I'm a truck driver and most tunnels, bridges and big cities don't allow hazmat loads to go through them for safety reasons. Obviously a tanker truck delivering fuel to a big city can go in but they have to go around bridges and tunnels. You wouldn't want to be in a tunnel with a tanker truck and an accident happens. the whole tunnel could be destroyed.

I came here to say this. As a trucker I can confirm Alliance Ohio is correct.

Glad you said that driver. Driver myself and honestly if people would use a tad bit of common sense the answer would be obvious. If, God forbid, a tanker were to roll, the LAST place you would want it rolling and possibly exploding is inside a tunnel surrounded by dozens of other drivers...right? Hence why HAZMAT not allowed inside a lot of tunnel underpasses

My brother is a trucker, who once had a Hazmat rating. He said Hazmat routes are very restricted for safety reasons. In rare cases where there are no Hazmat rated bypass routes, the shutdown and escort procedure is used. The tunnel itself may exist because it provided a Hazmat rated route through the area. The fact that Hazmat rated routes are safer for all traffic is a feature. The historical preservation argument is less volatile than Hazmat safety. Either way a deadly road was removed from use. Great work!

True. Allowing haz-mat loads through the tunnel is infinitely safer than going over "Massacre Mountain" on the old 25E, which I did in 1987. Good riddance to it - and the fact that the old trace of the Wilderness Road has been restored for a few miles is just a cool side benefit.

@@michaelarrowood4315 agreed. My wife had to go over it every day for classes at LMU. We both have seen many terrible accidents as well. I do miss that little store to on the right side of Cujo's Cave. Strangely, most local Bell Co. people had never been through CC. Have a nice day everyone. 🤘

As a former Hazmat truck driver I can say that having a dedicated lane through a tunnel makes perfect sense. That way you can plan for clean up if an accident occurs. Can you imagine how disastrous a spill of hazardous chemicals would be inside of a tunnel with potentially trapped cars and people? Anyway, GREAT video! I'm so happy to have found this. Now go listen to David Rawling's Cumberland Gap. :)

My mother's family came to Kentucky with Daniel Boone through the Gap. She was born in Owensboro. After fighting in the Revolutionary war my dad's family got land grants in east Tennessee. They later moved north into Appalachian Kentucky. He was born in Lee County. I was born in England but that is another story. Anyway thanks for doing this video. It is quite well done and very entertaining. Since watching a Sasquatch run through the forests east of Yellowstone some years ago I know that it is not a conspiracy theory. A brother (both of us retired from university professorships soooo....) watched with me. I won't soon forget. We observed it from about 50 yards for at least 30 seconds before it saw us and disappeared. Ahhhh, my kingdom for a camera! If it had decided to chase us running away would have been folly. My folks were quite familiar with the Hairy Man stories of the south. The cave stories are also amazing. Here in Utah we have a huge cavern known as Timpanogos Cave. You should visit. Again, thanks for the fine work. I subscribed!

My grandmother and great-grandmother used to babysit Lee Majors in the 40s. They lived in Cumberland Gap, Tennessee. I've been down there many times, it's absolutely gorgeous down there. The Union held the Gap most of the war. My grandmother used to find bullets as a child in the 1930s that were from the Civil War. I've got a couple of them.

I had never heard of the Cumberland Gap National Park until last night. My wife and I will be arriving in the Smoky Mountain area of Tennessee on 13 March 2024 to celebrate my 60th birthday.(My actual birthday will be on 16 March). I am VERY excited that my siblings and my daughter will come to celebrate my birthday with me on Saturday. Since my wife and I will be arriving a few days before they will, I was looking at my atlas to see some nearby places that we could visit before they arrive. It seems like a very nice place to visit.

You asked at about 6 minutes..." If you're not from Kentucky, have you ever heard of the Cumberland Gap ?" Wow, I was puzzled at this question. I am 66 yrs. old...have never lived in Kentucky...but I've known about the Cumberland Gap since I was a kid. I learned about it in American History class and in Geography class and by reading and hearing about our early History from many other sources. To me, that question is about as odd as asking if anyone who was raised in this Country does not know who George Washington or Abraham Lincoln was. What does this say about the educational standards in this country...? Other than that weird question, I always enjoy seeing the beautiful country in Kentucky. My early ancestors lived in Kentucky for a short while back in the late 1700's before going on into Illinois and then down here to finally settle along the beautiful White river in North Central Arkansas in the foothills of the Ozarks.

Thomas....Yep, that's about right...very little Geography is taught anymore and American History must be outlawed by now...it just isn't P.C. to learn about this great country's founding and traditions...sad...sad for the students that grow up to become adults that know so very little or have even less appreciation for what so many people had to go through to make this nation great and prosperous. And yes...the Government has blood on it's hands...it isn't perfect...but that's called Life...you learn as you go..hopefully. Do you remember when Jay Leno used to go out on the streets and ask people real simple geography questions or other real easy questions and very few had any idea what he was asking...like...what Country is our neighbor South of the border..or who is our neighbor to the North ? It was incredible..and pathetic...how these young people who thought they were so cool..just showed how dumb they really were. Mark Dice used to do this a lot, too, and got the same idiotic and stupid and...ignorant...answers...or just totally blank looks....incredible. .!!

I am from Chicago and am 62 years old-as a teen my family and I traveled 2 times to the Smokies and Tennessee,Kentucky and North Carolina. I heard of the Cumberland Gap and was excited that we traveled thru it in the early 1970s. That was such a scenic area. Since Daniel Boone was a big thing on T.V. in my youth and I did actually read books(a lost art these days) I knew about the Cumberland gap. It was like the moon landing in colonial days. It opened up Virginia to the west. "In this spot Dan'l Boone killed a bar." or words to that effect.

SO FUNNY !!!! hazmat warning is for transport trucks that are carrying hazmat material LIKE fuel tankers !! These truckers need an escort and shut down the tunnel for the fuel truck to SAFELY pass through. ... so NO accidents ,no terrorist can destroy..My family from Jonesville. The 'old road' had a beautiful cave on top called Cujo's it had a 'frozen water fall and was really cool inside. Beautiful road but trucker's could usually only go 15MPH up hill ( or LESS) and slower down the mountain and traffic would back up for 1/2 mile or more. And YES cancer has jumped my first cousin died from cancer they traced to water there.He was non drinker non smoker. Caves in the area are like the 1's in Mammoth caves.

At the Eisenhower tunnel in Colorado, they make hazmat trucks take the old road over Loveland Pass, when it's open, but, in the winter, Loveland Pass is often closed, so when the pass is closed, they escort hazmat trucks through the tunnel just like they do at the Cumberland Tunnel. It's actually quite common for large tunnels, as a gasoline tanker fire in a tunnel would be disastrous.

The hazmat warning is because any 18 wheelers hauling gas or toxic liquids has to be escorted through the tunnel and when the sign says hazmat warning all traffic has to stop and wait until the escort is done.

bill, when i was a child 11/12 yrs old, my dad/mom took us to cumberland gap to see the moonbow or permanent rainbow at the falls....i remember there being a pony ride across the street from where you could go in the water above the falls. Lots of children & people there that day, it was in the 1960's. My sister wanted to go in the water, so we stopped above the falls. We went in the water, the stones were very slippery from moss, so i got out. My sister went in further out & she fell & was in danger of drowning being swept by the water current down towards the falls. Mom started yelling & a young boy that was there grabbed my sister as she floated past him. She was able to safely get out of the water. I remember it being very scenic & beautiful there. That's all i remember. My sister was nine yrs old at the time.

Excellent content. I am from Bell county and attended LMU back in the day before the tunnel was put in. Those living today can not imagine (actually I had blocked it out) how scary that old road actually was. During the winter it was literally terrifying. The cruvy curvy TWO LANE road (they had passing lanes to a limited extent). Accidents were an extremely common occurrence. Unfortunately so we're deaths. I am the first to admit that there have been some very bizarre happenings, some of which I have witnessed with my own two eyes. And I believe that they should have left the old road due to the fact that it is as much historic as the old path during the horse and buggy days. However, I do believe that safety was one of their main concerns during the planning and building of the tunnel. Oh BTW:. If one speeds or even changes lanes in the tunnel, one can expect a big ticket in the mail. One of the reasons given for the cameras. I have known this to happen to a couple of people through the years.

Both songs titled "Cumberland Gap" tell 2 different stories but both have despairing underlaying themes. So it sparked an interest to learn more about this historical place. These aren't the only songs written about the Cumberland Gap, but it is interesting that 2 of the most highly respected and decorated Americana musicians release a Cumberland Gap themed song at the same time. Also, despite receiving thousands of pages of documents through FOIA from the EFLHD (Eastern Federal Lands and Highway Division) and the NPS concerning the construction and cost of the tunnel, it still did not add up to the price tag of $280,000,000. They could not (or would not) provide any information whatsoever concerning Parsons Brinckerhoff's involvement in the tunnel despite repeated requests. Also, a pilot bore was conducted in 1985 that certainly showed the geological issues facing any tunnel construction in that area. I am flattered my website was such a focus of your video, but the tongue-in-cheek "tin foil hat" approach you've taken with my material is unfortunate. As anyone who has visited my site knows, I've worked hard to provide accurate sourcing for the material I've written about. As you know, it takes time, effort, and gas money to develop and work on stories. It would have been nice to have been mentioned in the credits, especially since my "underground entrance" photo that took several hours to find, was used. :) Your readers can find the other side to the story at my blog at www.everybodyhatescharlie.com Thank you for allowing me to present my side.

We did a lot of work along the Alaskan Way Viaduct, the underground utilities and drainage for Safeco Field, 5th Avenue Parking Garage, etc. I really miss it!

Boy oh boy can I ever relate to your video Sir, I grew up in Powell valley / Cumberland gap, I was born with my bones in both forearms fused together and it isn't hereditary, hence radiation .... I've seen undeniable UFOs , heard recent stories of Bigfoot from family and friends as I have my own experiences.... I've been inside cudos cave several times, when it was open to the public and when it wasn't... The whole area is littered with caves as my friends and I use to be avid cave explorers.. I used to hear rumbling and machine sounds coming from the mountain when I was a kid and it wasn't the mines either as that was a separate sound.... I could go on and on with stories but as you see in not the greatest typist.. Lol. But it is indeed a very mysterious area .. I live in Michigan now but go there every year for a vacation.. I'm very thankful to have grown up there .. PS... Did you know that whole Middlesboro is listed as a national USGS meteor impact crater ? And the whole area has a giant underground lake... Very unique place indeed

Yeah, Haz-Mat not that rare. When I'd drive the motorhome south on I-95 through Baltimore -- well, you couldn't go through Baltimore! None of the tunnels allowed even simple propane tanks. We had to divert to the east and cross over the FS Key Bridge -- a scary proposition with a high-profile vehicle in high winds. I live in a small town in CT a couple of miles from I-84 and was in Emergency Services for many decades. During one of the training courses the instructor mentioned that if we knew what was going through our town on a daily basis we'd all move! BTW, we're all done with I-95. We head south on I-81 and I-77 now. A much calmer ride. Funny that they are spending so much on the reclamation at Cumberland. The old PA Turnpike has a number of closed road sections and large tunnels that were just bypassed and abandoned. Nature is reclaiming it all by itself without Government intervention!

On the right side of each tunnel there is 1 door as can be seen at 14:20 in the video. These door's go into the cave that the tunnel bisect's. All the caves in the park including the tunnel caves are all part of a mapping project by the cave research foundation, a group of volunteers that explore and map every square inch of the cave's in the park. If the park had something to hide it would not let these people explore the cave's unsupervised. Also the water from Cudjo's cave only supplies the town of Cumberland gap and LMU.

I haven't looked into all of the members of CRF, but I do know that one of their members, Bill Wilder, has a very colorful background. Formerly with Lockheed Martin doing Superfund cleanup work, his later company Pro2Serve, is a "tech and engineering firm dedicated to providing critical infrastructure engineering services in support of nation's security." From his Linkedin profile: "Part of team involved in conceptual design and site investigations for new low-level radioactive and mixed waste CERCLA waste disposal facility for contaminated D&D and soils remedial action waste streams on the Oak Ridge Reservation." I'm sure his interest in cave mapping is all coincidence with what he does professionally, but I will continue to remain skeptical of the Cave Research Foundation's true intentions.

Now the tunnel I remember the threats when it opened. I also remember alot of people afraid to drive thru because of what it was on top of,the caves. They escort the trucks through one at a time and it takes at least 20 -30mins per truck 10 for normal traffic. When I asked why so long a few years ago (last time I went through) I was told trucks have to go slower to be safer.??? I think they might be off pumping liquid form Oakridge into the caves.

It does NOT take 20-30 min per truck. I live in TN and work in Middlesboro - I go through that tunnel twice a day. When you say 20-30 minutes, 10 for "normal" traffic, what kind of traffic are you talking about 20-30 minutes? Unless there's a big wreck (one happened in the northbound lane side about 2 weeks ago) shutting it down, or a major detour from I-75 like what happened a couple of years ago due to a landslide, our traffic is always "normal" (light). The procedure is the same and takes the same amount of time per truck. They pull off and into the Haz-Mat lane, signs flash letting traffic know to clear the tunnel. An escort follows the truck (tanker) and it's 4,752 feet long - less than a mile. How slow would a truck have to be going for it to take 20-30 minutes?

For years coal mining in Appalachia was largely unregulated thus the Chromium 6 in the water. Routing trucks from the Ohio Valley to the South East by way of US 25 E reduces congestion in Knoxville TN and cuts 12 miles off your trip. Lastly very few Haz Mat loads traverse tunnels anywhere in the US. Haz Mat escorts allow transportation to use the tunnels and keep the motoring public safe on the highway. Other than a great engineering/mining achievements (did I mention the 75-foot waterfall they found?), it's just as it appears - a great big tunnel about 9/10 of a mile long. :)

You mentioned that the Cumberland Tunnel is only one of two tunnels where you can cross a state border by car (about 1:30). But I beg to differ: both the Holland Tunnel and the Lincoln Tunnel are car tunnels connecting New Jersey with New York. You cross from one state to the other in the middle of each tunnel.

The new tunnel they built in Louisville ky doesn't allow hazmat either. Maybe they are that worried about crashes and spills into the drains in the tunnels.

I live in Cumberland Gap and I have lived in middlesboro for years. The chromium that is in the water is from a tannery that caught fire. Actually a side building that had tons of chromium in it caught fire and it actually covered the whole town in a thick layer of chromium ash. There was a big deal about it for awhile but they covered it up and swept it under the rug. Paid the doctors off and now days no one talks about what's wrong with the kids, mentally and physically.

So I'm watching from the future, so cool. I remember when the Cumberland Gap tunnel opened, I was 16 and can still remember driving through it for the first time. It was the first tunnel I had ever been through and it was just a memory I will never forget. Cumberland gap is absolutely gorgeous but you're right, it doesn't get the visitors you think it should or would and that is weird!! There is a lot of UFO sightings around the Gap and along all of Appalachia.

I live in Bell county now and I actually work in Middlesboro though I'm not originally from the area. I've never been an outdoorsy person but I have been to the park and the overlook. It's quite a view. I've never really given the tunnel much thought but the video does make me question a few things. I've been through it multiple times and it does have that "militaristic" feel to it. Especially with the security and such. I've heard that in the event of a nuclear disaster it could be used as a bunker. This is just hearsay of course. I've also heard that they have a VERY strict 45mph rule and that just 1mph over will result in a ticket. Same with changing lanes but I see people doing both all the time. I never really gave the haz-mat much thought but I feel like it makes sense. Keeping others away from hazardous material would help to prevent a major incident. My guess would be because of the park and nearby forests, they would want to prevent anything from spreading to the environment (though how would it with such a large tunnel?) It's a very interesting and neat tunnel to say the least. I always enjoy looking at those HUGE fans they have on the ceilings. They almost resemble airliner engines. I've noticed also on the inside that there are doors and I wonder just how one could go about getting a tour on the inside or if it's even possible? Perhaps that could be something to look into?

Try contacting them to see if you can get a tour. www.cgtunnel.com/contact.html As far as the fan's go they keep carbon dioxide from building up inside, and fresh air moving because of the tunnel length.

As of last year as of last years Hazmat trucks are not allowed to go through tunnels therefore they have to exit or wait for an escort to run them through the tunnels. If they have explosives or any other combustible products they have to find an alternate route, other wise most haz-mat vehicles can proceed after a D.O.T check so then tunnel personal know what to tell 911 or they can have a chem track truck on hand or haz mat clean up along with other fire or EMS vehicles in case of leak, spill, or fire.

Bear Running With Wolves Great comment and thanks for watching! Other comparable tunnels in size or importance aren’t so regulated. Do you know why this one is? I’m sure it’s not the only one, but there has to be a reason. For example, on I40 there’s a huge tunnel in NC, but without all of the Hazmat precautions. Again, thanks for watching! Bill
@toyotaalltheway1
@toyotaalltheway1 6 жыл бұрын
No idea why they pick certain tunnels, but the eisenhower tunnels in colorado on I-70 do the same thing. Haz-mat trucks have to use the loveland pass to go around the tunnels. When the pass is closed, haz-mat trucks park next to the tunnel and every hour it is closed, the trucks go through, and then reopened to normal traffic.
@codyvillines2289
@codyvillines2289 6 жыл бұрын
The other tunnels usually have an alternate route. If you pay attention to the road signs there will be a sign somewhere before the alternate route that tells haz mat truckers what route to take. Its also a law that haz mat cannot go through major metropolitan areas. There will be a sign before the city directing a haz mat load to a loop or bypass around the city. I used to drive haz mat.
