Laundry (An instructional ASL video)(story)(Lesson 08)
Everyday I help my mom do the laundry. I load dirty clothes --pants, shirts, socks, and underwear into the washer. I don’t like my hearing aid. When mom isn’t looking I put it in the washer and try to look innocent. Mom finds out? She'll be mad!

Hello ASL Heroes!!! Hey, I could really use your help. If you’ve enjoyed having access to an expert in ASL you can help me continue my work for you. A small monthly donation from you would instantly make a big difference here at the studio because teachers don’t earn much and I could use some help paying for server and domain hosting for Lifeprint.com. Right now you can help out a humble (not to mention kind, caring, generous, compassionate, helpful, friendly, fair, and hard-working) ASL teacher -- just go here and a few clicks later you too will be a true “ASL Hero!” www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_s-xclick&hosted_button_id=64QMBRBXQSV6G For more donation options, see: Lifeprint.com/donate Thanks! - Dr. Bill

I love this channel and learning ASL. I wish that I could see the words behind you a little better. Some times the two of you cover up what you are teaching. Otherwise, thank you so much for all the work you do ❤❤

I agree! The students are so awesome! It is a serious 3-way win. They get to practice signing. I get to work with some truly outstanding individuals. The public gets to learn alongside the students.

My ASL teacher told me recently that kissing the hand to say you like something is taboo or something unless you're deaf or otherwise "truly understand the sign." Will you please explain this?
@sign-language
@sign-language 11 ай бұрын
Great question: consider applying to join the Lifeprint-ASLU Facebook group and asking your question there. I recommend phrasing it as: I recently learned the KISS-FIST sign. Can any of you who are familiar with that sign share any notes or insights on its uses, meanings, limitations, or social implications? The goal here is to get feedback rather than to influence their opinions as to any sort of taboo aspect of the sign. It is my opinion that your instructor was trying to warn you away from casually using the sign without realizing the exuberance the sign connotes. Deaf people and skilled signers who hang out in the Deaf community realize that the KISS-FIST sign comes with what might be considered to be a built in exclamation point. A beginning signer who over-uses the KISS-FIST sign (when some other less exuberant sign would work fine) comes across as a noob or overly excited rookie. See: facebook.com/groups/Lifeprint.ASLU/

Glad to see the stories to your lessons here (I couldn’t find the link to them in your website). I have so much trouble finding them in YT, though. Do you have a playlist for them?
@sign-language
@sign-language 8 ай бұрын
I am adding stories to some of the lessons as time permits. I believe I have existing videos of the Narratives (story) for these lessons: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 17, 18, 19, 20 Recently added: 7 and 8. Might be a few others. Eventually I hope to get a playlist built for them and/or just add them to the playlist for which ever level they are part of.

Dr. Vicars -- Question?? -- With the invention of front loading washers and washers that don't use the "agitator" part will the sign for laundry be changing?
@sign-language
@sign-language Ай бұрын
Such a great question! My response is: Maybe! It took a long time for "phone" to change -- and lots of people still do the older (Y-hand) sign for "phone." (But almost no one does the two handed "S" hands sign for phone any more (ha). My guess is that in my lifetime the current "agitator" sign for washer (mechanical washing) will stay in use -- partly because top-loaders are still quite common and in many houses at the moment.
