After the mess of last week’s album bomb, we needed something really good to come out of this week and Beyoncé thankfully gave us that. Congratulations to her on leading the Hot 100 once again. The way she’s still able to dominate the chart more than 25 years into her career is very impressive!

I certainly don’t mind ‘Training Season’ but it feels more like an album track rather than a second single. ‘Houdini’ is the much better of the two for me; that had “radio smash” written all over it from the beginning. Speaking of the latter, it appears to have locked for the 2024 Year-End list as of last week according to TOTC! ❤
@MACMAMI11 ай бұрын
Couldn't agree more. It feels like a B-side from the "Future Nostalgia" sessions much like "Dance The Night" was. But at least "Dance The Night" had a hook.

Personally, I find myself enjoying “Training Season” just as much as I do “Houdini”. Sure, it might be more stripped back than the heavily synthesized production of “Houdini”, but I don’t see that as an inherent flaw. I, in particular, really like how Dua Lipa’s vocal delivery alongside the grooviness in the composition (specifically in the verses and pre-chorus) make the song hypnotic and entrancing in all the right ways. If the quality of these tracks for her upcoming album hold firm, I might go out of my way to get a physical copy of it.

@allon2650 'Feather' is still doing well enough on the radio so I don't think it'll be impacted by the UMG and TikTok situation as much as other songs in the chart, at least not in the immediate future. 'Murder On The Dancefloor' is unfortunately slightly down in performance from last week despite climbing 10 places, so it probably just filled in the Kanye album tracks rather than having any kind of momentum.

"Training Season" is decent, but it just doesn't sound like a hit, period. It's just hookless after repeated listens so I expect its #27 debut will also most likely be its peak position. I also feel while both "Houdini" and "Training Season" are overall well-produced and sung, they sound and feel too much like a continuation of the "Future Nostalgia" era rather than something distinct to set them apart: which leaves me feeling worried that her next era will suffer in result from diminished returns just feeling and sounding like "Future Nostalgia II".

Best (Tie): 'Breathe' - Yeat: I don't particularly care for Yeat, but this is by far the best song I've heard from him. That Regular Show sample of all things sounds great. Best (Tie): 'End Of Beginning' - Djo: Honestly, another pleasant surprise. I haven't watched Stranger Things since season one, but I liked this song quite a bit. HM: 'Bittersweet' - Gunna: Another solid song from Gunna, which is never something I'd thought I'd ever say. Curious to see if he sticks in this lane. It's a good one for him even if it involves talking about feelings and situations he might be ready to move on from. Worst: 'Whatever She Wants' - Bryson Tiller: I don't see what you and apparently everyone else sees in this song. Never been a Bryson Tiller fan, but that weak beat and singing didn't make it better. The fact that Yeat, Gunna, and an actor from Stranger Things impressed me more than Dua Lipa this week has me concerned about the next album. 'Houdini' grew on me, so maybe 'Training Session' will as well. However, I was not looking for more disco from Dua Lipa, especially with a song that could afford stronger production. Probably one of the better weeks for new debuts though, so I'll take what I can get.

Looks like 2024 will mark the end of the TikTok era for many artists. Anyways, I just want to say that I was hoping this year would end up being better than 2023. And while I feel like this winter season has been pretty decent overall, some of the stuff I've seen chart recently is...concerning to say the least. Both "Beautiful Things" and ESPECIALLY "Carnival" being in the top 5 feels so cursed. Also "Truck Bed" is going to make the official year end list because it just HAD to cheat recurrency. It took me like 6 months to realize the charts were pretty rough in 2023. This year, it took me less than 2. I could end up being wrong by the end of the year, but right now I'm concerned about the direction popular music is heading in right now.

So earlier this month, I got around to watching both the Color Purple remake and Priscilla. I even chose to watch Leo so we can have a top ten. It's now time for the finalized version of my ranking of every 2023 music-related movie I've seen. Remember how last year, it took me until November to get around to watching all the ones from 2022? Every 2023 Music-Related Movie I've Seen Ranked: 10. Leo 9. The Little Mermaid 8. Chevalier 7. Theater Camp 6. Wonka (But the Wonka Xbox with the edible controller though, that's better than any movie on this list.) 5. Priscilla 4. American Symphony 3. The Color Purple 2. Maestro (Too many people have been treating this as the Blud of the 2024 Oscars Best Picture nominees. The opening alone is better than the entirety of some other Oscar-esque movies.) 1. Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 3 (So nobody responded to whether or not I should count this as a music-related movie, so I'm gonna interpret that as people thinking it should stay. I still understand this is the lamest choice for number one for multiple reasons.) Damn good year for these types of movies if I do say so myself. Part of me is tempted to say why I make these eveytime I post one of these types of rankings so we wouldn't get the terrible romance movies incident again. I should add there's a chance I might watch Wish because I watch every Disney animated movie. But if I do, I probably won't update this list because I like the idea of ending on a positive note. Anyways, see ya when the nominees for the Chaddest and most important award show ever, the Kids Choice Awards, get announced, and I talk about Guardians 3, the Little Mermaid remake, possibly Wonka, and maybe Leo again. Oh, and I left a bonus as a reply to myself.
@anamelessyoutuber146211 ай бұрын
Ok, here's the bonus. I decided to have a list of what's the two best and two worst songs from the ones that are music-related movies because they're musicals. I'm not doing this with the ones that are music-related movies because they're biopics or original stories about a musician. I'm not even doing this with the Guardians of the Galaxy/Baby Driver style music-related movies. The Little Mermaid: Best of the Bunch: Under the Sea Honorable Mention: Part of Your World (My favorite song from the original is Poor Unfortunate Soul, but while the remake version wasn't bad, it still got the biggest downgrade out of all the songs from the original.) Dishonorable Mention: For The First Time Worst of the Bunch: The Scuttlebutt (What else did you expect it to be? It felt more like a Dora song than I expected. I should add that when I re-listened to all the songs from these movies, I skipped the reprises, so this was the last Little Mermaid remake song I listened to. Truly saved the best for last.) Wow, the songs from the original made the top two, while the forgettable new songs made the bottom two? Who else saw that coming? Leo: Best of the Bunch: Last Year Honorable Mention: When It's Us (There's a part of this song where they acknowledge it's a song? How W.) Dishonorable Mention: When I Was Ten Wordt of the Bunch: Lizard's Lament Wonka: Best of the Bunch: Pure Imagination Honorable Mention: You've Never Had Chocolate Like This (For a Moment is the second best original song if any of you are wondering.) Dishonorable Mention: A World of Your Own Worst of the Bunch: Sweet Tooth (Wonka, what did you do? Villain songs are usually bangers, and yet, yours is the weakest song in the movie despite still being decent. Yeah, all the songs from this movie are some level of good.) Honestly, when I first saw Wonka, I thought the soundtrack was fine, but wasn't crazy about it. But after re-listening to the songs, while it's still my least favorite out of the soundtrack from the three Willy Wonka movies, it did grow on me. The Color Purple: Best of the Bunch: Hell No! Honorable Mention: She Be Mine Dishonorable Mention: Miss Celie's Blues (Sister) Worst of the Bunch: SUPERPOWER (I) (Just like Wonka, even the weakest song is still decent. But unlike Wonka, there's way more songs from that movie I'd go as far as to call, "playlist worthy." Easily the best soundtrack out of the four. I had a great time re-listening to it. Warner Bros. is just as good as making soundtracks as they are at deleting movies.)

I can't speak on that since I didn't become an active music nerd until the 2010s, and I was born in the 90s. As for this decade, can we please get another 2020 & 2021? I'm referring to just the music in the former year BTW

Song Recommendation: My House-Royal Republic Wait. Royal Republic released a new song last month. How am I only now learning this? Hey Release Radar section at Spotify, why didn't you tell me about this, and instead notified me of stuff like a Popular remix? Finally, I get the chance to talk about these guys. I've came across some of their songs on Spotify, and they're awesome. As for this song, it's pretty rad. The opening guitars are awesome, and the rest of the song doesn't disappoint. Man is that production good. It's an absolute jam. I get a kick out of the bridge in particular for some reason. Don't know why, but I do. Best song with that title as far as I'm concerned. Though I wish the actual song had the nice jazz opening from the music video. At least the song is still a blast without it.

Like with Doja Cat, Dua shouldn't have this Universal problem, right?
@justezek859611 ай бұрын
Some of her writers are licensed to UMPC, so it will affect her in terms of TikTok promo. Similar to Doja tho, Dua Lipa has entrenched pop radio on this side of the Atlantic, I think she’ll be fine.

TikTok managed to make the dance/electronic chart into this mind numbingly surreal, chaotic mess in which dozens of really weird, wacky sounding DIY songs by random people uploading music to TikTok are competing against the usual pop songs to the extent that whatever this is supposed to be - kzbin.info/www/bejne/qZi9iX6QbK6liJY charted higher than a song by Marshmallo this week so I genuinely don't get why it wasn't able to at least make the hot 100 more interesting than this. There's still such a ridiculous limit to how good or interesting a charting song can be that we couldn't even get one Hazbin Hotel song to chart

Song recommendations: Irish Drinking Song by Kyle Gordon: Another awesome Kyle Gordon comedy song, with infectious production, bold vocals, and iconic lyrics. “LI-DEE-DIE-DEE-DEE-DUM LI-DEE-DIE-DEE-DEE KILL A FUCKIN’ ENGLISHMAN AND THROW HIM IN THE SEA!” Superbad by YNG Martyr: An absolute banger, with infectious production, great rapping from YNG, and awesome lyrics. Such an incredible banger! Hope! by Lamar Lovetone: A really cool track, with infectious and jazzy production, eccentric vocals, and cool lyrics. An interesting track to be sure. Lovers In A Past Life by Calvin Harris and Rag'n'Bone Man: A cool song, with toe tapping production, great vocals from Rag’n’Bone, and cool lyrics. A pleasant surprise! Generic Incelcore Song by EDGEMASTER42: A really enjoyable banger, with infectious production, fun vocals, and good lyrics. Not bad. Dial Tone by Chris Webby and Millyz: Another awesome Chris Webby track, with cool production, slick Webby vocals, a solid guest verse from Millyz, and great lyrics. Really cool!

For as much as I really like Calvin, I'm sadly not feeling 'Lovers In A Past Life'. Probably his weakest song in a while for me. I will say that his other collab with Rag'n'Bone Man, 'Giant', was amazing when it became a hit here in the UK back in 2019!

Training Season is a good song, but to me it has all the stop/starting of Break My Heart, but much less of a groove. And there's not much low end to cling to, just the plucked guitar which sounds good, but then the wirey synths come in as the climax and it just doesn't feel fulfilling. I'm not sure if it'll take off. She was lucky to perform it at the Grammys and the lyric teasing on shows like Jimmy Kimmel was just a confusing strategy. I wish her luck, but it's clear she's being left to her own devices now. Which may not lead to label pleasing results.

So, that was an interesting episode ... I do wonder, though: what is y'all's actual opinion on the Universal/TikTok dispute? I'm certainly not an expert on the matter, so I'd be interested to hear what more knowledgeable people think. Personally, though, I think what Mark says is deeply instructive - like it or not, but TikTok is such a cultural juggernaut that making yourself irrelevant on it is a decision that'll certainly hurt smaller artists that are able to use viral traction to gain recognition, which helped democratize the pop music landscape over the past couple of years, and just on principle, I think widespread access to music through platforms like KZbin or TikTok is important. The higher-ups at Universal certainly aren't doing it for the artists, that's for sure. I do also think that there are issues with these platforms we need to be concerned about, though, and addressing them probably isn't gonna be straightforward.
@alex_flamer11 ай бұрын
The struggle is going to make discovering newer artists harder, unless they're independent. It also puts a dent in UMG's promotional budget since, regardless of their reasons for not liking TikTok anymore, they just put a dent in their own promotional revenue.
@alex_flamer11 ай бұрын
Those who are probably the least affected by this conflict are independent and underground artists who are only using the platform just to promote their music and build a core following. Basically acting as their own label and management. We already know artists can purchase audio equipment and make stuff in their bedrooms. TikTok and streaming platforms are just tools for promotion and to allow easy access to your music. Doesn't matter if you become one of the biggest, richest acts in the world. As long as you can make a name for yourself and create a stable revenue, you can live happily.
@MissAlmostFine11 ай бұрын
I can understand UMG's stated goals: artists and writers should be paid more and A.I. use of their likenesses and voices need to be regulated ASAP. My issue is I don't believe that's actually UMG's issue. It's more likely an issue of how much money the suits can get paid than true care for their artists. I also think UMG is 1)underestimating how normal TikTok has become to the avg younger person AND 2)overestimating how much them pulling the music is gonna affect the app itself.
@Ruinwyn11 ай бұрын
It will force UMG and labels under UMG to find other ways to promote their music. While it does hurt some artists at the moment, I also understand why UMG feels they can't accept a multiyear deal that pays basically no royalties. TikTok is pivoting to longer content, which means more of the song gets used. They have also already launched their own music streaming platform on some markets and are hoping to expand. UMG can't really offer lower royalty deal to TikTok Music than Spotify, Apple and KZbin, when TikTok Music is basically poaching users from those platforms. And UMG specifically stated that the deal offered was for TikTok and TikTok Music. Every change TikTok has made and is planning to make is to keep people within TikTok. If TikTok virality stops translating to streams from paying platforms they become mostly worthless.
@TheFrustratedHistorian10 ай бұрын
Regarding how many artists might be hurt by UMG's business practices, did any of you know that Em Beihold (who's signed to Republic Records) had a new song, "Maybe Life Is Good"?
@jchmusic758711 ай бұрын
I don't know if TikTok is playing fair or not. I just know that the music labels are money hungry in general, so i have no sympathy for the hacks behind the labels, except the artists and writers
