Another factor not mentioned that isolates the rich: when you aren't rich, you need other people. For most of us, when you move, you get friends to help. When you need money, family can sometimes help you with a loan. If you can't afford a babysitter, you may trade off with a neighbor. These can be seen as a hassle, but needing others (and them needing you) is really the basis of community. And having a community is good for mental health and happiness.

So I used to be a low voltage electrician with my brother in law. We did a lot of security systems, cameras and home entertainment systems. We installed a lot of big flat screens and crazy nice sound systems. I thought this would be just another one of those, but no, this was different. We were working in Oregon for some politician guy. He wanted a “theater” put in his house for his kids. I thought maybe he wanted the standard giant flat screen and surround sound like a normal person. No. When we got there, he had a 5 story mansion, every car you could ever dream of being jealous of, and round the clock staff. People constantly working on his 20 acre front lawn and god knows how big the back, and staff constantly cleaning the massive inside. It was like a single family was living in a luxury hotel all by themselves. We ended up installing a huge projection screen, state of the art movie theater projector, and a massive sound system. He had movie theater seats, rope lights along the steps, carpeted walls, dimmers. The fucking works. We watched an avengers movie trailer and it was like we were at the theater INSIDE of this guys house. He was only there for 10 min before he had to run. He was incredibly busy with his phone, note pad and computer. His wife came home, and she was the same thing, just the female version. Remember now, he had stressed how much he wanted his kids to have the theater in their house. It was all for them because they were so important to him. So we finished, and I was staging all of our tools in the kitchen on a pallet blanket, because god forbid anything be touched in the house. It was like a museum. Everything was in cases or put away, and seemed like nothing had been touched in years. The kids actually came home from school. Their mom was on the phone, had a notepad, on the computer, busy busy busy. Their youngest little girl runs up to her mom with a piece of paper in her hand and says with SUCH excitement and joy “Mommy! Mommy! Can you please help me with my homework?! Please!!!” That women didn’t even look at her daughter, she just put a hand up in her little girls face and snapped her fingers at their nanny while pointing at the little girl like “you deal with this, NOW!” The nanny literally dropped what she was doing in the table and scurried over in a rush over never seen before and says “oh I’ll help you with that sweetie.” The little girl started fucking crying, didn’t break eye contact with her mother who didn’t even look at her once. This is probably a daily occurrence. The mega rich were the most miserable humans I’ve ever worked with in my entire life and I did a summer at Home Depot when I was a kid. I had this in contrast to my grandparents who live on an Indian reservation in New Town, North Dakota. They have a little manufactured home, no running water (they have to go to a water plant or have someone deliver it to the house) and a dinky little tv. However, I’ve never seen so much smiling or heard so much laughter in a single house before. Everyday my mom brings my brothers to see them, my aunties bring their kids, and my uncle brings his children. They get to see nearly all of their grandkids every single day. They are the happiest people, the sweetest and the most fulfilled I’ve ever met. The mega wealthy I did work for always haggled over money, even though they had more than me or my entire family put together. They hardly smiled or laughed, really only when something negative was being said. They also didn’t like people that didn’t bow down to them. I ended up quitting because I couldn’t do it. I couldn’t kiss their asses because I didn’t respect them because I could see they didn’t respect me. People would bend over backwards and put on a face or double back their complaints about the mega rich they had behind their back. We need to stop treating them like they’re some amazing deity we need to kneel to. They have money. A lot of them have parents and bloodlines with money. It’s not special, it’s lucky and it’s disgusting how they treat people. The only reason to kiss up to them is because you want to be like them. Strive for more. There’s a lot more to life than that.

Massive butt-kissing from my colleagues, as well as being thrown under the bus by those same colleagues to make themselves look good in front of no, not the individual with the most integrity, but the one with the most wealth. I grew up working class in the US, with plenty of family that struggled farming and mining. Life had hard moments but we got by and made some great memories. I married into a wealthy family and all they did was complain and gossip about each other and everyone they knew. My ex husband thought it was his “ birthright “ to “ retire “ at 26 years old and ended up an addict (who doesn’t know how to adult) and has no convictions. He would rather kiss the asses of parents he can’t stand than work for a living. They’re miserable people and everything they do is for optics. There are a lot of plastic people, with ugly, empty souls walking around numb and completely disconnected from the realities of the world. I’m embarrassed to say that there was a time I was one of them. I wouldn’t have known there was a recession if banks weren’t making headlines because of bailouts. I can only imagine how removed billionaires are from reality and how disconnected they must be from the hardships of the world around them. I got out and now I live within a budget but I’m present, I have direction and I’m making memories with people who appreciate life.

10 years ago, I made my first million after starting a semi trucking company with my cousin 5 years prior. It didn't feel like anything. I worked so damn hard being both a driver and owner that I felt completely void of any emotion. So instead of going out and celebrating, I went downstairs to my basement and played guitar, drew in my sketch book and passed out on the couch watching star trek reruns, which is exactly what I did as a teenager. My wife woke me up and asked me to come to bed with her. Before drifting off to sleep, she asked me "you're getting me a bigger house now, right?". At that point, I felt like leaving her.

I received a hefty life insurance payout when my partner passed away back in 2010 and it was so liberating to be able to pay off the mortgage on the little flat we were living in at the time and renovate it beautifully. I gave up working, which was GREAT, but was kept busy with all the renovation projects. But the most satisfying experience was being in a position to help out my daughter, brother and Mum and close friends. That money really helped a lot of people to get out of the financial hole that they, and I, were in and set them and me up on a good path going forward. Needless to say I'm as poor as a church mouse now but am living off grid without the crippling costs of living on the grid, grow most of my food, am able to feed my animals and am as happy as Larry. Perhaps these billionaires would feel better if they used their billions to help those truly in need?

Everyone in the world has some sort of struggle to deal with in life. I will never forget when I was dealing with a divorce and my dad took me fishing and we had a talk. He had never had to deal with this type of thing, but he seen my pain and wanted to help. I had good insurance and was planning to talk to a therapist, but the appointment was weeks away. When I started telling my dad how I felt and how I was going to see someone he told me something that made me truly understand the difference between being poor and having money(at the time anyway). He said, "Rich people go to therapy and poor people go fishing". I am not saying that your station in life means you can't get help. But having something to help calm your mind is what everyone needs, his was fishing. And knowing that it can be that simple made me rethink a lot of things in my life.

This is exactly why several years ago an older billionaire began giving his money away to just everyday average people. He kept enough to live the rest of his life comfortably and provision for his heirs, but afterward began giving people he met in multiple places- ie: parks, sidewalks, theaters, etc. thousands of dollars at a time just because he could. It improved his view of life and seemed to give him a sense of purpose- helping others and in a very real way himself 😊

You are protecting them from the bad life you went thru, as you should, but you don't want to shield them from everything bad. Makes me think of our immune system. Yeah, if I ever get rich and have kids, they are going to have to work their asses off for everything they get so they don't turn out like that. They'll get cool presents and such on birthdays and xmas and such, but if they want anything beyond that, they will basically be "the help" instead of me hiring strangers, and when they turn 18, they will be kicked out of the house to fend for themselves whether they are ready or not. Hell, if I get rich and have kids, I will purposely make their lives even harder than if we were poor.

It was a shock to me when I learned that studying and working to put myself through a fancy private college in order to obtain a "good career" and making lots of money didn't make me happy at all and in fact made me depressed. Thats not exactly a "great" solution either. Past examples of people doing this like Manna Musa caused decades long multi nation recessions and chaos from the influx of wealth transfer. @David For me it seems like Bezos is obsessed with the chase itself, Elon seems to be in love with a final outcome, and Gates seems motivated purely by power. I feel like their drive and motivation are on entirely different levels than the typical person. Where one person could move on without success, these fellas will lose sleep for days until they succeed, and the fruit inevitably comes pouring in. Or they're aliens. A lot of philanthropy is just investments with strings attached btw. They often get an ROI one way or another.

Can't feel sorry for the 1%. I've been homeless for years in my teens. I've eaten out of dumpsters. I've gone days at a time without food. Having been to one of these so called upper class schools, I would concur with this. The school was a place where all the students were conditioned to be part of this society. No critical thinking, no individualism, no differences. My wife met my school friends at a party once and could not believe how they were so similar in manner and speech. They do live in a little bubble and are depressed, living a pointless life. And money does not bring you happiness. There is some amazing research on how you seem to lead to psychopathic tendencies to become super rich. It is unnatural to want to dominate and control other people, but we are made to look at that as normal. Especially here in the UK, where we are born to sing God save the queen. And we are taught that the only sovereign being is the monarch. Every human being on this planet is soveriegn and every human being has the right to exist without explotation and propoganda. When I worked for a "big" pharmaceutical company they had an antidepressant that worked for obsessive compulsive disorder. The medication was "effective" for treating hoarding. My hypothesis is that the rich hoard money while people hoard things too. Both suffer from the pain of OCD ....no one talks about. They have based their identity and self worth on this status, and their security is at stake. That's what this would make them walk away from. I don't think they all know yet their identity and worth isn't measured there, this is often an unconscious and primal fear. They are human and some will and some won't be aware of it while it does this. Even those of other class groups fall into these thoughts and feelings, and not everyone is aware of it. Many lower income people feel defined in their work, and so losing it can trigger identity crisis. When they unlocked this achievement the game changed, and walking away has a bloody awful "safety net". Not only is there no sure security, but who is going to accept them amongst their group? All the groups are divided and angry at each other even though circumstances can change and they can't trust other billionaires either, can they? Once famous it's even harder. Funny enough money hasn't assured much at all. However I like the ideal that if they wanted a way out, this could have been one of them. If the safety net was universally more helpful and sustainable, rebalancing could be more available. Perhaps the whole spectrum would benefit.

Anyone who has studied even a bit of psychology knows that personalities in the Sociopath/ Psychopath categories are found in the highest concentration within the corporate world and politics. Over 25 years ago I heard that although Americans on average were 5 times richer than most people in the world we were some of the most miserable people. I learned than that money is not the root to happiness. I've also heard a lot of people who lived alone in mansions were high risks for suicide. Exactly, I've always believed being true to ourselves and following our heart wherever it may lead is the key to living and being happy, then you can be whether wealthy or not. It's the reason I've been able to be happier than anyone I've known despite the most challenging of times (and these were more challenging than most people will ever have to go through in a lifetime and beyond imagination) because that's exactly what I did. It's when people started to interfere with that, actively making it impossible for me to do that anymore it became a very different story although I still tried and try to do it anywhere I can. I don't think it is all of society that chases wealth and wants to knock about with the elite. It is not my greatest desire. In fact, I cannot think of anything worse. I would not hang around with Bezos if you paid me. I try to stay away from toxic people like that. The animal side of us does desire / crave fats, sugar and to horde supplies but I agree with what the Buddhist say. Getting rid of all these desires, trusting the universe and throwing yourself to the wind is the true key to happiness. Maybe this is the next stage in our evolution? I think more people might come to this conclusion if they stopped watching TV and buying into the bs they are peddling.

Anyone (including myself) who has ever experienced hunger, homelessness, limited access to healthcare and all the perils that come with these conditions will tell you that they'd take wealth and misery any day over poverty and said misery. I'll drown my sorrows in some champagne and Caviar in a hot tub in a glorious mansion, overlooking a fabulous view of nature or whatever. Just saying.

I lived the life of a millionaire,not billionaire! And I hated it! The people are plastic, false, on another planet. I was brought up on a council estate, grew up, lived in a mansion in the country and ended up walking away from that boring life. I hated having everything I needed handed to me for nothing! I ended up living on the street's and it was very interesting. Never bored the homeless people are so giving it is unbelievable. The homeless are the most caring and giving people I have ever met . A homeless person will give a stranger the shirt of there backs if you asked them. Seriously! They will feed you and give you there last penny. So yes Mr brand you are correct. I've lived that life and it is shit! I'm not homeless anymore but I still live from day to day because it gets me out of bed and makes me go out and find food...I also go busking with my guitar and make a few pound to get food ! I only make enough money to get by that day. I don't get greedy!

I have a young lady that busses at the restaurant I work at and had detention the other day for not having her homework done due to her grandma she lives with can’t afford internet and homework has to be done on her laptop. So ridiculous! Punishing someone for not being able to afford Internet. She is not the only one. The elite can help these kids with situations like this for instance. A struggling single mom that cooks in restaurant looked into her detention and we are figuring out how this could be rectified. It takes a village. If they would stop worrying about who’s going to take advantage of them and just do good things they wouldn’t have to worry so much.

After that I focused more on my family at home... however I have helped the occasional friend and family completely free after that. They usually fed me though and gave me non expected gifts.
