Billy is a special man, one i love dearly and i hope, regardless of his age and condition, that he's going to be around for many more years to come.

Are all good Scottish comedians from Glasgow?
@motomartinski56723 жыл бұрын
Well of course Scotland, Hugh MacDiarmid's "our multiform Scotland" and a majority of it's "indigenous" people have a common, (arguably necessarily rather hard) backbone, but in some respects is pretty diverse. Edinburgh is kindofa hybrid of East Central Scotland and middle class English + "cosmopolitan" folks these days. To a certain extent that's been true for a couple of centuries. Glasgow and the surrounding 20 miles or so was, for a long time, a trading and industrial revolution powerhouse, of Scotland, Britain, The World (especially of steel and shipping, where Billy was first employed. James Watt lived on the Clyde estuary) And part of the cradle of trade-unionism and _democratic_ socialism. Glasgow and it's surrounds and West Central Scotland always had a hard edged, sometimes dark, but often warm humour, (an essential aid to morale and survival) influenced in various respects by the peoples of Ulster and the West Highlands, many of whom moved toward Glasgow from the outset of the industrial revolution or as a result of famine and hardship in Ireland. If your comment was not simply a rhetorical remark... I would recommend The Scottish Nation: 1700-2000 by T.M. Devine as wonderfully laid out background. (warning: some of this and other among his historical books, e.g. "The Scottish Clearances" are heart breaking, but do give insight to Scots "hardiness" and outsized wide influence in military history, the development of Global trade, Industrial revolution, Empire, Canada...American revolution etc )
