Bill "Superfoot" Wallace held instructional karate seminars in Houston,Texas during the 1980's. After instructing the attendees, he would spar with each of them and offer pointers to better their skills. On this particular day, he sparred with about 20-30 kids, then conducted the adult session that included sparring with approximately 20 men and women. One man decided to see just how tough and fast Mr. "Superfoot" really was. He was given a lesson... one that was impactful.

Bill Wallace hates getting hit, and he loves kicking people. Commentators used to mention how he definitely didn't like getting hit. If you got him, he would smile at you. That's how you knew you'd really messed up, 'cause Bill would try to knock your head off after you got him to smile at you. Seeing Bill Wallace smile at you when fighting him must have been a terrifying sight.

Number One Rule in a Dojo: NEVER disrespect a SENSEI. Good rule in life: Never disrespect anyone. The student violated both of those rules and paid for it. And as Dr. Conspiracy says, Wallace beat him only using jabs and crosses, and occasional left hooks. Student learned that when you play stupid games, you win stupid prizes.

It didn't seem like disrespect as much as a sparring session that got hard. there was no taunting, no cursing or showboating. The student also didn't hit Wallace as hard as he was being hit. Which I find baffling. I mean if a student got uppity simply by sparrign harder I'd pop him a few times, tell him "Hey I'll hit you as hard as you hi tme." That usually does it. The student was trading body shots (most of them not at full power either), ALL his jabs were taps and did anyone notice Wallace had the first HARD face shot early in the match, the knockdown. Seems to me Wallace teed off first, the student went into survival mode by amping it up, Wallace took it personally, the student decided to not hit back to the head hard (except for a few times). Also if you beat someone using jabs crosses and hooks (and he threw uppercuts and overhead rights) you're using ALL OF BOXING. Wallace was the more experienced skilled fighter and he was in charge, he took things a bit personally I think and decided to escalate. The student wasn't stupid, but rose tot he occasion, while STILL HOLDING BACK.

I enjoyed this. Bill was giving a good lesson to the bloke here, because there are so many who think they're 'damn good', and theyre nearly always wrong, coupled with inflated egos. If he learned from this, he felt a taste of Wallaces real ability. If Bill had actually lost his cool he would have knocked the bloke out, but he didnt. I recall Joe Corley saying that Bills 'happy go luck' joking attitude tends to mask a deep determination, and some fighters thought 'he's too nice to win', but all he did *was win*, both in point fights and six years of kickboxing. I recall a seminar ( UK) where some young (stupid guys, not there to learn but hanging around), started saying stuff to him a bit out of whack, I think they were just very jealous... and I saw Bills face change, saying softly to them 'tangle with me and I'll wipe the floor with you' , (paraphrased). For years and years Bill sparred with everyone/ anyone. Ive seen some blokes try to go hard on him, usually roundkicking his back, which causes a big slap but has no real effect, attempting to convince themselves 'I nailed superfoot' or some self- ego thing. Bill tolerates this well, but go too far and he'd blast them with a solid left hook or a head kick to keep things real. A true gentleman, as well as an incredible karateman and kickboxer.

Always important to train without ego..dont go punch for punch..if someone connects with a good punch, compliment your partner and asked what they did..ask them to show u,, stroke their ego,, if they are better than u,, take their knowledge to make yourself better..if u r better, then control your opponent n set the pace.. it's all about training, focus, learning. Improving and getting better than u were prior to the session. Fights happen outside..inside is a lab.. where u try things out so u r prepared for the outside.

Wallace drops him with a left hook at 11 seconds, a short left hook. The lesson that Wallace taught right there-- one that the student, due to the student's Mt. Everest-sized ego, ignored--is to always keep your guard up. But the student keeps his right arm low, so he's still wide-open to left hooks and so, Wallace keeps nailing him with left hooks. A left hook/right uppercut combination knocks out anyone like this student--Wallace went easy on him, he could've knocked him out with a left hook/right uppercut at any time, not to mention that he never kicked him at all. The student learned nothing here except pain, he sure got plenty of pain. And the student got what he deserved. As Mike Tucker said, when you go into a dojo, there is always one rule that must never be violated--never disrespect a sensei. If you disrespect the sensei, sensei will hurt you and teach you all about pain, that's part of being a sensei. If you have ever been a sensei, you know this.

Real talk! Respect to both men but Sensei Wallace may have when a bit to far. Yes he didn't open up on him with his legs but I think he when overboard a bit because Wallace was getting pop and then the guy drew blood. That seem to trigger that unrelenting attack even if it wasn't full power originally the sparring session looked semi full contact mixed with point fighting. When you fight under ranks all that is too be expected especially if you a world champion the world over. My reasoning is based off the fact that everybody sparring stay for the most part in there little space Bill when the extra mile and made it a bit of a brawl even after you could almost see the blue belt didn't want any more. I respect both men buy we as black belts have to set the standard not the easiest thing to do but that is what separates us from the rest. @@vernonjenkins8 bro, I box. Been there and done that. However, you still need hard contact all out experience so that later you can just touch to the head and keep it technical but bodywork can actually be done pretty hard for conditioning. As far as this video I didn't find anything really excessive here. Doubt that guy even had a headache after this but everything is relative. I coach boxing, 45 years old, 6'7, 185lbs and when I spar my heavyweight 240lbs I am trying to kill him especially to the body but with my 135lbs guy it's all speed and even then I pull my speed back a little. In this video I see nothing excessive. The guy needs to get better base and learn technique. He is out of balance and on his heels and Bill is pulling pretty much every punch on him and also stops after 3-4 punches. Usually we dont stop til that bell rings unless the guy is hurt so...

The punch stopped right on his face and he didnt punch "through" him. Then he got put on his ass. The tall guy had bad balance and fell down a lot so maybe bill didnt hit him hard right then but i didnt see anything where he needed to be put in his place. Sometimes the lesser skilled person is over excited or nervous and can go a little too hard or have a punch get away from them. Who knows exactly, but that guy is a very annoying type of sparring partner. I've trained with similar people. They will joke and be friendly, then try to hurt you with a hard shot as soon as you relax and become casual with them. THEN, as soon as you bring your aggression level up to match they try to make you look like the asshole. Notice that he never lost that cocky, smartass attitude until he got his bell rung a few times. There are rules in martial arts--I saw a karate grandmaster in Okinawa tear apart a student, in a similar situation, when the student smiled in the same cocky way after landing a side kick to the ribs on the grandmaster. It was supposed to be a simple demonstration of technique, but the student landed that kick very hard, real fight hard, and grinned the "I'm a badass," grin. And paid for it, the sensei nailed him with throat punch, went to the body, and put a knee to his head. Knocked him the f*** out. Nobody had to explain to us why the sensei decided to drop him, but then, the rest of us knew, and applied, one of the most fundamental laws in a dojo: ALWAYS respect the sensei.

Am sure Bill Wallace learned to be humble and merciful. Yes it's about winning without really hurting anyone more than you have to. Bill would let you know you been beat and be merciful and not to come at him again. Most learn their lesson and walk away and consider themselves blessed. The others usually get less teeth and a fat nose for stupidity.

And what does this show us? That there's a HUGE difference between some Karate class cowboy who thinks he's all that vs a professional fighter who's stepped into the ring and won. :) There's just so much that can ONLY be learnt in the ring. Where the kicks and punches have KO intent behind them. :)

Im not sure if this guy really deserved the beat down he got or if Mr Wallace sometimes gets too competitive when he spars. I don't know, theres not enough information here. I am a fan of Mr Wallace and its quite impressive how he was able to perform so well years after he retired and make it look easy. I don't know if I would want to spar with him though

You could see that in the background, all the practitioners are doing a relaxed, point style version of sparring. The a$$hole with Wallace gave him a hard suckerpunch, which ended with Bill b!tch-slapping the guy around the floor for several minutes. Beautiful.

I'd be surprised if he didn't give the guy pointers afterwards, it seemed pretty controlled to me. As an adult whether your a white belt or a black belt hit as hard as you want to be hit, occasionally people catch you by accident a bit harder than intended as you move in and double impact with them hitting you but when someone is swinging hard in a light spar and they get the same back then you made your bed lol

I've seen lots a vid's of Superfoot sparring. If you go light, he goes light. If you keep it playful, he keeps it playful. If you want to try to prove something - he'll show you that was a mistake. I imagine he ran into that mentality often through the years. He's there to teach, train, have fun, and others are there to try inflate their ego against a former world champion. Be respectful and appreciate a living legend - don't be complete douche-bag.

I would NOT want Mr. Wallace walking me down. When the student raised his hands in defeat around the 4.15 mark, I heard someone say, "No, you're not quitting". I think Mr. Wallace decided the student bought the ticket (punched Bill's face) and now the student was going to see the show. You just DON'T try and show up someone like Bill Wallace at a seminar.
