In old school rock lingo, very often "Little Sister" could also stand as a nick name for a lover, but on this one this was in fact apparently about his actual sister, and he's questioning her about this guy she's with, as she was being forced to marry him as the apparently the guy and her had eloped and she turned out pregnant. To which a "shotgun" wedding was planned. The old time joke being that you better marry her boy, or the girl's father is going to coming after you, to the point that they jokingly would have the shotgun ready at the wedding in case the boy would still try to run out on the wedding. I believe the move of 7 brides for 7 brothers ended on the same joke, with 7 fathers with shot guns. And 7 country boys very quickly saying "I do."

As stated in an interview on VH1's "Storytellers", Billy specifically states that the song is NOT about his little sister like everyone believes. "Little Sister" in England, is slang for girlfriend, similar to "Bae". He continued to say the song is about a guy seeing a girl he was once in a relationship with marry someone else. He's still deeply in love with her, but she's not. Additionally she's pregnant by the guy she's about to marry. He later went on to say his sister getting married gave him the inspiration to the song, but reiterated that it is not specifically about her. Only that his little sister gave him inspiration.

Billy Idol is a very intelligent guy . Just looking back at his old interviews you can see. Though born in England he spent a few years in New York State when he was a little kid before returning home to England . He had a career in the mid 70s with punk band Generation X but he never really made it big until he moved to the states and went solo. I loved listening to him when I was about 8 or 9 , my old man played the albums religiously. He looks a bit weird now with the plastic surgery on his lips. Bit duck face but my sister was crazy for him in the 80s

Part about his sister, and part about what was going on in his life. After the break-up of his band Generation X he came to NY from London, his manager took him to a room with table, pencil and paper and said ok write a song, White Wedding is what he wrote. I love listening to his viewpoints & thoughts in interviews and talk shows like David Letterman and Arsenio Hall, that's how you find out what a person is really like! I seriously watch them all! He really has a magnificent mind, and I love his 2 min section interview on violence called : (Billy Idol - Night Flight - Violence) on KZbin. I love all his Live Concert video's Super overdrive, Live Wembley, Live in Rio, Storytellers is where he explains where he got the idea of songs n titles at. I'm half way through his book he wrote "Dancing with Myself" a brutally honest wild ride he has had. :) I've always loved Billy's Songs on MTV and occasionally would watch his video's on KZbin. Then in March 2021 my brother who fought cancer for 6 mo. .. 2 days before his passing, I was froze in thought at my washing machine, my son Kevin walked up on me.. You ok Mom? It's Ed, he is close. I'm was so so sad and didn't know how I'm going to shake it this time. Then as I was standing washing dishes, I suddenly started singing out of the blue, the song "Cradle of Love'' then after that Flesh for Fantasy, others came to mind. And I felt way better after singing, I then I knew everything was going to be ok. God, my mom, me... put an earworm in my head, Idolize Yourself Karen that's how your going to get thru this, and I have been listening to him every day since. xoxo @

Hey Jayy! Happy Easter! I hope all is well with you. The give away in the lyrics that all may not be what it seems in this song is the line "Hey little sister, shotgun". In other words, he's singing about a shotgun wedding "arranged in order to avoid embarrassment due to premarital sex which can possibly lead to an unintended pregnancy." Back in the day, when this song was new and I was too, my buddies and I used to speculate that he was singing about a white powder wedding, that is, a cocaine wedding hosted by some Wall Street master of the universe or Florida drug lord, a la the Al Pacino movie "Scarface".

My personal interpretation of the song and video is that it is a critique of the "marriage" structure and there is a lot of symbolism equating marriage to death. The woman's (subservient) role as the "wife" dancing in the kitchen with all the appliances blowing up and his lyrics about how there is nothing safe, or secure in this world are consistent with the increasing divorce rate beginning in the '70s when women began to enter the work-place in bigger numbers, were allowed to own their own credit cards, and were legally allowed to divorce. Prior to that, only the man could do those things giving him power and control over the woman. The dream of "marriage" is just that, a "dream", but reality is much more grim.
