Whirlpool Side by Side Refrigerator Not Cooling - Freezer Not Freezing

In this video I show you how to troubleshoot a Whirlpool Side by Side Refrigerator that is not freezing correctly but the fridge section is cooling properly.
This is pretty much the opposite of a defrost problem where the freezer is too cold and not defrosting. This has to do with the freezer not being cold enough. In this case the compressor is not running long enough to bring the freezer temps down to where they need to be.
Dirty condenser coils or a compressor fan that has stopped running will be the most probable cause. The room temperature air the refrigerator is running in could also be the issue.
You will learn alot of information from this video. The more knowledge you have when you begin troubleshooting the better off you will be when you are diagnosing a refrigerator cooling problem.

Almost twenty years of dog hair and country dust and I’d never thought of looking underneath to clean around the coils. I wish I had taken a picture. As soon as I cleaned it out I could feel air circulating out the front. Who knew? Lol The next morning my ice cream was once again frozen. Thanks so much!

Great Videos Bill! I have a side by side Kitchenaid fridge/freezer and one morning I noticed water all over my floor. Both sides completely warm overnight and most of the food had thawed. Neither Compressor OR Fan were working. Now this fridge has a newer motherboard/digital and they only way to confirm the problem was to completely disconnect the motherboard (Taking that out of the loop) and tricking the Compressor /Fan by placing 120 v to the return wiring bundle from where it plugs into the Motherboard. The Red and Black wire matching the two connecting to the Compressor. As soon as power was attached, both compressor and fan started working just fine. I ordered a new motherboard from Whirlpool for $316.00 and saved me $1800.00 on a new fridge. Please make a video showing this because the motherboard showed no obvious signs of failure and no one shows this as the cause in any video. Mostly they show swapping out the compressor relay or other things besides the motherboard or Jazz board as some have called it. Thanks!

Great in-depth tips, thank you! It helped me think about my current troubleshooting case more deeply... specifically, I didn’t put the back cover back on this fridge while testing it. This is preventing the compressor fan from pulling air across the compressor coils, and might explain why I can’t find any more defective parts (replaced a defective freezer temp. sensor), but it still doesn’t cool enough in the freezer.

Bill your videos & explanations of fault finding of refrigerators are brilliant & I wanted to personally thank you for all the information that you share freely with everyone. In this day & age there are too many people that just want to take & are not prepared to give. Can you please help me out with an issue I have with my side by side Whirlpool Refrigerator Model 6ED25DQXFW00. The Freezer section is fine however the fridge part is not cold enough. I can confirm that the evaporator fan in the freezer is operating ok & cold air is entering the fridge for a period of time. Initially, I thought I had a faulty diffuser as the flap was not allowing cold air into the fridge so I replaced it with a new one. My issue is that the flap is not opening to allow the cold air into the fridge as it is generally closed. Occasionally, I have to manually insert a knife into the diffuser from the fridge side to slightly open the flap. Could I have a faulty Refrigerator Thermostat? Once again many thanks!

I see most of the posts/comments are 2-5 years old so...hope you're still online and available to answer any questions we consumers might have, Bill. We have a Whirlpool Side-by-Side InverterPlus Refrigerator/Freezer (Model 7S21 FNI SL) that we purchased second-hand; ever since Day #1, the freezer unit only frosts over when I use the magic "Quick Freeze" option on the temperature/control module. The fridge works fine - or seems to - but (as you say) the freezer "doesn't know what temperature it's supposed to be at." I could see any/all of the diagnostic problems you've addressed being part of the anomaly but "it DOES actually frost over when I hit the magic asterisk (*) on that control on the outside freezer door. To be sure, I'm not really expecting an answer anytime soon, but...I thought this better than paying $200-300 for some half-baked technician(s) to come here and tell us it's outta freon (which I know it ain't if the shelves are freezing under "Quick Freeze" mode. Like they say, I was born at night...but not LAST night. Your best guess is what I'll take to the bank, Sir - I'm not an electronics or even similarly functional repairman, by any stretch; so anything you have to offer as a solution is great with me. thanks bill, good info i have the soft icecream problem 'checked timer ,heat coil,fans are running, motor runs cleaned all coils,but only 1/2 the inside coil ends up frozen,so im thinking it probly needs more freon ,thanks for your help

Bill: Your videos are great! Please help, our freezer freezes off and on. When not working we turn the refrigerator knob off and back on. It then starts, sometime great other times start and stops. Superb explanation for a unique problem...super educative... I have a 15 year old LG , have a feeling that evaporator fan has slowed down ...as temperatures are ok in freezer n fridge, but feel cold air flow into fridge is lesser than before...maybe fan rpm is down...??? Had a small flood on my back patio and mine is on the back patio. Stopped freezing. Pulled out today, hecked the back and bottom. Looked ok. Running blowing cool air but not freezing.

My freezer is not freezing (ice cream soft) and I noticed the compressor is very HOT, condenser coils are clean, so is it low freon that is causing the compressor to run hot (129°)?

They can get as hot as 300°f and that's normal...

Thanx for your Vida, you're very knowledgeable and helpful...I have a smilar WP side by side thats been driving me crazy for 2 months. Freezer use to get to zero and frige was at 50...after changin the following parts it is stuck at about 20 freezer and frige is still at about 45 50 I changed the damper control, frige side thermostat, evap fan and condenser fan..the evap was did have frost over the first and last coil only...it melted as soon as I unplugged the frige and defrosted as soon as I plugged it back in...buti put the cover back on and can't see how it looks now....I took a pic of it....can u please help me

question bill will a refrigerator go bad if it has been setting unplug for one year or that should not matter . I had it in storage for a year and they told me that it is probably no good anymore because it had be setting to long .

You could plug it in and see. If it has been laying on it's side the oil migrates from the compressor to the freon lines, that's bad. You would just need to stand it upright for 24 hours before you turn it on. Otherwise it shouldn't really matter if it's clean.

My whirlpool side by side was not cooling. I replaced the timer and thermostat and cleaned the evaporator. Still wasn't cooling. The door light switch which worked ok when I pushed it by hand,when I shut the door,it wasn't working. I took a coin and taped it to the door,so when I closed the door,the light went out,and the fan was blowing. It probably needs a door adjustment,but I have been using that penny for over a year,and that was all that was wrong with it. It took me a week to figure this out . Give it a try,

I am working on a big deep freezer approximately 300ltrs (1/4 compressor) the issue am having is that it not freezing inside, the suction line outside freezes and drops water everywhere initially I thought I over charged it (r600a) I started reducing the gas till it was nearly emypt still not freezing please I need your detailed help

Evaporator fan works sometimes, and sometimes not, i gave the fan a spin with my finger, and it started to run. And the frig gets cold, and the freezer works great But i didnt see anything blocking the fan from spinning

Freezer is not cooling properly, as you stated, ice cream melts and is just not cold enough..on the other side of the fridge it actually is somewhat just cold enough for food not to go bad right away. also wished it would be cooler as well. please help , what could it be?

yeah bill the back (bottom part only the last couple of coils) were frozen.. so i changed out the bottom sensor and the heat/defrost part at the bottom end of the coild.. on monday today is wednesday.. now the ice maker isn't making any ice it used to before, and i really don't see any change in tempeture.. i put a tray of water as a test to see if it would freeze on the bottom tray of the freezer side..it has not turned to ice yet after 48 hours...should i just throw the fridge away...its driving me crazy..
