Don't be afraid to go back and review. Also feel free to slow things down. You don't have to do multiple lessons a day. You can do one a day, or 3 a week, or whatever you're comfortable with. You can also watch the video more than once - try one time in the morning and one time at night.
@KelahCash2 жыл бұрын
Hey yall!! I'm checking in on this lesson about 3-4 months after initially watching it. TRUST ME, like 선생님 teaches, these WILL begin to become more natural as you learn more of the language. Your tongue will begin to more naturally wrap around the sounds & produce these changes, ESPECIALLY when you make sure to continue feeding yourself Korean media to "wash yourself" in the language. Even though this is an obvious point, I'll say it in the rare case that someone may not realize it- as you learn a new language, you want to know how the language sounds through native/fluent speakers. It'll help! Keep learning & listening. Don't let their fluency intimidate you, but FAMILIARIZE you with the sound, flow, rhythm, intonation, inflection, etc of your newly developing language. You're a baby, so you need to be fed & exposed CONSTANTLY! Enjoy, don't stress & DO NOT COMPARE YOURSELF TO OTHERS' PROGRESS! You're on your own journey! Enjoy! Now I know this particular lesson is a HARD ONE lol. So many rules one right after the other & the information is overwhelming. But it WILL come to you. Write the rules, have em for reference, but keep learning! Then, in 3-4 months, you can look back like me to review & realize how much you've naturally retained, while re-learning some rules you may have forgotten! That way, you can continue to master the ones you know & begin taking notice of the ones you forgot to practice from here on out. Keep going over lessons! DON'T run through these videos! It'd tempting to keep accumulating information, but you don't want to have a bunch of knowledge you haven't mastered. That makes it useless information if you can't utilize it. Study each video, get a good grip on it, continue, go back & practice everything, move on, review some old videos, practice, move on again, & keep doing that. Learn, Review, Practice, Implement, Repeat. Lol. Love yall! 화이팅, 가족! ♥️♥️♥️

I first watched this video more than a year ago & remember I was completely overwhelmed, but I decided to revisit it now because I still get messed up by ㄹ sometimes when it bumps up against certain other sounds (usually consonants, but I also have a lot of trouble with ㄹ when it bumps up against ㅛ/ㅠ/ㅕ/ㅑ for some reason), so I decided to revisit this video because I remembered you gave such great, detailed information. I'm amazed how much of this has become completely second nature to me now, when it seemed so random when I first started learning! Anyone watching this who is new to learning Korean, listen to what Billy says at the start: It's good to know that these sound changes exist, but don't worry too much about fully understanding them or memorizing them! They'll come naturally to you as you have more experience with the language, but just knowing that this sort of stuff exists will help you to avoid panicking when some stuff doesn't sound the way you expect it to. Fighting!

After learning my first foreign language fluenty I learned a simple, yet extremely important lesson. When you are really serious about learning a language, and you come across something you can't understand or say, just relax, practice, and let your brain do the magic for you. I finished the 'learn Hangul in 90 minutes' video, and it was great, but I've been needing to re-watch the last 30 minutes of it repetitively for the following 2-3 days because I just couldn't keep all of the sound change rules in my head, so whenever I came across a sentence that I was excited to read (and thought I could read easily), Id have to take a minute and wait and go through every syllable making sure to check to see if I have to apply ANY sound change rules. and doing that really wears you down. I'm only 10 minutes into this video but I had to pause and write this comment down. In 10 minutes this video is already helping me more than, re-watching all the Sound Change Rule chapters 2-3 times over, thanks to the more detailed and comfortable explanations. THANKYOUUUU p.s also seeing you stand there physically is more captivating and makes it easier for me to listen and focus as to what you are saying, rather than looking at a blank screen with just some animated letters and audio. Thankyou again. - hope you see this comment some day : )

"ㅎ" can also be explained the same as how " ㅇ" is silent when is placed before a vowel..the next letter(vowel) that follows after "ㅎ" is pronounced rather than saying/or actually pronouncing "ㅎ" sound. At first, the idea of sound change rules felt overwhelming, but think about English words, we kinda do the same too! Think about it... when we say "cat", we naturally pronounce it as "ca" (no great emphasis on the 't'), rather than saying "ca-tuh". I guess that's what Billy is trying to get across- that there is less emphasis and stress towards the end of each syllable, hence why the more aspirated consonances turn into ㄷ. Helps it naturally flow!

But still I would take it slow until I can understand these 3 hahaha. The other 2 I can understand a bit but this one confused me alot. Anyway, thanks for this free course tho, I don't know why I'm learning korean but here I am.

I was worried before but now these are easy once you understand them properly like math problems it's fun doing it , once you understand what's the formula and how to use it and yea they start to happen so naturally, one advice, basically go ahead and revise them , saying it out loud make it make sense and try to understand why and how it's happening with the examples because they make it soooo easy to see it visually and get it .

THANK YOU for making these videos, - particularly this one! I was enunciating each syllable and this video is so helpful! I had to watch and re-watch but I am finally getting it!

I knew about the ㅅ at the end of syllables because my name written in Korean is 줄리엣 (Juliette) and I was so confused as to why the t sound was spelled with the ㅅ. All the other sound changes I didnt really know though!

Juliette Braden to avoid confusion instead of ‘t sound’ say ㄷ. Cuz I got confused a bit because it’s a cross between a t and d

@@sigmathletics I was thinking of it as a very soft t sound, but this makes more sense! Thank you!

but why cant we put the ㄷ at the end of your name instead of ㅅ ?
@juliettebraden33283 жыл бұрын
@@laul6500 unfortunately, I don't know enough about Korean or it's spelling rules to answer that, but I assume it has something to do with the history of the language or pronunciation rules or something. I'm not sure

Hi Billy, I'm reviewing this lesson and I've noticed something that I do not understand. For sound change rule #3 at 6:23 you listed 읗 as an example of when the 2nd syllable begins with any of the following 5 consonants (ㄱ,ㄷ,ㅂ,ㅅ,ㅈ) the 2nd syllable's consonant becomes pronounced as a double consonant. However, I remember learning from sound change rule #4 at 9:49 that the regular consonant that comes before or after ㅎ becomes pronounced as a strong consonant (ex. 좋다=조타 and 많다=만타). So I'm confused about 읗. Is that a special exception? And do you have an example of a word/term with 읗 where the 2nd consonant will be pronounced as a double consonant? Thank you :)

Nice catch! I should've double checked those examples. Since it's been a while I'll probably leave this video as is, but if someone ever finds another typo in it I'll re-upload it to fix that.

So it's Rule 4 that applies?

As a korean, I’ve never seen the letter 읗 in korean except the word ‘히읗‘. So don’t worry about that cause you can hardly encounter that problem😂 So when you speak ‘히읗‘ with postpositions like “히읗도“ ”히읗과“, you should pronounce like “히읃또“ ”히읃꽈“. However when you pronounce “낳다“ or “좋다”, you should pronouce like “나타“ ”조타“. 읗 is a special exception

Thank you so much for explaining this. I was really confused because the books I have gotten did not explain how or why any of this happened and I was really confused on why they were pronounced differently.

Hi there! I wanted to get back into learning Korean alongisde my Japanese studies because I love both languages and didn't want to put Korean off any longer... coming from a phonetic langauge to all these rules is incredibly overwhelming and I am doubting myself hard right now! I know they will come naturally with time if I pace myself and stick to it, I just wanted to vent lol :-( Loving Korean Made Simple so far and I'm determined to finish it all at my own pace, whatever that may look like day to day. Thank you so much :D

Thank you so much for explaining these rules! I couldn't understand why my favorite kpop group was very clearly singing "불-놀-이-야", but when they were talking about the song title I was hearing a mysterious "불로리야". Well now I know (and that's one rule I'll remember forever now haha).

Its because when ㄹ & ㄴ meets, it becomes ㄹ (실내->실래, 윤리->율리 etc) and since 이 "ㅇ" has no sound the ㄹ from 불 replaces the ㅇ

I disaggre, it is possible to pronounce the consonents at the end of the words. In Hungarian we use many consonents. :) We can pronounce the consonents without vowels. Hungarian an agglutinating language as well, we put various endings to the verbs and nouns when we speak.
@GoBillyKorean3 жыл бұрын
Sure it's possible, but it's a lot slower and harder than blending sounds together. It's also possible to read "Nice to meet you" individually, but most people when speaking will say it as "Nice t'mee'chu" or a variation of that. This is just an example in English, but in Korean the idea is similar. But if you ever ask someone to re-pronounce a word, they can of course read a word syllable by syllable to help someone understand the word they're saying.
