When I shot Canon DSLR cameras, I always had a 270EX II flash attached. I modified this flash with the Joe Demb Photojournalist Diffuser/Reflector which poduced very nice lighting. If I remember, the 270EX II had a slave capability - which was pretty awesome. I use a small Godox 360 fladh on my Sony A6600 camera but, wish that this flash was set up like the 270EX or 270EX II.

I didn’t realize this flash could be used with a “bounce” feature, which makes me very interested in it. Another feature would be using it to trigger an off-camera flash

A shoot/through umbrella will definitely help. The larger you can make the source of light the softer it will be.

thanks Eric..I shoot Nikon so bought a used sb22 for $30..it's about the same size as the 270 and it also tilts up for bounce flash..you're right..they come in handy and if you attach an inexpensive cord to get it off the camera, these little flashes can give you a whole different look !

Please do more with flash/lighting, especially off camera flash with less expensive triggers or cords. I’m just starting to appreciate moving my flash off the camera handheld with a flash cord, but would love to learn more. I’m looking at Godox /flashpoint/Yongnuo (2 light setup) vs. add on triggers for my 430EX2 and 580 EX (original - cheap pawn shop find!). My 70D can trigger the 580 remotely but it’s complicated and .... help!

I am interested in this flash to solve two issues in direct sun to fill harsh shadows of my kid using a 35mm lense, So like 2m to 4m away from a kid outdoors And family shoots indoors during daytime to get more detail Would it work

Yes this flash would definitely work for that. Not the best flash ever but in a pinch will get the job done. If you’re looking to do more formal shoots you’d be better off with the 430 ex.

Thanks! Since the 430 is radio controlled, I would definitely recommend the canon ST E3 RT. You can save a few bucks with an off brand transmitter but I can’t vouch for their reliability.

No, the radio controller will only control flashed with “RT” at the end.

It depends on the conditions. If it’s an outdoor daytime party I would say definitely yes. If it’s indoors, the 270 is borderline, I would recommend a 430EX instead.

It really depends how close you are to your subject. Also if you're shooting in daylight or at night. Obviously this isn't the most powerful flash so it may not keep you the same result as a regular speed light.

Hey Eric, thanks for the video. I own a 270EX II which I use for my Canon M50, but it is not powerful enough for most my gigs. Also, it only rotates up, which means that I can't bounce the flash any other direction. I have been researching for a good flash to replace it without paying the sum for an original Canon flash. Do you have any recommendation for my Canon M50?
