I can’t wait to see what happens next week with Bad Habits. I think despite the honestly insane label radio push, it’s gonna fall way faster than desired. Wanna note that Maneskin's song is actually a cover of a version of "Beggin'" by Norwegian act Madcon from 2007, which had a similar arrangement but added some rapping. It's from an EP they put out right after winning the Italian X Factor in 2017, which is mostly covers (including, for whatever reason, "Let's Get It Started"). I don't know why this is catching fire around the world now, when they had a new record released this year. It really does sound like a demo, and their later songs are much better. It is quite exciting for me that two Eurovision winners are on the Hot 100 simultaneously, even if the tunes aren't top-notch. I wonder how it's gonna go from here. And what’s sad is that Armys probably wouldn’t have found your video if stan twitter (specifically that one Ariana stan who been obsessed with BTS) didn’t twist and weaponized your words to fuel their BTS hatred. Regardless, I think the whole fallout of this was unnecessary, but at least armys are leaving him alone now instead of stalking him and shit like Shawn Mendes stans did a few years back, according to someone in the comments I am a BTS fan who has also watched Mark for years now, and although I don't always agree with his opinions, I can understand his point of view.

I think Ed forgot that alongside Shape of You, he also released the fantastic rock song that is Castle on the Hill, which I think did a lot to help his credibility. Mark I'm so sorry for all the hate that you got for your last video, I really enjoy your videos and yes, BTS's fans happen to be a very toxic fandom. Tbh I been listening to kpop since 2010 and I been in plenty of kpop fandoms but no one of them is that level of engage with the artist than BTS's fans and I have mixed feels about it: it really feels nice to see diversity on the charts, the BTS phenomenon in the US -at least in my point of view- has helped to show that talent is not only found in English speaking acts and that actually you can make it to the top of the charts not speaking a word of English (most of the BTS's members don't speak English). But in the other hand, I find awful how their "fans" have this level of loyalty towards a group of people that they barely know to the point to promote aggressive behaviors like hacking accounts just because they don't like what the user says about their artist. Sadly this is promote by their own company: kpop in general, and korean society too, are very strict when it comes to moral issues and behaviors of their acts, basically to be successful you need to have your record clean: no dating, no smoking, no drugs, etc, otherwise you will get cancel and your career will be over (even though this happen sometimes in the us I believe that it doesn't happen in that level). BTS happen to be a very scandal free group and, of course, this attracts a lot of young and new fans that like them for their "pure image" and "feel of being accessible" rather than their music. Sometimes I even think that their own company tries to promote them as "boyfriends" instead as musicians, especially now that they are in the US market, and that's insane to me. I completely agree with your review of butter: it is a bad song, not a terrible one, but definitely a low one in their discography. But have ever been all the N°1 song in the hot100 good? no, but I really find that the charts should make some changes in the way that the points are counted to be more realistic of what is popular in streaming and radio in the US. This doesn't mean that I want BTS to stop charting in the US and that they are the problem, this is an issue that its been around for YEARS and what does bothers me is how a lot of the gp blames BTS for it when men, at least their sales are stable to get them in the N°1 not like some Travis Scott N°1's that only lasted a week (same to willow from TS, 6ix9ine, nicki, etc). I do feel like we need some changes in the charts and, like you said, probably if this continues other record labels are going to start to put pressure in Columbia to do something about it (especially if they continue to block big names in the industry), but don't put the all the fault in BTS when the system was already broken. In the end this always ends up with two extreme postures: a group of crazy fans defending the indefensible and a group of people making racist remarks about BTS denying the fact that they are popular. Finally, just some clarifications: they are not an underground group lol, they might not be popular among older people, but they actually have been around for 8th years and their Korean discography is good. I'm not a fan, but as someone who is been into the kpop world I can tell you that the reason of why they are respected in south korea is because the quality of their korean records is good and, believe it or not, there's a conception that they are not the "typical manufactured idol group" that for years kpop big companies have put out. Also, please inform yourself a little bit about the military enlistment issue: sorry if this sounds too harsh, but as someone who is half-korean I find very disrespectful how western media treated this issue without acknowledging the history and context of why compulsory military service is need.

Jeezus, they really did a number on you. I used to like BTS, but the fan behavior really REALLY soured me on BTS. I like a lot of k-pop groups, one group in particular, MonstaX has been getting A LOT of hate from the BTS fanbase for "daring" to also promote in the US, as if the US was somehow territory conquered by BTS and no other korean artist is allowed to perform here. To a certain degree, I understand some of the protectiveness towards BTS because sometimes i feel like American media writes off k-pop as just another fad for the young'uns...I'm not young, and what attracted me to k-pop is they're a lot more fluid with the genre of music they perform. For example, I'd never heard of dubstep mixed into a pop song until I heard EXO's "Wolf"...Anyway, many BTS fans are just straight up bullies, and that's not right...I hope other k-pop fans learn to "chill" so at least we don't reflect badly on the artists we like.

I really don't get when people say they don't like BTS because of the fans. As if I have to interact with other fans to enjoy an artists music which for me music is a very personal thing. Other people's opinion and behavior shouldn't affect how one feels about an artist's music. If you don't like their music anymore that I can understand, but I don't like people using the "obsessive crazy toxic fandom" as the excuse. Every fandom has toxic fans, it's not just a kpop problem. Just stay off twitter, it's a much peaceful world.
@ashram123 жыл бұрын
@@crystalsnow1138 I didn't say one day "Well, the fans are terrible, I'm going to stop following BTS". More like I had a lot of negative interactions with the fans and I started to associate all these negative interactions with the group they supposedly stand for. Here's an analogy: You go to a restaurant that you think has awesome food, but the waiter or deliveryman is always super rude to you, do you still go to the restaurant? I think most people would just stop going to the restaurant even though the waiter has no influence on food quality. And to be clear: I haven't been to a BTS fan forum in a long while. However I still encounter toxic BTS fans in forums for groups that AREN'T BTS. If ARMY stayed in their lane, I wouldn't have a problem with them.
@crystalsnow11383 жыл бұрын
I'm sorry that you've had bad experiences with BTS stans. I just don't like when BTS fans are stereotyped that way when in fact so many are very nice, smart, helpful, charitable, and respectful. Those types of fans should be acknowledged more than the crazy stans. And for your restaurant analogy there are plenty of times I've had bad service but I still go to those restaurants because usually it will be a different waiter and the service isn't bad all the time.
@ashram123 жыл бұрын
@@crystalsnow1138 Because the toxic BTS fans make their presence more felt. Like I mentioned, I don't hang out in BTS forums, and toxic fans are more likely to identify themselves as BTS fans and go to forums for k-pop or other k-pop groups to be rude. Whereas sane BTS fans don't feel the need to go to another group's forum and remind everyone "I'm a BTS fan" (for example). And like I said, it's not a conscious decision to avoid BTS because of some bad fans, but rather, after many bad encounters, the brain starts to make an association with "BTS = unpleasant interactions with fans"

I totally agree that Billboard is corrupt and that its practices have always had a bias against POC. My question is why do the stans care so much whether Billboard considers a song the best if they are fully aware of how much bullshit is behind their calculation practices?

The chasing of accolades and achievements is lowkey kinda stupid and all of us care more than we should, Yes I include all of this, even this show. That honestly is an important conversation to have than any week on Billboard Breakdown and while I commend Mark for that ironic detachment (it is a walk on eggshells after all), it doesn't always translate to the audience, and I do include myself after all. After all, we all like when our fav wins right? And now that I've pissed off everyone, I want to also draw attention to the "WhatBoutIsms" and say, Yes BTS is huge and all, but what is the point of getting a number one on the Hot 100? It's to profit from the record label, not the artist themselves, as you say, they work hard, they didn't have a lot of money and food, blah blah. Again, it's the issue of longevity. Outside of personal favs, will these hits be remembered long-term? Pop as a genre thrives on this secret weapon. We'll hype something up, it gets popular for months and depending on recency bias, will be forgotten later in 6 months top. Like I can list so many artists who don't have a #1 (Ellie Goulding) or who don't have a Grammy (Katy Perry, Nicki Minaj, 2Pac), but they are actually remembered (list your favs in the replies if you want). "Hits" might be apart of the legacy (popularity), but a chart placement rather than cultural impact than to be missed in those conversations, and that's the problem.

@@martingneu4590 I actually agree with the information leaked between Mark and Forbes in the updated email that Be, there latest project, actually got an album bomb that didn't feel as "gimmacky" cause it shows they can release something in their native tongue and actually move units. Sure the fans were getting Life Goes On to the #1, but there was legit streaming done for the other cuts here, in the same way, last year they had an explosion for the 7 albums. This is where it confuses me, they actually are penetrating the market, but the way they are doing it is chasing trends not setting into their unique niche. The English concessions would not be a problem if it sanitizes their appeal and make them a cash cow rather an authentic band and I know BTS can do better than this.

Welcome back to potential hits! A series where I check out songs that could have been big hits but weirdly didn’t. Song of the week: *’Evacuate The Dancefloor’ by Cascada* Ah 2009 a year where the club boom started and where new acts cane into the game. And with that Cascada I believe could have crossed over much older more than she has so far. She is popular around the world but I feel she could have been much more huge in the U.S besides Everytime We Touch. Evacuate The Dancefloor is a song that I’m shocked did not become a minor hit with how much I heard it in commercials and people playing it. This song would have been a classic dance song back then and probably be in a Just Dance game. A track with strong synths and a fun beat with grooves that add to Cascada joining the Dancefloor and stealing the moment with her delivery and presence. The glitchy voices add to the times and that hook is really strong with how good it is with having fun and being in the moment at hand. Underrated song and I can also see it becoming a viral hit in Tik Tok! Next week: We’re going to 2014 to a very underrated song from a one hit wonder that actually did get a hit in 2014 that I feel many of you should check out. See you all next week! 😎
