I was at a fancy restaurant and they we weren’t on our phones we were all relaxing talking (my brother my father and I) some regular Italian came up to us and started talkin and we talked a few times in between before he left. All said and done he left we said bye. He paid for our billi was so surprised it was like 320$ for all of us

I guided many young folks at my previous job - having been there 28.5 years. ON the day I was leaving because I and many others were laid off (the plant eventually closed), all these young folks came and THANKED me for providing financial advisement and PUSHING THEM to GET into the company's 401K. Each bragged how much money they had saved...and you could tell they were proud. THAT event was VERY satisfying.....and getting a 39 week severance package with health coverage.... Yes, I am working again.

It’s great to write checks but I can’t explain the overwhelming feeling of peace when I buy lunch for a homeless person and eat with them. The conversations I’ve had are something I treasure more than anything. And it costs $10.

@@dianecelento4974 That’s a great question. I don’t know if there are any that stick out in particular. I think it’s experience that I remember, more so than the words that were exchanged. They were content, wise, and in many cases genuinely happy. I just found it fascinating that so many people in what I would consider “tough spots” didn’t act like it. And on the other hand I know so many people with more money than they know what to do with that are full of bitterness. Not saying money is evil, that’s a fallacy. I just think it’s interesting that money sort of becomes irrelevant on the scale of happiness or contentment. Take care

But even wealthy people eat garbage then use up medical resources to fix the problem they created. Anyone that has financial security should not be complaining.

This might sound stupid, but I would personally go on as many road trips as time would allow and completely randomly give and help broke strangers. Imagine the feeling of walking into walmart in the poorest area of the county and walking down to every register for about 10 minutes paying for everyone's groceries - you'd make their MONTH. This past december just before christmas, we went to a restaurant and our bill was about $34, we left $80 on the table, we didn't get to see her face, but it just feels so good to know you're making someone's day or week.

those are great things to do, but in the grand scheme of things it doesn't change their life trajectory. what would be great would be to give strangers money, but also teach them a little bit about basic personal finance and compound interest. a simple compound interest calculator example is what really made it click for me. an example such as 10k invested each year for 40 years at a 7% return ends up being worth $2,136,095. 10's of millions of people in the US can afford to invest 10k a year, but very few of them actually do so, because of fear or simply not knowing what they're missing out on.

There’s so many things a person could do in this position...help repair homes for the elderly, build ramps for the disabled, buy Christmas gifts for kids that wouldn’t have a Christmas otherwise, have holiday dinners for the homeless, poor or elderly and cook and help serve it, sponsor homes for people recovering from addictions or domestic violence and help mentor those people,....I wish this was my problem. I don’t have a lot to give but I still try to little things that sometimes aren’t even about money. A few weeks ago, the line was seriously slow at a little grocery store I was in. There were three guys that looked like they had just got off work and was tired and only had a few items. I was ahead of them line but I insisted they go first. They were so appreciative and just kept thanking me...and it was such a small thing...but I really didn’t have much extra money that week and that was my small act of kindness. Sometimes I’ll give a child begging for a candy bar just five bucks...that’s a little tricky..you have to okay it with the parent..but you can often tell when that parent just doesn’t have it as opposed to they just don’t want their child to have it. But I don’t judge..I just don’t. Once a woman was paying in change for cigarettes in front of me in line and you could tell she had a super hard life, probably on drugs, but I bought those. It may have been the only kindness shown to her in a year...who knows. I try to be observant and if there’s some small thing I can do, I step up and do it. I can’t do much, because I’m not in that position, but these small things help me, and people are very appreciative of kindness.

I was in a similar situation , having paid my house off and it really was fun logging in each week and seeing where the money went, then I got bored as well once it was paid off. After a few months I started investing in dividend stocks with a new goal The goal was to cover my phone, electric, gas , water and property tax bills. All with dividend money. Now I am not only debt free , but I am bill free and I have a new goal which may take me a 3-5 more years but that goal is simply to bring in 4000 a month in dividend income at my current investing rate. To get hands on with my giving I started volunteering for Habitat for Humanity actually building the homes instead of writing a check. That was so rewarding that now I'm an electrician, and my "retirement" still involves me working 3 days a week, more if it's a project for a friend or a big safety issue. Find your passion and work becomes play!

I was only 39 and I felt as if I already beat the game with too much time left. It’s really really weird. It feels just like buying a video game and beating the game in a week, yet, you can’t buy another game, and you’re just replaying a game over and over that gets boring.

This caller’s situation is very real. I am in a similar spot. I really feel like my life was more satisfying when I was making 50k a year and trying to figure out how to achieve and get the things I want. It is not as simple as just giving the money away. It is like you live most of your life with money being the limiting factor as to what you can do. Say for example you like playing golf and you want new clubs. You might search around for used ones, do some trading, maybe some side work so you can get the clubs you want, The whole process is so satisfying. You appreciate things more when you have to work and plan for them. When you can just write a check for anything it really takes the enjoyment out of it. Being comfortable and stress free is nice but it really sucks the fun out of hobbies and goals.

I was in the same situation as he was about 15 yrs ago at 25. It was great, but was unfulfilled and needed something more. Now 15yrs later after taking a step back and looking at life differently has made a difference. The time you have on your hands is I think the biggest issue for most in this situation. Iwent from working multiple jobs/businesses after and during college to having all the time in the world. It's a completely different world. I focus on my health daily along with spending time with family and friends.

When I reached that stage, I started giving to an animal shelter. One that I visit and where I can see in person what they do to help animals. Seeing the animals rescued, treated and saved makes me so happy. Earning money is even more rewarding now that it is used directly for something like that.

I've been having a fairly hard year, disconnected from my profession of physical therapy since job loss and a clinic closure 5 months ago. Anxious about my career, student loans, and lack of meaningful work in my life. This video helped my optimism so much today. I'm interviewing for a job in a city I like and when I get there, hope to volunteer or work part time at the local bike store as well. I've got my fingers crossed, some deep breaths, and some hope to get back to helping people.

Another idea: pick a church school that you believe in, and start sponsoring students whose families want to send their kids there, but can’t afford it. Even if all you do is pay part, or even most of the tuition, and have the parents pay what they can, then go volunteer at the school and watch those kids blossom. THAT is amazing, and someday I would love to be able to do it.

Random acts of kindness man! You have the ability to help those who are hard working and hard pressed but can't pay their mortgage. Maybe find people outside of your community that need a hand until they can get back on track. So much good you can do that's not selfish. What an awesome and rare problem to have during these tough times. I feel privileged to be debt free and able to help those who need it. I'm 48 and I'm in very good financial shape too. I've realized that I think I know my future based upon my phone games.... every game I play, I hoarde, I've quit a couple of them and I had a ton of in-game money when I quit. At least I'll be able to pass something on.
