(I did open/take off the back cover and the freezer in-cover.) He plug the power..the compressor start working ..Ice was bild in the freezer unit.. all looks SO good for 5-10 min..then we hear the "click-noise" and in compressor was VERY hot and die..!!! He said: need to replace the compressor..and since it's R12 it need to be replaced to R134.. COST OF REPLACING PARTS (replace my FGV-130A compressor) will be about $400$.!!! he said ..better get new fridge. on Friday and Saterday Here in ISRAEL ALL CLOSED I put about 20 frozen water bottels in the fridge and in the frezzer to get over the weekend,open the fridge Only 2 times in 26 hours ..was hopping that food will stay OK over the weekend W/O working compressor ...so on Sunday I was staying all night looking true youtube ..and got this SO GOOD EXPLAINED VIDEO.....all got SO CLEAR. In the morning I got my Multimeter checked all the point you show in the video....BOOM = the PTC RELAY the Start leg =OK the RUN leg=disconect=OL "no contact. 1 hour to run and get the part...install and it all 100% BACK TO NORMAL WORK...with pay off $10 and ONE EXCELENT GREAT VIDEO WITH good explanation Up To Point what need to check and see. Thanks Bill, with your help i troubleshot n fixed a fridge with a bad starter relay. I recently bought an LG stainless fridge 4 yrs old French door bottom drawer for 25 bucks. Found they have problems and will replace compressor plus 2 evaporators, parts only. I was hoping i could install new myself but can't find a good video with detailed teaching on how to do this. I have a lot of experiance soldering copper plumbing but know this is much different. Some joints also go from copper to aluminum.

A few days ago, my Whirlpool over/under was making a repeated clicking noise. I thought it might be the defrost cycle having trouble kicking in but the coils look normal in the freezer. I ran a diagnostic force on the defrost cycle and all appeared fine. The freezer won't go below about 19 deg. F at max cool setting. I think the compressor runs rather hot and a bit noisey and I haven't heard the clicking again. Do you think I may have a leak and possibly low n freon?

Also check from each pin to ground. I just checked a no cool condition and on a whirlpool fridge and resistance from compressor pins to ground was 2 ohms. Owner had installed a Supco capacitor kit and condenser fan was also not working. Too bad! I think it's better to stick with original PTC relay and overload components because a hot compressor will trip the PTC device when hot. It's one thing to change out a compressor but quite another to replace a burned out one with all the contamination issues in the sealed system. Keep your condenser fans and evap fans healthy!

My Kenmore\Whirlpool start-relay doesn't have a capacitor. Refrigerator is keeping everything cold but I hear the overload click often. I am replacing the start-relay again after 1 year. Would a RCO410 3 in 1 Compressor Hard Start Capacitor Kit be better/stronger? Maybe the compressor is just hotter now during the summer?

Recently replaced the start relay with one not graded for my compressor. Overload failed, relay burnt out, and the red wire was damaged. How can I tell how damaged the wire is, or is replacing the wire and connectors a decent low experience job? Thanks!

Hi Bill, I love watching your videos because you are so direct with problem solving. My Whirlpool side by side refrig/freezer stop getting cold but still running. I had a tech come out and tested one wire and told me my compressor is bad and i need a new refrig. Wtf, he didn't pull anything apart to test any other wire, he packed up I paid him and he left. What can I do next?
@Your-Self5 жыл бұрын
What wire did he check, amp draw on the compressor? While the compressor is running for at least 10 minutes, check the temperature of the condenser coil. In a healthy Sealed System, the temperature of the condenser should be about 30 F above your room temperature. If the condenser temperature is the same as your room temperature, there is a leak of the refrigerant, inefficient compressor, or some other Sealed System problem. Any of these issues are very expensive to repair (up to $1000), maybe that's why the tech said you need a new fridge.

After being unplugged and plugged again it runs and cools but clicking still there,compressor works very quietly. Thanks, very clear. My fridge Kenmore Coldspot 10658785890 has a blue wire running to the side of the start relay that has only one prong. The other side of my relay has two prongs with 2 white wires going together into one of the prongs. Does it matter if these white wires go to the top or bottom prong? You show it going on the bottom prong but I THINK mine went to the top one. I forgot to get a clear picture of these connections before trying to replace these parts and now I can't remember.

Great Video! My refrigerator is making a clicking sound every second or so. The fan is trying to start but only makes quarter turn on every clicking sound. I checked the resistance on the leads of the compressor, seems to be fine electrically but no sound and not working. Changed the capacitor and overload relay, problem still the same. Thinking main control board so i checked all 4 capacitors on the board for uFs, all good there. Now i am thinking the fan motor or some other issue with the main board. Still need to check power draw on the compressor. Any suggestions Bill?

When my refrigerator is plugged into the electrical outlet behind the fridge, the fridge starts up, runs a few minutes and then the compressor shuts down. I change plugs on the same outlet, same thing. I take an extension cord and plug the fridge into an outlet in another room in the house, and the refrigerator works fine. I tried going to the electrical box and resetting the power and the outlet behind the fridge worked about 15 minutes and then the condenser shut down. Why would the fridge work fine using another electrical outlet in the house? Thank you.

Nice job in explaining on how to test a compressor if it works. My 2014 lg compressor vibrates and there’s 0.48 amps that runs through it but still my fridge does not get cold , and when I disconnect the power And do a ohms reading on the coil terminals from common to the upper left terminal which I think it’s the run it reads about 7.8 and from common to the upper right that could be start does not give me a reading and from run to start no reading. When you have some time could you please let me know what that means, thank you.
@Your-Self5 жыл бұрын
If you have an LG fridge, your compressor is probably "Linear Compressor". That's why you get ohms reading only between 2 terminals and nothing between other terminals. Linear compressors typically fail within the first 5 years and it happened to me. They can run (vibrate), but not work, and you can tell just by listening if the compressor is not doing its job. I'll be posting a video in a couple of days comparing the sound of a good Linear Compressor and a bad Linear Compressor so you can hear the difference.

Great video. My issue is my fridgidare side by side, is cooling, but not as cold as it is normally. some stuff in freezer is half frozen. So today we had 110 degree weather. Now my fridge is acting up. Cooling fine but I have frost inside freezer. Also the condenser condenser is so hot I was worried my wood floor was going to catch on fire. I suspect the overload might not be working but haven't checked it yet. My question is...if I put a temperature gun on the condenser what temp is consider above normal specification. I don't see a high and low temp rating on the name plate.

Bill, thanks for making this video. It's very clear and helpful. I have a question about the ohms readings on the relay and the overload. I got .2 on the relay and .4 on the overload. Should my readings be that different from your's? Does this indicate a problem with either part? I think I just got the fridge working again by turning the gear on the timer. After I adjusted the timer the fan started running (hasn't for the past 2 days) and after a few minutes the air blowing into the freezer feels pretty cold. Do you have a video related to the timer? Your response will be greatly appreciated.

I get basically the same thing. Overload circuit reports anywhere from 5 to 1.2 ohms. And other pins also reports resistance all over the place 11, 8 and 4. Compressor reports higher then 2.0 amps and bumps to around 12.7 amps ( from the start and run whine-dings when running and kicking in every 5 mins when the compressor clicks on. Compressor clicks on, but not sure if it should stay on all the time or shut-off and on when it needs to cool? Questions: Does the Compressors usually run all the time? Also noticed the compressor getting hot and seems like the Fan to the right is pulling air away from the compressor and it would seem more efficient if it blows cool air toward the compressor and not sure if this is wired backward (used unit)? Thinking about replacing the shutoff sensor and seeing if that helps. Update: Pulled my shutoff and PTC relay. Another video suggestion referenced shaking it and seeing if it was making noise. Mine was rattling bunches...took it apart and almost everything in the PTC feel out. PTC was Burnt and Crispy! Ordered a replacement online and looking forward to it making improvements in a couple of days.

@marc27975 жыл бұрын
That's the purpose of the AMP check . if the compressor draws to many amps on start up the overload will open (as it should) how ever the relay switches from start to run in that 5 sec's so you may have two potential problems 1 bad relay 2 bad run winding in the compressor., the tests performed in the video should point you to the true cause either/or.

I have a MayTag mzd2766gew and there was this clicking sound when it wants to start and I knew that was the relay and overload issue which I changed and everything was fine and it worked so good,I disconnected the unit from power supply just to put it back in it's original position and when I did I left it for some time and when I plugged it back to the power supply it starts and stops at immediately. If the compressor is running (feel it) and the refer section is cold but freezer not cold enough, then it's probably choked with ice. Simply defrost it. There are two ways, one where you dig into it and use a hair dryer and the other where you simply unplug it and lose a lotta food.

Wrong. Wire could short to case and it will show normal reading and it will not work. It will trip breaker and there will be perfect reading and no current at all.

Test your relay like in the video. if it doesn't read .4 on each lead, then order a new relay for $50 and replace it.

Shows how to read resistance but gives no clue as to how to interpret the data. The 2 readings are .5 of each other so he's happy. What delta would make him unhappy? So video is kinda worthless.
