame!

I never got to meet him, but William Tyler "Da Grump" Jenkins was my hero. When my nephew was just a few years old, I taught him to say Bill Jenkins, and now I'm doing the same with his own 2 1/2 year old son. I purchased a '73 Vega because of the Grumpy's Toy Vega that Bill Jenkins campaigned, and I kept it for 26 years. Rest In Peace Grumpy, your contributions to the sport of drag racing will never be forgotten.

I saw Grumpy for the 1st time in the summer of 72 at Englishtown NJ; he and that smoking little 327 ci smoked the big blocks of Eddie Shartman, Bobby Yowell and I was hooked on the Grump. He was running 9.5 seconds in the 1/4 mile at 145 mph. with the 100 lbs / C I he blew those big blocks away. I was a Grumpy fan from that day on!!! RIP my friend.

Nicely done. Thank you for posting this. A few years ago in the pits at Rte 66, I was waiting in line with other fans to get an autograph from Mr. Jenkins. When I got to the front of the line I didn't ask for an autograph.... I told him I would just like to shake his hand. I thanked him for all the years of happiness he brought to so many. Rest in peace Bill Jenkins.

I'm glad they showed one of Bill's Plymouth's going down the track. Most people didn't know he started out racing Mopar's before he went on to become "Mr. Chevrolet". RIP Grump!
