It's amazing that so much of the NIN music catalog is dark, angry and introspective. Then you see Trent's terrific smile and laugh in interviews. You just don't expect to see a side of him like this. He's so well spoken and intelligent. It's great that he appears to have found peace and happiness in his life. Obviously sobriety, his wife and his kiddos are the major driver of that. He also appears to be a guy that would be great to have a beer and a good conversation about life with. Being the same age as Trent, I love how he's still so in demand and relevant vs. others of this age that are has-beens. He's representing our age group like a boss! He sang "Hurt" at the Panorama concert in 2017 and the video is on KZbin. He crushed it! He just sang it with emotion that can only come through living 50 plus years of life's pains and it's ups and downs. I connected to the song for that very reason. His work on Halsey's album is simply top notch and mesmerizing. I hope it's a smashing success for Halsey.

Wow! I love your comment. It truly says a lot about you as well. An i hope it gets all the credit it deserves indeed!
@derryanr28243 жыл бұрын
Yeah in one of his interviews, he truly said that the artistic expressions of his music also manifested in his real life. He also turned to drugs and alcohol afterwards, thinking that his existential brooding can be alleviated through the expression of music. However, as you have said, he has been able to move on and went past that. People would be able to compartmentalise things (such as being dark, angry and introspective through music) and not let them be defined as "who you are in your daily life". In a way, it is essentially acting and a form of catharsis that people are unable to do in a protective and civil society..
@ryanvirgillo82203 жыл бұрын
Great comment. I was just saying the same thing about him finding happiness. I'll never for get my first concert Philly September 1995: Prick/Nine Inch Nails/David Bowie. I was 13. The 2 duets with Trent & Bowie and Bowie's performance is on KZbin as well.
@skullsaintdead2 жыл бұрын
Agreed, but I would adapt "his sobriety, wife and kids" have given him peace to *he* alone has given himself peace. Either his thought patterns have changed (perhaps through therapy) or he's taken meds/gotten his depression/physical ailments under control (anti-depressants, ECT, ketamine etc). Just a fair warning to people that simply stopping drug abuse, getting married and having children doesn't qualify you for self-worth and contentment.

Funny that her fans were worried she'd be boring -- they have done the exact same thing to Trent every time he's expressed happiness in the past. "Oh, Trent's happy? He's going to make a shit album." I even saw people on the Spiral forum (way back in the day) say they hoped Trent's dog would die, or they couldn't want for his wife to divorce him or die. Like, WHAT the fuck? These artists inspire me, and I LOVE Trent's work. But I would sacrifice new ear candy for his happiness, if that was actually a thing. But luckily it's not, and NIN still fucking kicks ass.
@DaemonWulf72 жыл бұрын
a lot of people want something unsustainable. you can't have someone screaming venom from the void forever... either the void runs out of venom or the venom kills them. i read something from Maynard once where he said something along the lines of "if i'm still making songs about how i hate the world in thirty years, i fucked up." Trent's brilliant, and if people walk away for the unforgivable sin of a couple songs that sound pop, they didn't understand to begin with. but to wish ill on someone so you can have something edgy to play loud in the drive-thru at Wendy's is pretty sick. i hope they find something healthy to make them happier.

You don’t know me, but when I spend time watching interviews to gain insight on the creative process of music, it means the music is compelling and profound. This is why I am drawn to music, especially concept albums which are difficult to compose, be critically acclaimed, and loved by the masses (not just fans of the artists). Great music can be played on repeat w/o growing tired, and it has nuance so you will discover something different when you listen. I remember hearing New Americana and my ears perked up, got goose bumps from her voice & vocal delivery. I liked her songs & features, but I didn’t buy her LP until this one. And I ran out on lunch break to buy the CD to support her art. Sorry for long post-just wanted to share my love for IICHLIWP. It’s a Grammy-worthy masterpiece, but we know how the industry works.

A bit off topic, but listen to The Velvet Underground's "Heroin", then immediately listen to NIN's "Mr. Self-Destruct"(original version), and you'll hear them fact that T. Reznor wrote that song as a homage, and maybe to tell Lou Reed he can relate. The watch the dockumentary from "Closure" the NIN VHS, on youtube of course. If you pay attention you'll see both Trent & Lou backstage having a conversation. Pretty cool. oh, and their was a dinosaur enemy in Super Mario World called a Reznor. Their is a heater manufacturing company named Reznor. Rumor has it Trent's family once owned it. It's not common name so who knows. Maybe.
