Disco continues to completely dominate the pop charts in a way that no other genre has ever done, not even when compared to the rise of rock n roll back in the 50s. It is insane just how quickly disco went from a brand new genre to having 2/3 of the songs this year being Disco. That sort of thing almost never happens to any type of genre, and in retrospect it’s not surprising to see why. After so many years of bland and soulless ballads and lack of innovation since the early 70s, it was bound to happen that a dance boom was going to appear, especially as people want to forget all the terrible things that were happening in the 70s (we’ll talk about 2008 later), and disco was the right antidote for that. Not only that, but the music industry was pushing it like crazy. The Bee Gees especially were incredibly dominant, almost rivaling the meteoric rise of the Beatles in how much of an impact they had on the disco sound for 1978. Outside of disco, the only thing closest to diversity is rock. Basically, if it’s not something that is related to disco, it is most likely an arena rock song like Queen or Styx, a soft rock song, or a power pop song like Journey. Outside of that, there was also the fact that the musical Grease became huge, with several songs from that film becoming certified hits. And there are traces of jazz incorporating both r&b, soul and soft rock that will become Smooth Jazz. Besides that, if you aren’t a fan of disco, this is going to be a terrible year for you, because pretty much everything now is disco. Personally, I am not the biggest fan of the Bee Gees outside of a couple classics, and I feel like this year was a pretty meh year for disco overall. Definitely a pretty solid year for 70s standards, but it made me hungry for more. Best and worst #1s of the year: Boogie Oogie Oogie by A Taste Of Honey and Three Times A Lady by The Commodores (Honestly, I think the #1s are all pretty good, but this sticks out so badly it hurts)
