Bongothom I was nearing my teens and I loved the song “One Tin Soldier.” So I asked my parents if we could go (it was PG so my folks wouldn’t let me go alone. Otherwise I would have). My mother said No and the reason she gave was “it’s violent, you’re too young.” But I think the reason she didn’t want to take me was because she (as well as my dad) was kind of racist and it would have made her uncomfortable.

Great scene and i too was impacted by it as a youth. As an adult, all the hippy dippy stuff wears thin, I mean, "God's little gift the sunshine." Please. "Peace or I will kick your ass." I much prefer The Born Losers, the first Billy Jack movie, and the film that paid for Billy Jack. Born Losers is a gritty, violent biker film with zero pretensions and a mean streak. In fact, it's the best film in the genre, IMO. I'm a huge fan of TBL, while Billy Jack is pretty much unwatchable to me. But, hey, to each his own, power to the people, MAN!

In 1971 I was 17 and madly in love. That summer I saw Billy Jack 13 times, in the theaters, no VHS or DVDS then. I practically memorized that movie. I could recite most of it. And did to anyone who would listen. The scene in the ice cream parlor was my favorite. "When I think of the number of years she will have to carry in her memory the savagery of this idiotic moment of yours....." I am 69 now and I can't watch this movie anymore. The awful dialog, the amateurish acting. But, it's still a cherished memory of the best summer of my life. I still love "One Tin Soldier" The song still holds up for me even if the movie doesn't. And it's fun to see Howard Hesseman (sp?) In one of his earliest roles. Tom Laughlin was a complex and fascinating man. He brought Montessori schools to the USA. He tried to get into politics, but never got too far. I believe he was too naive and idealistic to succeed in the dirty business of politics. He had to fight the system to make the movie he wanted to make. To a large degree, he was, in real life BILLY JACK. His passing saddens me a little. But, he had a long and fulfilling life. RIP.

In 2001, I went to L. A. and met Tom Laughlin and his lovely wife Delores Taylor. I had stumbled upon the Billy Jack chat room when I was looking for the proper place for two eagle feathers, I had been given by the nephew of a former mayor of Houston Texas. I made friends in the chat room and some time later, a gathering had been arranged. We all met and spent three days together. Tom and Delores met with us. He told us how he had written, directed and starred in the movie. He went on to say the studio did little to promote the movie. He fought to get the rights to his movie for years. He would indeed get the rights and go on to be the FIRST person to independently release, promote and have great success with his first movie. When he spoke of the frustration of that, he was at a loss for words. I chimed in “Did you go beserk?” He and everyone there got a good laugh. I’ll never forget that time spent with them and the group from the Billy Jack Chatroom and Pondlady. What a blessing!💐❤️🙏

People have perverted the meaning behind the lesson of turn the other cheek. You have to remember Jesus was a Jew speaking to Jews who had been conquered by Romans. There was a legal system in place that would let Romans hit you with no repurcussions, while it was illegal for you to physically retaliate. It was essentially illegal for you to physically stand up to your bully if your bully was Roman and you were not. Jesus didn’t want us to bow to evil, he hated evil and we should too. Turn the other cheek means you fight evil in a way that works. For instance if your a 90lb twig and your getting bullied by someone 3 times the size of you... violence is only going to get you hurt or killed. And the bully will reaffirm his status with your defeat. People will see you get beat and think “I don’t want that to be me I better give in next time he looks my way” The 90lb twig has to come up with a different way of standing up for himself. That’s the lesson behind turning the other cheek.

@@richardsalmon5918 Tom Laughlin was a long-time student of the martial art hapkido, and he performed many of his own fighting moves in the movie. But in one particular scene he was forced to use a stunt double-his teacher, Master Bong Soo Han. The scene in question was where Billy Jack smacked Sheriff Posner upside the head with his foot; Laughlin was able to perform the kick in question, but not with the precision necessary to stop his foot just millimeters away from actor Bert Freed’s face.

This happened across the Yavipai county courthouse in Prescott arizona on the East side. An old ice cream store that is still there, but has changed hands recently.

Just an awesome movie. Like the old days when they made real movies, with a story line, a moral, and a lesson.... today, you get crap.

Seen this in a theater so many moons ago, wanted to kick everyone's ass walking on the way back to my home. Dude was seriously one of my idols growing up. The scene that follows was even better ;)
