Artists (especially black artists) were chewed up, exploited, robbed, and abused because that was the game left to play. If you tried to go it alone or organize, you got pushed out or killed. Look what happened to Sam Cooke. Nowadays, if you're indie and self contained, STAY INDIE. Keep some level of freedom. Yeah, the gatekeeps have a lot of the venues and the radio. The radio is dead. They really don't have anything for you except a quick bag of crumbs. Do it yourself.
