Money and prestige doesn't matter much (if at all) during apocalyptic times. And brute force does win out when there's no social contract or law and order to appeal to. It does strike me as pretty damn antisocial how the wealthiest among us plan to cut and run when the SHTF, but not too surprising. And I don't think it will work out how they'd like to imagine. Isn't the argument that planned obsolescence is necessary to continue supplying work to people? Kind of a "The devil finds work for idle hands" outlook, which I think there is some truth to. I think it's probably gotten out of hand, and I'm still mad about the whole lightbulb situation in the US. Essentially we blockaded improvements to incandescent light bulbs because of planned obsolescence, and recently banned their sale outright for environmentalist reasons, since they weren't as efficient as LED light bulbs. But the problem is that if we didn't blockade improvements to incandescent light bulbs they would be MORE efficient than LED. It's all just so frustrating.

As far as I can figure the only real solution to situation where all the institutions and infrastructure had collapsed would be to assemble a community of highly competent people who are like-minded. There would need to be an underlying mission statement to the group's existence that supersedes any individual's interests to help avoid and control in-group conflicts. If a billionaire thought they would be able to do it while remaining the king in his castle, I think he'd be lucky to survive the first year. The whole reason behind such a compound or bunker would be to survive the collapse of the infrastructure that elevated him or her to their position. Without that infrastructure, he would be just some random guy, probably incapable of asserting dominance in the new circumstances. So the idea would be to set up a village, not a hotel with employees. You would want people with critical skills like doctors, engineers, mechanics, etc who cooperate because of shared goals. The sorts of commodities you would want to have accumulated would be things that would be inherently useful in a disaster situation: fuel, canned goods, weapons/ammunition, medicine, materials that are normally perishable so would quickly run out. Gold would be near worthless in a world where survival is a struggle.

The processes described sounds a lot like what happened in Western Europe after the collapse of the Western Roman Empire. Mark, during the Cuban missile crisis and the heights of the Cold War many people of most economic situations were building underground bunkers. Maybe a deep dive into the human condition …would help you understand human behavior ….. and remove some of the mystery for you.
