Hello ASL Heroes!!! Hey, I could really use your help. If you’ve enjoyed having access to an expert in ASL you can help me continue my work for you. A small monthly donation from you would instantly make a big difference here at the studio because teachers don’t earn much and I could use some help paying for server and domain hosting for Lifeprint.com. Right now you can help out a humble (not to mention kind, caring, generous, compassionate, helpful, friendly, fair, and hard-working) ASL teacher -- just go here and a few clicks later you too will be a true “ASL Hero!” www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_s-xclick&hosted_button_id=64QMBRBXQSV6G Thanks! - Dr. Bill p.s. Want to have your very own USB drive with four semesters worth of ASL videos (that’s the equivalent of two years of colleges classes) for just $79.95? See "SuperUSB" in the ASLUniversity bookstore at: lifeprint.com/bookstore/bookstore.htm Take care and love to you all. :)

I love how often beer becomes the butt of a joke. I kinda like to imagine there is just one guy -always the same guy- who just sits in the class and sips a beer during class.

Totally! Back there in the far corner. Just chillin' and enjoying the flow of class. A good sport and easy to get along with. Drinks his beer from an opaque bottle but he knows I know. S'all fine -- as long as he turns in his assignments and gets a "C-" or better on the final exam he will still fill the language requirement for graduation!

I like the sign for “busy”. The movement of it resembles when you sign the letter “Z”. and when you say the word “busy” it always sounds like there’s a Z instead of an S in it.

When I watch these videos, I write down a list of all the new words I'm learning and come back to it as a sort of practice sheet. I like doing this because there are more words and terms to be learned in the classroom banter than can be found in just the lists on LifePrint. I've got one for each lesson thus far. I try to watch one every shift I have at work (I'm a security guard which gives me far too much time on my hands). Sarah seemed to be struggling to remember certain words in this lesson when asking questions to her classmates and I think that's what I like most about these videos. I've had trouble remembering certain words lately and it's frustrating, but since these videos are shot with students during their actual learning process, it's encouraging to know that I'm not the only one finding it difficult to remember things straight away and it reassures me that this is normal. I've tried to learn online in the past but this has been the one time where I feel like what's being taught it actually sticking, and I know that a large part of that is due to this format. Absolute genius. I can't thank Dr. Bill enough for making these videos available.

When i sign or watch someone signing, there is a voice in my head that says the name of the sign (gloss) in English. I've been hoping to wish that voice away so i'm thinking just in terms of visual elements. This lesson, that voice seems to be getting a bit quieter. I've been trying to find literature on the subject, but anything mentioning subvocalization is actually talking about physically mouthing the gloss rather than an internal voice. Do you have any thoughts on whether it is good or bad to have that inner voice? Thank you!!
@sign-language
@sign-language 2 жыл бұрын
Try doing searches for "inner speech" (or various spelling of that without the hyphen or no space) and add various keywords that relate to your subject interest. Also search for "intrapersonal communication" + "sign" + "language" or similar combinations over at the "Google Scholar" site. Post back if you find anything juicy.

ASL gloss: TEN FIFTEEN MINUTE GOOD SET-UP SET-UP READY PERFECT-(version "just so"). Interpretation: "I like to go to class 10 or 15 minutes early so I can get the classroom all set up just the way I like it." The sign you are asking about is probably the "SET-UP" sign which can also be glossed as ESTABLISH and has a variety of meanings such as "the founding of a city" or can even mean "there is a building or structure at this location."

so for "manager" you can use the sign for "manage" and then that "person" sign you use in student?
@Fahrenheit4051
@Fahrenheit4051 7 жыл бұрын
Yeah, a lot of signs (probably hundreds) can have the "PERSON" affix added on to mean a person who does that thing. TEACH-PERSON = Teacher PERSON-WORK-WITH = Coworker WRITE-PERSON = Author DRAMA-PERSON = Actor

If you watch via a full-size browser (such as a desktop computer) you can click on the gear icon and adjust the speed of the video. Or use your space bar to pause and then your < > keys to advance frame by frame and be able to catch the spelling.
