It's 1963, but Russell looks like a modern player. Not only he protects the boards and the rim, but switches onto guards easily, has excellent footwork on defence and can catch a board and run the break like a point guard. His instincts are perfect, his movement spot on. Put 1963 Russell in a time machine, give him two months to train and get every perk that players of today get and he would be All-NBA. Impressive player.

The only people that don't respect this era are those that grew up drinking Gatorade and standing in line at 3am to spend their rent money on the latest 'J's'. NIKE's marketing development brainwashed several generations that have no idea how the game is actually supposed to be played. Russell has done something that will NEVER be exceeded in my lifetime. He was the anchor of a dynasty that won 11 titles in his 13 years. Boston NEVER won before he got there. They didn't win again until he was retired 5 years. Folk can make all the excuses they want... that's the fact.

It's almost certain that he and Wilt both did. Hell, Russell damn near did it in this game. Russell was a fine passer and had two triple doubles in the finals. You know he was probably in double figures in blocks too, so there you have it. Wilt was in a class by himself though. Blocked shots were recorded unofficially in only 112 of his 1205 lifetime games, but we still have documentation of three quadruple doubles. 24 points, 32 rebounds, 13 assists, and 12 blocks in the playoffs in 1967 against the Celtics. 10 points, 38 rebounds, 10 assists, and 10 blocks in the playoffs against the San Francisco Warriors, also in the 67 playoffs. And 12 points, 26 rebounds, 11 assists, and 12 blocks in the 1970 playoffs against the Suns. There were probably quite a few more than that.

Willie Gordon Dwight Howard isn't a top tier NBA center anymore. His game hasn't really translated to the modern era, and injuries have slowed him down. Gobert, Cousins, Drummond, Horford, Porzingis, and Embiid are the leading NBA centers.

Cousins, KAT, and Embiid are the only ones that are clearly better (though Cousins and Embiid turn the ball over way too much). Horford is tough to quantify. He's can hit the open shot consistently and is a terrific passer, but he's nowhere near Howard's production individually and gets a lot of credit because the Celtics are an elite team. I've never been a fan of Howard's. He sulks and pouts, thinks he's a much better offensive player than he actually is, and has never worked particularly hard to improve his major weaknesses (his free throw shooting, his lack of reliable post moves, his decision making out of the post, and his inability to hit a midrange jumper). But I'll give him credit this year. He's played well and certainly hasn't been the reason Charlotte isn't in the playoffs.

Celtics back then were the ultimate team. Each player had a role to fill and they all worked together without their own egos getting in the way of winning. They had a certain amount of freedom as long as what they did was within the framework of their roles and they won. Bill Russell filled his role excellently and he did everything to help them win. Whatever they needed from him he gave and for that he was rewarded with the most championships of anyone. A tremendous player and leader. And a human being who demanded respect and got it for the most part. And someone who didn't put up with any disrespect. An honest, forthright caring human being. A legend. Someone to admire and look up to both on and off the court.

I loved Pro Basketball before the onslaught of the 3 point shot. EVERY offense now is the same-4 guys on the perimeter with one guy inside the arc. No imagination. Watching this video the Celtics use a split the post offense to great success. Fastbreak and good shooting made the game exciting along with ingenuity. Today's game is boring IMO.

Peter Li Those players worked second jobs, fixed their own injuries, etc. Just to keep playing the game they loved. They played because they had H-E-A-R-T. Today’s players don’t have the tiniest iota of love for the game that these players did. They do it for another reason that also happens to be a five letter word, but is very different: M-O-N-E-Y. Today’s players focus more on being athletic than having fundamentals. More teams = more diluted league, period. Imagine basketball today if there were still 10 teams and every player had to prove year after year that they were too good to take off of the roster. That’s what it was like for the players in the 60’s and prior. Appreciate that!

Peter Li None of the teams were bad. Their competition was insane. They had to play every stacked team against them more times per year than the modern NBA. Imagine having to play against an 8-11 HoF Celtic team (excluding Red Auerbach), or the ‘67 76ers for example. Before you say that the teams back then had bad records, remember that these were the kinds of teams that they had to play against so often. Imagine how other team’s records would’ve looked in the 80’s if they had to play the Lakers, or Celtics 13 times each season before playoffs.

Vingthor13 actually bill was leaner so he didn’t have to bend his knees all the way down to block shots like wilt did. Players learned how to time shots over wilt for example Sam Jones would always say “too late “ or “sorry wilt” every time he’d hit a shot over him which one game caused Wilt to chase him and Sam Jones went to grab a stool and everyone broke it up

What kind of a goofy ass move is that by Bob Cousy @5:45? He has an open 10 footer or so as he is driving down the left side of the court. He has and uncontested 10 footer and instead of pulling up for the jump shot, he decides to go with a left handed hook shot as he is driving toward the basket. And of course he decides to go with the bank shot while he's at it. That's strange stuff.

With the way the rules were back then - the way they played defense makes sense. It wasn't until hand checking was banned, ball handling was loosened up, and charges were ignored that it really became such a nonstop effort of footwork. Good footwork of course still applied back then, but they had more defensive options, and the offensive players had fewer offensive options so it wasn't so critical.

I agree. I never said our era was stronger. I think the 1980's and 1990's were the strongest decades defensively-speaking. The 1960's and 2010's are both incredibly weak eras in terms of defense.

Depends on what you call defense honestly. A lot of guys confuse a bunch of hand waving and movement with great defense. Russell was one of the greatest defensive players of all time because he had fantastic anticipation and psychology. He'd bait players into going up for a shot, thinking he couldn't get there, then go up and block it. Did it several times in this video. He also had amazingly quick reflexes and got off the floor extremely fast. Olajuwon used to be the same way. Players today train to defend the perimeter and it makes sense in today's game. It just wasn't important to do that back then. I'd honestly like to see a "throwback" NBA game where the three point line was eliminated, you couldn't dribble with your hand on the side of the ball, and hand checking was allowed. I'll bet it would look way different.
